As usual, the lack of nuance is infuriating. He shouldn't have put that stupid snapchat up with his ex girlfriend, He shouldn't have brought the girl back to his hotel in Iceland, he shouldn't have inhaled nitrous oxide. However the media backlash, and total over exaggeration of this stuff is absolutely shameful. Half these journos get off on this shit, I've seen people compare him to Ravel Morrison for Christs sake. He's a teenage millionaire, and the hottest prospect in his country, he will make mistakes.

Hopefully he's learned his lesson after a well deserved bollocking from Ole and Mike. I wonder how well he gets on with Rashford, who although only a few years younger could prove to be an excellent role model to him.

That's the first time I've ever heard it referred to as hippy crack in my life. Ridiculous.

Or Martial even better, never really hear a peep from him off the pitch. They may also be because he is French and the media are less interested but still.

Point is, he has other young players around him to learn from.

He's a bit of a knob isn't he
 kids inhale this stuff all over the world. Go to any party island and they sell it everywhere.

It’s not going to effect him long term it just looks bad when things leak out like this. He’s clearly still a kid and perhaps not mature yet - I’m sure these recent instances will wise him up.

He's not just any kid he needs to realise the position he's in and the responsibility of it and fast.

I hope this is the end of his antics.

Couple of idiots, also wondering if they were copying some older squad members. I am wondering if Mason would have went through with it if Rashford was around to guide him as I noticed he is the only United player in the England squad.
Walker is a specialist

Well if he doesn’t then he’s going to be having a lot of negative media which won’t help him? Fairly simple isn’t it.

I doubt he got much media/public attention before but now he’s an England player the press will be after him - and they are. I’m sure once the football starts again united will get hold of him and keep him in check. he’s only an 18 year old people forget they want to have a life outside football too.

All I'm really taking from this is that he isn't the quiet sensible lad we perhaps thought. No great offences committed it's just a case that he isn't very mature and hasn't come to understand his profile.

I'd prefer if all our players especially the young ones lived with absolute football focus and put the party lifestyle aside but it's not realistic. I'd send Sir Alex to have a quiet word with him.

He looks like a child in that years old video but of course it comes out now to pile it on

There's a good reason why the club have done their best to keep him away from the press and it's because of their incessant bloodlust for publicly destroying peoples characters.

Hope he manages to be a lot more lowkey and careful about who he allows around him and what he does because he's gonna be under a microscope moving forward with the gutter press looking to dig up any and all past transgressions

I’m sure he does when he needs to keep apologising. The club and his sponsors also won’t be happy.
I’m hoping you’re right, big season for mason coming up, he’s give himself added pressure now too as we’ve seen with the press already, he needs to light it up

Needs to learn quickly being talented is only half the battle. Not many players make it to the very top living a shitty lifestyle.

Ole won’t put up with this nonsense for long. It’s not like Mason is a child anymore, he needs to sort his head out.

"Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax. Nitrous oxide, sometimes called “laughing gas,” is one option your dentist may offer to help make you more comfortable during certain procedures."

Mason Greenwood inhales nitrus oxide: HIPPY CRACK.

It's nice when the media doesn't have a sensationalistic driven agenda. Just kidding, journos in the Island are a bunch of troglodytes a huge number of them.

Stupid thing to do. But the reality is, in any city centre you will see the little silver bullets all on the road. At my old flat, we saw 6 crates of the stuff in the bins.

Greenwood isn't an average 18 year old though, so hopefully he learns his lessons from the last few weeks. He has a huge spotlight on him and the club need to help manage that properly.

He wasn't using it as a safe and effective sedative agent, come on, he was getting high. They obviously chose the term hippy crack because that's the worst name it has, but it's not like they made it up.

The point is how benign this is. Adding the phrasing "happy crack" does nothing for the article outside of attempting to put an emphasis on how "illegal and scandalous" it is.

Its getting more and more difficult to defend, both him and the club, you would have thought with every teenager who breaks into the first team a 'minder ' of some kind would be brought in immediately.
You wonder sometimes whether any real lessons were ever learned after George Best.

The lad now definitely has a press target pinned to his back, everything he has ever done or said that was slightly dubious since he was into his teens will now get hunted down and dug up by the press and there will always be those there claiming 'to witness' these events and who are seeking their 15 minutes of fame.

Lets hope he gets through this and those who both love him those who are responsible for him will get their act together and soon!

God, could you imagine if Pogba was stupid like Greenwood.
It would be a bloodbath. Playing for one of the biggest clubs in world football you're always going to be a target for even the smallest of things. Because of this he isn't allowed the usual leg room an 18 year old would get.

