£6m is so damn cheap. Why even bother selling him. Could at least say 10-15m. Still nothikg but not pennies.
Maybe nobody actually wants to sign him for a higher amount?£6m is so damn cheap. Why even bother selling him. Could at least say 10-15m. Still nothikg but not pennies.
Re bit in bold, this would work if he had three years left on his contract but he doesn't.The kid played 20 matches in the Championship at 18 years old. Utd are thin at LB, and if/when Shaw gets injured, we could be in trouble.
It looks like a perfect setup for the club, you have the position covered by a youth product in case the first-team player gets injured. And he costs virtually nothing. If he fails, you evaluate and move on next summer.
Why would you sell the kid for £6m? That makes zero football and economic sense.
We're not thin at left back, we lack top quality, at least in terms of offensive output. The kid played 20 matches in the Championship at 18 years old. Utd are thin at LB, and if/when Shaw gets injured, we could be in trouble.

Exactly. We're not thin at left back, we lack top quality, at least in terms of offensive output.
Amass would arguably be fifth choice without counting Licha or Heaven.
Most people up in arms about this seem to think we can just tie him down to a new contract without Amass having any say in signing a contract at all.

That's the issue. There's always the fear Shaw breaks down for a long time, and if we see Amass as the next option he could end up a regular starter when we have no idea if he's capable. So we need more than that as backup for that position. Indeed, we may actually need a starter rather than a backup.
Selling him for 6m is cheap I mean we signed double T from Bottlers T for 8m. There again every man and his dog knows by now that we're shit in selling. Should we sell him though? If we're not bringing in a top quality LB then the answer is no. If we're bringing a top quality LB and we're getting rid of Rashford then no (unless we're adding a cover for either LW or LB). Having said that if we're adding a LB then the answer is probably yes. Let's face it guys, we're skint so every little helps.
Or Amass doesn't want to sign a new contract because it means he'll go on loan again or not play very much. He’s out of contract at the end of the season.
So we would essentially be paying/giving up £6mil to keep him for the next year.
Of course, we could put him on a new contract but obviously those who see him day in day out don’t think he’s worth it.
Left back options are currently Shaw, Dorgu or Maz. Question marks over all of them, but non of those question marks get answered by keeping Amas, unless he turns out to be a first team starter, which his coaches likely think won’t happen.
The answer is to go out and get a long term replacement for Shaw
Except that Amass is potentially one for the future, but capable of serving as Shaw's cover for now. If Carrick doesn't see a future for Amass at OT, then by all means sell now -- but by all means buy a proper LB now to usurp Shaw as he winds down his United career.
Whether it's 6m or 12m I don't really care, but if the sale of Amass is in the cards, that tells me that United have a plan for a LB this summer.
Or Amass doesn't want to sign a new contract because it means he'll go on loan again or not play very much.
The thing about serving as Shaw's cover, you have to be prepared to play a good chunk of the season, due to Shaws injury record (prior to last season).
And even if Shaw did stay fit again the whole season, he won't play 50 games, so Amass would need to be starting at least 10 to 15.
I don't think he's ready to be a Premier League starter.
Agree. From the admittedly small sample sizes i have seen, Amass seems to have a real chance of making it as a PL player to me. In a position we need, no less. I would take a chance on him, if he signs a New contract.I like what he's shown so far in preseason so may preference would be to keep him but he would need to sign a new contract.
Were we supposed to hold him at gunpoint in order to get him to sign a new deal? Why have we let him run down his contract?
Doh. Yeah? Were we supposed to hold him at gunpoint in order to get him to sign a new deal?
Or he could be like our very own Ethan Laird who most people thought was a shoe in to make it at United and he’s 24 now and not played a minute in the PL.He's basically Lewis Hall at Chelsea a few years back. We'll all wonder why we didn't keep him four-five years down the line when he looks fkn great for a CL club.
He is exactly the type of player that we should have as our squad players, in his case possibly not right now but in a year or two.
Obviously I don’t know but he’s always seemed very driven to make it here.Or Amass doesn't want to sign a new contract because it means he'll go on loan again or not play very much.
