Get a buy back in the deal and I'm okay with it. If it's funding the Lewis Hall deal, who is an established top flight player and only 2 years older, it makes sense.

For people doubting if a £6m fee is enough, what level club do you think he would go to if he leaves? Surely it will be no better than the Championship. How much do those clubs typically spend on full backs?

Whitwell in The Athletic. We are considering a sale and want 6M with a number of clubs interested.
Fair enough. I guess if he isn't signing a contract we are in a bit of a bind.

I've always though he looked good if a bit slight and that another loan would be preferable. If we get a decent buyback option on him then selling might not be the worst idea.

The fee isnt the issue.
He is 19. I feel there is plenty of potential and would like to see him get a chance. If not this season, then a new contract+loan to a decent club would be ideal.

Too early to give up on..

I’d wonder if we are even much above breaking even by selling him for £6m, when you take it the cost of purchase, all the fees that would have included, his wages, his development etc….like many have said in here, you’d hope we’d be smart enough to put in a buy back clause, and a sell on percentage if we are sorting him go that cheaply.

This is the thing though, we need to be careful about potentially leaving him in purgatory for years with different loan moves.

I genuinely think a sale with a buyback clause is a better option than giving him say a four year contract and a string of loan moves.

At the moment he's probably top end championship and lower premiership. He's a very good player for his age, who knows how he'll develop but I'd keep him here and give him games personally. Backup to Shaw seems the ideal introduction for him unless we are going to go get Robinson or Hall.

If he won't sign a contract then we have little choice but this screams of another player unwisely lost.

How many have we actually unwisely lost? People will point to Carreras and he was a loss in terms of the value of transfer fee we could potentially get but in reality he’s not that good. If he’s still at Real in a year I’ll be amazed.

People were up in arms about us selling Charlie Savage and Zidane Iqbal a couple of years ago too.

I like him, but he played half a season at one of the worst (the worst?) teams in the Championship, is 19 and has a year left on his contract. £6 million sounds about fair if we get first option or a buy back for something like 20 million.
I saw 6 matches he played for Wednesday and he was very good in 5 of them, positionally all over the place in the other. Definite potential but talk of £20 million is a bit mad.

We should include buy back clause. Otherwise, it's a fine deal as we have to sell at least someone.

No way, 6 Million for a 19 year old English LB that's been involved in the youth national teams for years. Also had a good loan in the Championship is cheap. He'd be worth £20M at least if it was Chelsea especially in this market. Name me another LB that fits all of that criteria. Hall and O'Reilly are the only other ones that are close to that criteria at that age. Both who would be worth 10x that 6M now

As has been mentioned many times in this thread, his contract is up next year. With a year left it normally at least halves the value of a player, so under normal circumstances you can assume we’d get around £12-15m which is fair for an unproven fullback (albeit bags of potential and I’d prefer we’d try and renew)

£6million is more than decent for a League One-Championship level player like Amass. Glad to see the club agrees with my previous assessment of him not being at the level required by PL.

I would be gutted if we sold him, he looks a real prospect. Then again, ive seen him a handful of times, maybe ive missed something?

Given we have Maz who can play left and right, Dalot can also play left and right, Shaw is the left and Dorgu can deputise there if ever needed, surely the logic would be to give this guy some chances this year in cup games and lower league teams. Id personally save the money on a left back and invest more in the midfield or a back up striker.

Surely we have learnt something about shifting talented youngsters for peanuts. The lad that went to Madrid via Benfica, Garner and Elanaga, we really could have gotten more. I hope Ineos know what they are doing.

He's good on the ball, but still a weak link defensively. He'd get horribly exposed in a back 4 in the Premier League right now, and I'm not sure that will change in the near future unless he suddenly gains a lot more pace and power.

He could become a decent PL player in the future, but I think he's more likely to be, say, the next Aaron Cresswell rather than the next Luke Shaw.

Come on man. Savage's 99th percentile outcome was McTominay. Iqbal wasn't some star in the academy. He didn't play much in the youth teams. He's actually done really well for where he was at.