Same shit was written about Sterling 5 years ago. Idiot using hippy crack etc.. and he sorted himself out just fine. Man these guys are teenagers with a lifestyle and money most can only dream about, its easy to say they should do better but temptation must be huge. The lad will grow up, give him time.

I'm sure no-one here ever gave into peer pressure while they were teenagers.

I reckon if a video of him came out being drunk below the drinking age, there would be national outrage with the hypocrites forgetting the time they were passed out drunk in their mate's driveway at 16.

I’ve tried it years ago at a local bar. It’s absolutely nothing. Makes you laugh a bit for a few minutes. Then I went home and violently threw up in the bathroom from all the alcohol I’d drank.

Work in London; I’ve admitted at least 5 young lads presenting with something similar to subacute combined degeneration of the cord over the past year, because they did too much NOS.

Tend to make a full recovery, but one of them was still ataxic on discharge.

He's spot on for a change, the UK press love nothing more than character assassination

You'd never see the likes of Dembele and Mbappe have stuff like this, which they've had posted on snapchat before, be put on blast in the media and used as a stick to beat them down with in France like in England.

I'm not even that arsed about either of the incidents but just think he's so niave to have been filmed on both occasions - needs to realise who he is now and grow up fast

A simple rebuttal to this endless "but all 18 year olds do dumb things!" is that none of our other players have been caught doing multiple idiotic things in a matter of weeks and not ALL footballers sneak in girls during a pandemic on their first England call up, not ALL footballers take drugs, not ALL footballers put out videos with underage girls talking about wanting daddy's dick, not ALL footballers get noise complaints over house parties during quarantine...

This endless excuse making is just the height of hypocrisy. The only reason people do it is because they are psychologically unable to consider that one of our best prospects doesn't have the right mentality. Many feel if they accept this, inwardly or outwardly, he is bound to be branded a Ravel or something.

Fact of the matter is that Mason shouldn't have been doing any of these things, let alone filmed doing it, and it is a worrying sign. If he doesn't get his shit together, his career will suffer.

I'm honestly a little bit surprise that the media hasn't learned a thing from the Caroline Flack suicie that was directly contributed to the relentless media character assasination (I'm not a medical doctor so I won't pretend to know what else she was struggling with).

In Norway we have a strict set of ethics rules for the press that protects against sensationalistic publication and witchunting that all publications, radio and TV have to adhere by.

Here's a link to that that will translate to English with google for anyone curious: https://presse.no/pfu/etiske-regler/vaer-varsom-plakaten/

For example one section:

4.7. Be careful with the use of name and picture and other clear identifying marks on persons mentioned in connection with reprehensible or criminal offenses. Take special care when discussing cases at an early stage of investigation, in cases involving young offenders, and where identifying coverage can lead to an unreasonable burden on third parties. Identification must be based on a justified need for information. It may, for example, be justified to identify by imminent danger of abuse against defenseless persons, by serious and repeated criminal acts, when the identity or role of the person in question has clear relevance to the circumstances mentioned, or where identification prevents innocents from being exposed to unjustified suspicion.

4.14. Those who are exposed to strong accusations shall, as far as possible, have access to adress the factual accusations. Debate, criticism and news dissemination must not be hindered by the parties' unwillingness to express themselves or participate in the debate.

We generally don't name and shame in the Norwegian media unless it has a specific reason that contributes to public safety. But if someone does something stupid the media will cover with, for example: "Norwegian football star accused of embezzling funds" which happened last year. The man was not idenitified before he himself came out in public to admit his wrongdoing.

The whole naming and shaming and repeating articles in the UK, and honestly worldwide press for coverage and incidents that generally do not concern the broad public, is abhorrent and nothing more than voyeuristic fetishism that offers nothing but satisfy the publics need to KNOW what other people are doing.

Essentially, Mason Greenwood huffing laughing gas is not my business, not your business, and certainly not the publics business. Because it makes it's round on social media it certainly does not make it the medias business to go on a free for all and help spread the news nation wide.

Unfortunately the right to privacy only seem to extend as far as when it doesn't involve oneself.

This summer media coverage on Greenwood reminds me of the time Sterling was about to leave Liverpool for Man City. They brought up all dirt they could on Sterling, including the time he inhaled the Nitrous Oxide gas.

But yeah, Greenwood needs someone senior in the Man Utd squad to talk to. Things can go awry real fast before he knows it.
If only more football players have the sheer utter dedication of Ronaldo.

So overdramatic.

Being a public figure means being in the public eye.

When Rooney was caught up in the prostitution scandal - was he at fault for cheating or the media at fault for reporting on it?

In Sterling's case it was a bit different since there was actual fabrication being published, but what aside from publishing Greenwood's OWN SOCIAL MEDIA posts has the papers done?
