Hard times: adjusting to the new reality

Window has been a disaster - looking at our midfield rebuild of Santos, Tielemans and Baleba compare to City getting Anderson, Enzo and Bouaddi is sobering.

I really like Tielemans and Baleba but given we’ve saved money getting them, it’s inexcusable to be going into the season without then spending on squad depth like a backup striker and left back.

Less net spend than Coventry and Ipswich. Around the same as Hull and Brentford.

We’ve consistently been getting huge wages off the books in the last 2/3 years - Case and Sancho gone this summer, replaced with lower wage players etc and the financial picture still isn’t there. We sold Hojlund this summer, kickback for Greenwood etc

I simply don’t believe it’s a matter of not having the money available - there’s a pattern of penny pinching at the club when we could really kick on.

The landscape has changed in terms of transfers, we are a financial giant and we have missed a golden opportunity to have an outside chance of a challenge amidst all the chaos
Some sense sprinkled in amongst the nonsense.

I agree we likely have the financial muscle, but are unwilling to use it for the players available. I don’t see that as penny pinching, I see that as being level headed and sensible for the first time in over a decade. Which I actually applaud.

And comparing our midfield rebuild to that of a club owned by an oil rich nation state and guilty of over a hundred financial rule breaches, isn’t exactly a sensible barometer.

Anderson 116m and 350k a week. You want to compete for that? For reference, I believe Mainoo is every bit as good and potentially better.

Enzo. 125m and probably 300-400k in wages. Sound like a good deal to you? Is he that much better than Tielemans at 35m and 185k a week? Better age, sure, but statistically Tielemans was better in most relevant data sets last season.

Bouaddi. 100m and 200k a week. How is this any better a signing than Baleba, who cost 30ish million less. He has less experience, and has never played at a level above Ligue 1, while Baleba already has two full PL campaigns under his belt, one of which was close to sensational. Bouaddi is all potential, but that has to be realised. I doubt many of us have actually watched him play much at all. What we do have from Ligue 1 is limited, and it’s Ligue 1, and during the World Cup all he did was slowly pass it backwards and sideways and move around somewhat competently. He might end up being a cracking player, but there’s a long way between there and where we are.

Santos meanwhile is a 22 year old Brazil international, who was very good when he played last season in the PL, a player fans and coaches of his club didn’t want to sell, is very highly rated within the game, has an excellent data sets from the PL last year, and already performed in Ligue 1 for a season way above the levels Bouaddi achieved. And somehow he’s a shit signing at half the price?

Just because a deal isn’t marquee, or didn’t cost a lot, it doesn’t mean it’s a bad or bargain basement signing. We’ve literally lauded other clubs for their smart transfer approaches for years. “Why did we sign Antony for 80m, City got Cherki for 30! Why can’t we do these sorts of deals?” - Then we do do those sorts of deals, and the criticism pivots to “shopping at Poundland”, “Broke, skint, a joke of a club”, “penny pinching”, “scraping the barrel for rejects”.

Fans lie to themselves about what they want. They say they want smart, data driven signings for sensible fees. To find gaps and opportunities in the market like other clubs. To be smarter. But deep down that’s all just copium for when a big signing doesn’t work out, or another club signs a high profile expensive player. What most fans want, and what they won’t admit, is for United to enter - and win - the dick swinging contest that is the transfer window. To say “we spent the most, we signed the flashiest players, we won the transfer window! Look how big and important we are.” And that is its own form of copium for years of getting outperformed by smarter clubs with sustainable, data driven recruitment.

The club makes some mistakes. They all do. But we are getting much more right now than we are getting wrong. Until recently we were getting nearly all of it wrong.

I am glad the club doesn’t seem to give a shit about (a) briefing the press and participating in the transfer circus, or (b) pandering to mouth frothing demands of fickle fans. Instead we are getting on with executing a sustainable long term strategy. I actually find it amusing how outraged and conspiratorial some of you get about it.

Transfer window was excellent on the whole. The lack of a left back is bad however. That said, never is a new way of operating tested more intensely than when under pressure. And while in the short term it is far from ideal withg he left back issue, I am genuinely glad we didn’t panic buy.

I expect the defence to be addressed next summer.

What exactly are you arguing here?

Yes, United spent enormous sums badly for 13 years. That is the fecking point. It doesn't rebut anything I said.

Glazers bought the club with debt, extracted value from it, presided over catastrophic football management, and burned through enormous amounts of club-generated revenue.

INEOS then voluntarily bought into that ownership structure. They weren’t conscripted. If they don’t have the appetite or capital to fund the rebuild properly, that’s on them too.

