Harry Amass | 2026/27 Performances

Clubs are more committed to development when they have the upside of a future sale. He isn’t going to develop here from the looks of it. If we rate him hat highly, we would have a clause to buy him back.

I’m guessing we’ve been backed into a corner with this one. Carrick probably can’t see him challenging for a first team place this season, Amass wants first team football and won’t commit while that’s not on offer. , A loan will not be worthwhile as he’d be free next summer. At least with a sale we can insert buy back clauses or percentage of future sales so that we are covered if he develops like it looks like he might do.

Selling him is fine as long as we have a relatively low buy-back clause in there. That way he gets a move to a team who are incentivised to play him and build around him (instead of a loan where they may favour one of their own players), he can settle down there knowing he'll be there for a while instead of constantly getting loans to different clubs, and if he does kick on and become a good player we can get him back relatively easily.

It's something we should be doing more often with players in these kinds of situation.

Imagine selling Amass and Carreras for about £15m.
Alvaro still winds me up as he was/is tailor made to be a Shaw replacement or rotation as he’s physically strong, good size, great on the ball, good range of passing, great positionally and a great delivery into the box yet ETH decided we need Malacia instead.

If he is refusing to sign a new contract I'd take back my stance entirely.

But I haven't seen anything to claim he is unwilling to sign a contract or wants some unreasonable bump.

I can only ever work with the information that is currently available. Of course if something later comes out which better explains a decision then I am happy to alter my opinion.
I think how those negotiations and assessments proceed is not accessible to us, and in fact it would reflect badly on either the club or the players representation if it were. We can - and should - see only a small and somewhat random part of the picture in these deliberations.

For me, knowing that much of the facts are missing makes for expressing more cautious and balanced opinions, rather than point fingers and make strong claims based on little and be happy to change these claims later.

But then again, to quote Marx: I have my principles, and if you don’t like them, well, then I have others.

Smacks of the Garner transfer for me.

Both highly rated for United and England. Both standout performers for the u18s. Both been captain at u18 level. Both established themselves as good Championship players at a young age.

And like with Garner we will be told by the same people who love to bet against our academy players, that he isn't good enough, doesn't have the potential and that whatever fee we get for him is fine.

I didn’t realise he had that much loan experience. How many appearances did he manage?
Sorry he got injured in his spell at Norwich, but won sheffields player of the year.

Lewis Hall had made nine appearances for Chelsea and feel like it was similar to Amass, Obviously very talented but some questions over his physicality and whether he could handle the PL. Didn’t even have a loan move like Amass. Sold for £28m plus £7m in add ons and it was still a bad sale from Chelsea

Well we tend to get quite a bit though don't we?

How much of it you believe is obviously for all of us to decide but just as a random example we got quite a lot of reports that Vitek wouldn't want to come and be a backup then it proved to be true based on his own interview.

I reckon if Amass goes then down the line we will get some sort of insight as to the reasoning. I'm not going to assume that he's being difficult about a contract without reason.

And much like Amass fans just complained that he "wasn't ready" and "needed to bulk up" and "wasn't fast enough".

If you pointed out he had a great loan at Preston there was always some caveat to be dug up as to why he needed more time... that we weren't seeing what the coaches see in training, then he walked right into Benfica's 1st XI and the rest is history.... kind of like Pogba.

If we sell Amass and he goes on to do well it will be fully unsurprising. The one big knock on this club is that it just can't develop first-team talent. Not that the candidates aren't at the club, but that they just fail to help players grow.

Why wouldn’t we renew?
Well maybe he doesn’t want to and could be pushing for a move away if he doesn’t see a clear path into the team? He’s old enough that he could start playing regularly on a lower level already.

It's quite simple, he has one year left on his contract and probably is gonna be third choice next season (at best, fourth if Hall signs) and maybe play what 10 games maximum? Offering him a bigger contract now would be crazy...

Selling him now, hopefully with a decent buyback clause, is a good decision for everyone.

I predict he'll have a solid career as a mid-lower Premier League/top of the Championship player and nobody will be missing him at OT in 18 months.

What's funny also is if the club announced a new contract and put him in the first team picture, the same people on this thread would be saying the club had no ambition and we should be spending loads of money on (insert name of latest good Premier League player).

No, I agree, it’s better not to assume alot about others without reason

Who says he's not of the quality? He's a fantastic young player.

Jimmy Murphy player of the year.
Captained both Utd and England youth teams.
Cracking loan under difficult circumstances last season.
Even on the weekend he looked miles better than Shaw when he came on.

And he gets zero chance to break through in a position we are desperate for.

Appalling decision.
IMO the only way it makes sense is that the club thinks that Diego Leon is a better bet than Amass

I really hope he will become the first player we trigger the (potential) buyback clause for. Because Shaw is getting older and I think Amass will become a really good player with the right move.

It's a shame that the club don't see him in the first team picture but this feels like it's definitely driven by the contract situation for a player who's on the fringe of being a squad player. We have typically sold poorly but I hope there's a good buy back clause in there and we sell to a club with a genuine chance of promotion to the PL (so he can keep developing, then make the step up).

Two related thoughts:
  1. Certainly this news means that Hall is now under deeper consideration (even if the club are toying with the idea of Dalot/Yoro being RBs and Shaw/Maz being LBs)?
  2. I'll always remember how Amass was on the pitch for the 5-4 win against Lyon - what a great experience for him!

Don 't mind selling him. But 6M is too low in today's market.

Plus we should definitely insert a sell-on clause

Buyback clause seems the most sensible way to handle this. Maybe two and a half times whatever someone wants to pay.

I suppose in theory we could try and offer him a one year extension and loan him but he probably wants a bit of clarity himself.

Chelsea got £28m+7 or so for Lewis Hall after I think 10 games of adult football. If we buy Hall for £70m and sell Amass for £6m, it would at least be a clear indicator that we don’t see him as the next Lewis Hall!

City have sold Trafford, Bazunu, Lavia and Delap for between £15-20m each after next to no playing time.
Those city players that went to Southampton.. dodgy PSR dealing right there

He was on loan to Newcastle in 23/24 and played 22 times before they committed to buying him

It was a loan with an obligation to buy according to the reports at that time.
He didnt even play half the premier league games during his season at loan.. 18 games in the league. So not sure if any appearance based clause wouldve been triggered.. was probably just a straight up obligation.

I'm not going to be harsh about Leon but having watched a fair bit of both, I think that would require some really bad judgment.
Haven't seen Leon play but the reports I've seen weren't pretty reading, I think they need to give Amass a chance, I've seen enough of him to think he has some promise

He is at least worth 20 mil with the current going rate for youth talent + English premium.

I'd keep him. Sink or swim season.

I find it bizarre that the club would be prepared to cash in for just £6m. Sign him up to a new contract and give him some cameos this season in the cup competitions. If he's not happy with that role, loan him out in January and look to sell next summer instead of palming him off on the cheap now.

Might be a case of Amass not being willing to sign a deal. He has one year left on his contract.

It's a difficult situation for the club this.

The mistake was ultimately not giving him a twelve month extension last year to give us a bit of leeway and see how performed at Championship level.

I'm not sure he's shown enough to warrant a big new contract and at least assurances of regular first team football.

I think selling him, even for a low fee, with a decent buyback would be a good solution. It also means he can leave on amicable terms which presumably means he'd be mire willing to come back in say two years time.