Amass is a different type. He's probably more likely to not make it given that most prospects turn out in that manner, but he has certainly performed well enough in our youth teams, performed well on his short loan, and has technical quality that deserves a chance at making it at United.

I usually reserve this type of opinion for our best talents like Mainoo, Lacey, Gomes, Greenwood, Garner, Hannibal, Januzaj, Laird, etc... He's more in the Garner bracket, but still one that deserves a chance.

I had no idea his contract is running down. Anyone know if there's been some disagreement between him and the club?

£6m is an absolute joke and will look silly very quickly I expect. I'm really annoyed he's not going to be given a shot at a first team role given Shaw's age and injury proneness.

If we're willing to sell him for £6m, it suggests he's not that highly rated internally. We only have an ageing Shaw, Dorgu, who seems to be used more as a left winger these days, and Mazraoui, who's naturally a rightback filling in at leftback. If there was ever a perfect time for him to break into the squad, it's now.

His contract is running down, and if the club doesn't see him as good enough to even fill a squad role, then I can understand why they're looking to sell him. I just hope this doesn't turn into another Alvaro Fernandez situation.

So short-sighted by the club if we sell him.
Lewis Hall is going to be very expensive as Newcastle have recently shown they do not sell cheap and we are not desperate in the LB position anyway.
He can be backup to Shaw and he can play Cup games and then we can gauge if he is capable or not.

If the club don't think he's good enough to even be a squad player then that seems like a "them" problem, and like I said before. we've been here before with Alvaro.

It won't even make 10% of what Newcastle will want for Hall.

I'm not sure we were up in arms but it's true we more often than not get these calls right.

But we've also got a couple of sales wrong lately. We've also got plenty of loan decisions wrong.

Amass is on a different level to Iqbal and Savage. He'll have a good career if he stays away from injury.

If we're willing to sell him for £6m, it suggests he's not that highly rated internally.
Think it could be one of three things: that you mention there is one possibility, him not being willing to sign a new contract is another or thirdly moving more towards selling with a sensible buy back option rather than endless loans. Guess we’ll have to see if that is included.

Interesting. I thought he was supposed to be higly rated young player - in a position that is clearly a weakness (at least on squad level).

Part of me thinks (and is a bit reluctant to admit) we have a bunch of academy graduates that we want to promote and speak higly of, but don't rate highly at all (internally). I remember when we used to have really good prospects in the academy, a lot of them I was certain will "make it" on top level (didn't happen) and in comparison the current academy individuals look quite underwhelming. Lacey is another one I can definitely see going if there's any interest from the market (really strange we want to keep him as 3rd/4th winger, he will barely play). Both Amass and Lacey look a bit "weak" to play such intense roles as fullback and winger.

Based on the reports he's sought after by Championship clubs. Not sure if he's even that highly rated as some people believe? I don't mind selling him with a good bayback clause, if he was very higly rated we would've handled that situation differently I guess. He probably wants regular playing time which we can't/won't offer, due to contract situation a loan is unlikely. I'm not too bothered with this deal honestly.

It was the exact same reaction in here when they were being sold. Also off the back of good pre season performances. I’m genuinely bemused as to what level of club people think Amass will be sold to and how much people think he is worth.

The issue with Alvaro was that we seemingly we messed him about a bit so he was never coming back even if we wanted him.

I think letting Amass leave for a small fee gives him presumably a better mix of clubs to choose from and keeps the relationship positive between us and him. If he thrives for the next couple of years, he can come back for a decent fee with solid experience behind him.

Is that supposed 6m going to make such a large difference to our financials to make it worthwhile?
Why not just keep him for the season and see what happens instead?
Who knows, maybe he makes the LB position his own as the season progresses or at least becomes a very reliable squad player that will be worth having around on an improved contract instead of getting the 6m which is peanuts in this market anyways.
He certainly has something about him and we’ve got a long season ahead.