So what are you actually arguing for? That because the Glazers pissed the money away, everyone should now shrug and accept years of austerity while INEOS plead poverty?

And lose the “little spare mongerer” shit. If you want to run cover for two sets of billionaire owners, crack on...
Im arguing that your narrative that ‘this is the new normal and we can’t spend money’ isn’t something we’ve been fed for 15 years.

“We’ve spent 15 years being told the mess is inherited, the rebuild takes time, and expectations need adjusting.”

This was objectively a false sentence. You have one ownership who creates a mess. And a new one inherits is. This is the first time the mess has been inherited. We spent a good few of those years having Woodward saying we can do things in the market other clubs can only dream of he was telling us quite literally the opposite to what you say we’ve been told for 15 years. So yes that rebuts what you said.

And even though I disagree with how INEOS have gone about this window this is quite literally the first two years in the last 15 where ‘the mess is inherited’ actually rings somewhat true.

I’m not really arguing for anything, just you making up a narrative. Spare me. Go monger some spares elsewhere.

Poor window. Definitely not a big enough squad for what’s to come. Poor from the owners.
Need to just accept it and hopefully Carrick has some balls to really give some of the academy players a chance if the seniors don't step up in certain positions

None of this should be new news to anyone here. The Glazers saddled the organization with debt in order to buy it, which should never have been legal in the first place, poor decisions were made season after season starting with Moyes all the way through the hiring of Amorim, whose philosophy is alien to everything United stand for, including player problems such as Greenwood and Rashford, while City professionalized its operation and even Liverpool pulled its act together, and then Arsenal methodically moved up the food chain. There is nothing about this day, the inability to deal with a known problem -- the left fullback -- that should surprise anyone.

Shocked, yes, but not surprised.

Words are cheap but at the end of the day the real problem is lack of ambition. Managment don't really want to win things they're happy with being a top 4-6 team.

i don’t think we’ll necessarily continue to fall. we just have to be so much smarter than we have been. if young, promising players see us giving game time to young promising players, they are likely to be open to signing for the academy or as an u18/u21 over the likes of city, liverpool and arsenal. we are never going to outspend oil and state clubs. barcelona and real madrid don’t bother trying to. they’re selling a dream and prestige. we need to get to a place where we can look to do that again. i wouldn’t have wanted my kid at united over the past 2 decades. i also wouldn’t have advised anyone to join us either. that has to change.
fecking hell, a serious rimaldo post??

This was the window to try and make moves on catching up to everyone. And I think based on how the window has just ended for other teams we will rue it.

BUT also if we can compare ourselves to other teams for a second it’s not like we have the most inept owners out there. Each club has pretty much fecked the end of the window.

Arsenal after the entire window looking for a left winger are now down net one after losing Martinelli and Trossard and only brining in Tzolis. They didn’t ‘just pay the money’ for Fofana (which we are begging United to do with every transfer).

Chelsea just got blue balled by Monaco and Camara and have been left incredibly light in midfield after sanctioning a last minute deal for Enzo.

Liverpool are still really light on the right wing and have an empty midfield with no real defensive minded players in there.

Spurs started the window well and have ended it overpaying for Savio and buying Tosin and loaning in Mudryk.

It’s only City who have gone and filled their pockets.

In Europe:

Barcelona wanted a striker all summer and have ended up with Gabriel Jesus who has played what 9 games in the last two years.

Real Madrid said Rodri was theirs all summer and then hubris made them miss out and their fans are pissed that they again haven’t bought in another solid midfielder.

Have you then just ignored the ensuing 13 years where we consistently spent a shit tonne on a lot of terrible players. We were financially in a great position for a long time, just absolutely terribly run.

Until like two season ago we were pretty much on part with City in terms of spending.

So spare me your ‘spare me’ you little spare mongerer.

If you take the last 5 seasons.

Utd are the 4th highest spenders, only City, Chelsea and Spurs are higher. City have spent just over 200m more. Utd are 15th in terms of income from selling players, Chelsea and City are first and second. That PSR player merry go round is keeping the cheque books open.

Interestingly enough, I was watching a podcast with Rooney today, and he said that the club still haven’t recovered from selling Ronaldo in 2009.
I still go back to that as a defining moment for the club. Anyone could see the football was getting worse from then on but Sir Alex and the veterans (Rio, Vidic Évra, Giggs, Scholes,Rooney) just kept on going and winning us things despite the decline, and obviously RVP helped. Moyes came in with the 27 million Fellaini as his only purchase and that’s when it all finally fell apart. Years of neglect and buying either good but not great players came back to bite us.

The money we spent so wastefully trying to rebuild should have been invested earlier and not only on better players but more steadily.

This window has been a shambles. Fixture congestion and injuries will destroy our season. We'll be 6 or 7th.

I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark and assume that we've received assurances regarding Hall either for January's window or next summer, and that's why we haven't made a move.

I disagree with most of this but I have to address the last sentence. We already addressed the defence with Yoro, de Ligt, Dorgu and Mazraoui. Just like we apparently fixed the attack last season. Yet both still need addressing.

The only position that looks settled is the goalkeeper.

Nothing will improve until the leeches are gone
Glazers need to be driven away
And maybe even Ineos but this two owner thing is not doing great cause why should Ineos put money in when Glazers only take out and own majority. They played a great trick cause nobody is talking about them anymore but they should be the first to be thrown out. They've bankrupt the club almost, driven it into debt and ruined it from the inside it seems. No ambition but benjamins in their pockets.

Dorgu is not a defensive addition. Mazraoui is a utility option at an extremely low price/risk.
Partially addressed with Yoro and De Ligt, but the full overhaul will likely come next summer where I anticipate us replacing in some capacity Shaw. Dalot, Martinez and Maguire. Maybe retaining one or two from that list as squad options.

The midfield and attack have been brought to a point where each may need a one in/one out type approach for the next few windows. Addressed doesn’t mean perfect. Every squad needs refining year on year. Tinkering and upgrading as some players don’t meet their potential, and others exceed it. But neither will need the extensive overhaul they just received in the same way. And if we plan properly, with year on year incremental improvement, not need overhauling in one season again for the foreseeable future.

Surely Jimbo would look at the transfer window and bin whoever did our transfer dealings.

Unable to move players on, even when we did, it was for pittance. Incoming players still need be judged, but all three are from Premier League and we've seen what they can do. On paper not very exciting, but could work if Carrick can get a tune out of his midfield options.

I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark and assume that we've received assurances regarding Hall either for January's window or next summer, and that's why we haven't made a move.
There is just no way this is credible.

Newcastle have no reason to be promising us cut-price deals a year in advance. Their best interest is to do so well and get Hall to sign a new contract or convince him to stay, and plan B would be to ensure as many big clubs are interested as possible to create a bidding war and push the price up. There is no reason they wouldn't ask for a huge fee next summer, and we hate paying over the odds. If we finish outside the CL places this season, Hall could easily lose interest in us. If Madrid/Bayern/Barca/PSG/City/Chelsea/Liverpool/Arsenal come in and decide to offer Newcastle more money and/or offer Hall higher wages, our masterplan falls apart. If Hall gets a serious injury our plan falls apart.

We also need two left backs next summer because Shaw's contract is up. So not signing one this summer makes even less sense since we know we need two over the next 12 months anyway.

Throwing tons of money at players guarantees nothing - look at the dippers last season, for example.
We needed at least five signings to pad out the squad to help us with the inevitable fixture congestion this season, we haven't done that. This squad isn't big enough for a CL campaign.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Shaw ends up with a new contract on reduced wages.

That still doesn't mean much though. We will still have to pay a huge fee to Newcastle and we don't seem to be willing to pay over the odds. We still have to hope Hall doesn't get better offer on wages from Madrid/Bayern/Barca/PSG/City/Chelsea/Liverpool/Arsenal that changes his plans. We still have to hope he doesn't get injured. We still have to hope we don't miss out on CL football.

It becomes really simple when you accept that as long as the Glazers are here, we are side whose first mandatory goal is CL qualification to generate money for dividends, and second option goal is to challenge for silverware. The club doesn't move half as decisively to build on CL qualification as it does to obtain it. Which means that this is the best we get.

Don't expect us to win the league or the CL or challenge for either and you can have more peace of mind.

HELL NO - - - INEOS does not get to VOLUNTARILY buy into the club, take control of football operations, and then act like the mess was some natural disaster that happened to them. Oopsie.

They knew exactly what they were buying: the debt, the contracts, the squad, the cash constraints, all of it. It’s called due diligence.

“We inherited a mess” might eplain the starting point. It does not excuse underfunding the rebuild after voluntarily buying into the club.

And the Glazers are still there. If anything, INEOS have spent two years providing them cover (new structure, new faces, endless “rebuild” PR) while the squad stays underfunded, the stadium is in shambles and the fans get told to be patient again.

If you want to run PR cover for two sets of billionaire owners, crack on. Just let those last two functioning brain cells have a quick conference before presenting this as some devastating objective correction you fecking muppet

The problem I always had with this theory is that the owners care a lot about CL qualification and nothing else, I hear that and think "I actually wish that was true".