£6m sounds like a pitiful amount. If they don't rate him highly enough to make the breakthrough here then he should have been sold in a previous window when his contract situation wasn't such an issue. Last summer he could have gone for a lot more being an 18 year old on the back of just making handful of senior appearances for United.

Even in January before his loan to Norwich there were suggestions of PL interest which would presumably have been for a permanent move. Waiting until now is the worst possible timing for a sale.

Again, I don't think the finances here are the only thing being considered.

The player himself presumably wants more first team football and as good as he might be, we can't guarantee that yet.

Ultimately, he isn't ready to be a regular first team squad member and that puts the club in a difficult position.

I think the ts and cs of the sale are what's important. A good buyback clause or even sell on clause are needed.

I am pretty sure if the coaching staff saw more potential in him, this is what would've hapenned. Like you say, 6m isn't that much overall. Him wanting to play regular football is also another factor. He's not ready to play a lot of minutes and that's the baseline, everything else is speculative.

He'd just turned 18, started PL games and also played twice in the Europa League knockout stages. Aston Villa were rumoured to be interested in signing him a few months before that so I think he could have gone for at least double what they seem to be looking for now.

All speculation but it seems only Championship clubs are chasing him, I don't know if 6m for 18yo defender is cheap or expensive there. If there are no offers we will keep him, but otherwise 6m suggests we are just ready to offload him rather than give another season (probably on the bench). What doesn't sound like a wrong move to me as I don't think he's anywhere ready.

I don't think the club wanted to sell him at all and were thinking of a long term integration plan, but he got a really bad injury at Norwich at the worst possible time.

We can't know for certain, but perhaps the club have been trying to tie him down to a new contract so they can send him on loan again. They can't loan him now, when his contract expires next summer. If he's refused that though and wants to keep his options open then there's not much more they can do but sell him now with a buyback.

There's a lot of teeth gnashing in this thread but ultimately this is a bit of a weird situation that the player and his agent most likely allowed to develop. The interest from Villa before he'd even gone on loan probably emboldened him, as they would have offered a contract beyond anything we would currently consider.

Alvaro Fernandez all over again while we inevitably have a nightmare at LB again in the coming years.

People need to get over the obsession with buybacks as well. They are largely pointless. We had one for Alvaro and didn’t use it while he was sold for over 3 times the clause to Real Madrid instead. In a couple years why would an East London kid like Amass want to come back to a club who refused to give him a chance over one of the big London clubs?

The potential sale of Amass for £6m is depressing, he's one of the players I was most excited to see more of next year.

For a full back, he's a proper baller whose technical ability specifically matches with what top teams would want, but struggle to find, in a full back. He's shone through the academy as one of the brightest lights. He took on one of the hardest loans in one of the toughest leagues at 18, going into the dogs' dinner that was Sheff Wed, improving his defensive skills, tenacity and body strength whilst underlining his ability to get forward and attack. He comes across as a driven and brave player who will only get better and strives to improve. He couldn't have done more - or set a better example to other academy players - to get an opportunity.

There's so much talk of the importance of a first team pathway from our academy and yet the two arguably closest to the first team - Vitek and Amass - look like they've been plumped up to sell at the first opportunity. Yes we've got to get better at selling but Amass at £6m feels like a big risk.

Slightly more understanding of Vitek's situation (although a loan would be better if fees are in the same or lower ballpark) with Lammens ahead of him but Amass makes little sense, with the mileage on Shaw, Dorgu's position undecided and Maz/Dalot out of position. Suggests we're serious about Hall but in an era of prudence, is £50-£60m on Hall a wise move when we are selling Amass for ten times less? Not to mention the intrinsic value of potentially adding a talented academy player into the first team for the long term. And if we've moving towards a more dominant, possession-based game with our midfield recruits, Amass's technical capabilities will be invaluable.

Just hope the low fee means we'll push for a buyback option at below the potential future market rate but if he has good options, it is not a given that he'll want to come back.

Our loans don't seem to have a high success rate for us. Maybe we are trying to change the strategy and let young players leave the club for only a bit of money if the contract includes a reasonable buy back. A bit like Madrid is doing.