Because I'm not even convinced their actions suggest they care that much about being in the CL. If they were, we wouldn't routinely deliver shite transfer windows that result in us dropping out of the CL spots. If they really cared about securing CL football, they wouldn't have us go into this season with a washed and injury prone Luke Shaw as our only left back.

At some point over the last 13 years, have they not figured out that you can't just rest on your laurels and assume we have the CL spots locked up just because we achieved CL spots in the previous season. You think someone upstairs might have the brains to realise you still have to spend if you want to turn CL qualfication into a formality that we get every season.

Using the word austerity to describe a football club not spending enough hundreds of millions for your liking is vile.

Stay in your lane. Your brief is convincing everyone that going into the season without a left-back is fine because Hall is definitely arriving next summer. One impossible mission at a time.

It's an almost perfect post but you skipped one part ie Ineos track record in football. There were no Glazers at OGC Nice or Lausanne yet they still managed to feck it up on their own. Ineos aren't serious owners

Last season people were saying Isak, Wirtz and Ekitike were miles better than Cunha, Sesko and Mbeumo and a clear sign we can't compete with them.
Ultimately over the long run these things will matter. When City and Chelsea came to being in the 2000s they started spending absurd amounts and it didn’t matter straight away but eventually that spend resulted in them having better players overall and we can see the success they have enjoyed. Liverpool have joined that model of paying for the best and it will eventually reap rewards.

This whole linear building up the squad to win a title is bollocks. The league is quite weak right now, with a lot of teams in transition. This was the season to try for the title.

Instead after this window, the board has firmly aligned that expectations are now to secure a CL place, and nothing else.

We won’t face hard times, but we will firmly be mediocre. Top 4-6 will be the aim.

Climate change above us
Wars and AI all around us
Shit transfers below us

New reality is shit.

Like OP said, and I think alot of us knows the problems we have. Yes, after a decade of bad spending and ineptitude of management, we have what we see. But, relative speaking, we still can spend if we want and see opportunities necessary to do it like we did with Sesko. However, this year, the money being spend by PL clubs or especially the top clubs OP said, are on another level altogether. I think there is a willing from them to do each other a favor to make the account looks good. I think PL is living on its own bubble as more and more money from super billionaires, investment funds entities, states funds...etc looking for new and developing projects/assets to invest in.

We simply can't compete with those clubs with those backing as our owners are they are who they are. Unless, we have the same backing, we have to accept that we have to be more pruden, calculated, and much more risk averse than before as thr room of making error is thin compare to those club. It is going to take time to build a squad to be able to compete because unlike City that can spend half billions in 1 or 2 windows, we have a budget to adhere to. We have to adhere if we want to be more healthy as an organization down thr road.

I dont want to read too much of this thread.

We’ve been taken for mugs too much, and still are with outgoing fees. But some of this window will correct what players and selling clubs expect.

The other point is, its not as bad as it looks.
Lets not throw our toys out the pram because we have to wait until xmas to get that other shining toy.

I've accepted this reality some time ago. With Glazer debt and their(+ seemingly Ineos/Ratcliffe) incompetence, United is going to stagnate and fall behind more and more. Days of competing for PL/UCL are long gone, top 4/5 seems to be the current goal/ceiling. I kinda understand the "relatively low" spending, United just doesn't generate that much money anymore, compared to competition. Only 8th place on Deloitte list. We're the new underdogs.

There is only one possible solution to this problem, and it's pretty obvious. Complete sale of the club to someone/some entity willing to wipe Glazers debt, invest and seriously compete. Don't know if someone like that even exists/would be interested.
Is it incompetence if Ineos are managing a strict budget enforced on them from multiple previous ridiculous transfer fees and wages?

If there was money available to spend, of course we’d be signing left backs and stickers.

People blaming Wilcox and Jim are quite frankly…,stupid

Agree with this. The ridiculous fees we’ve seen can only be good for us long term when trying to sell players

Hypothetically, if we look to sell Amad we can quite easily point to recent transfers and demand 70m

Weve been so bad at selling. I still can’t fathom the summer we sold rafael for around 3M and Nani for 5M.

We spent less then Ipswich did, we barely sold anyone and most of the budget was spent on 2 former squad players. INEOS incompetence can be seen across the board across all their football clubs (OGC Nice and Lausanne). At one point things got so tense that fans ended up trading blows with the players and the captain went on criticizing INEOS. Now let's hope that Shaw keeps himself fit across all the season cause these morons couldn't even sign a LB on loan.