Quite possibly, but clubs don't judge young players purely on their ability and future potential. They judge them also on what space they have in their current squad. Obviously your 17/18 year old Giggs or Rooney are going to be worth a spot immediately, but other players aren't going to be for another few years. I'd like to see us having a bit more patience with 'our' juniors, even if Amass was technically borrowed from Watford.Or he could be like our very own Ethan Laird who most people thought was a shoe in to make it at United and he’s 24 now and not played a minute in the PL.
That’s the thing with young players, nobody knows but if Carrick doesn’t fancy him then 6m is better than zero, no?
I remember at the time saying we should at least be activating the clause and doing the sale ourselves if we really do want him to be sold (which was not the move).Alvaro Fernandez all over again while we inevitably have a nightmare at LB again in the coming years.
People need to get over the obsession with buybacks as well. They are largely pointless. We had one for Alvaro and didn’t use it while he was sold for over 3 times the clause to Real Madrid instead. In a couple years why would an East London kid like Amass want to come back to a club who refused to give him a chance over one of the big London clubs?
Collyer didn't have much hype as far as academy products because he was bought at age 19 from Brighton and didn't play much for the youth/reserve sides really. There is a tendency for United fans to overhype academy products - the hype around the likes of Collyer and Wilson I never understood for example.
However, we've had a couple of stinkers in the last few years with Carreras and Garner being let go when they could have been very useful for us. It feels like we're prioritising short term financial gain over actually trying to get players to a level they can contribute. Amass is one of our better talents and only 19, extend his contract and give him another loan - even if he only ends up a back up player in his position, it's better that than having to buy your squad players.
You need homegrown players to fill out the squad. Shaw/Maguire/Rashford/Mount will be gone over the next couple of years where I can see us being forced to spend a fortune on overpriced homegrown players from other clubs because we're maxing out our foreign player limit.
Laird has been plagued by injuries almost his whole career.Or he could be like our very own Ethan Laird who most people thought was a shoe in to make it at United and he’s 24 now and not played a minute in the PL.
That’s the thing with young players, nobody knows but if Carrick doesn’t fancy him then 6m is better than zero, no?
It was the exact same reaction in here when they were being sold. Also off the back of good pre season performances. I’m genuinely bemused as to what level of club people think Amass will be sold to and how much people think he is worth.
It's the correct move and one that looks decisive. Iqbal is a good player but he never really stood out in the youth teams. And ten Hag brought him along on the pre-season tour and people got a little carried away with how he performed in meaningless warm up games.
The move to Utrecht looks good on paper and I hope he does well. And if he does well then we have a large sell on clause (per Ornstein) to benefit from. Post Fergie we've kept young players around too long due to indecision among the managers and Ed Woodward. Make a decision on Hannibal as well and we need to either play him or sell him imo.
The likes of Mainoo and Gore are up next.
Should be thanking Ten Hag for giving him as much exposure to the first team as he did.
Ten Hag even played a part in getting him to Utrecht.
Iqbal couldn’t even make matchdays for our u18s, he was nowhere near making it in the first team.
He was also clearly never told he was going to play otherwise he’d talk about Ten Hag telling him that rather than some guff about Lisandro Martinez.
I dont see much i would call "hype" tbh, mostly just People acknowledging the obvious problem we have at left back with shaw being the only real candidate if Amass is sold for pennies.Yeah the hype here isn't incredibly justified to be honest.
Just peeked through the Brandon Williams threads and jesus christ the overrating of him.
What if he doesn't fancy signing a new contract and being on a loan again?Amass is one of our better talents and only 19, extend his contract and give him another loan - even if he only ends up a back up player in his position, it's better that than having to buy your squad players.
He's arguably behind Dorgu, Dalot and Mazraoui as well until he's shown more in senior games.I dont see much i would call "hype" tbh, mostly just People acknowledging the obvious problem we have at left back with shaw being the only real candidate if Amass is sold for pennies.
The situation seems so easily handled by trusting Amass to be a relief option to Shaw. I dont think that willingness to give him a chance in these circumstances equates to "hype".
Thats the thing. It seems to be a very good opportunity given our squad, him coming off a successful loan and our need to invest in other positions.Hard to do when you never actually get senior games....
Clearly. But that doesnt mean that mere 'fans on a football forum" arent allowed to disagree, or that the manager is always correct.Maybe our coaches and manager who see him train on a day to day basis do not currently rate him as highly as fans on a football forum do.
Agreed on Amorim, but why use him as an example when he's long gone and we have a new set of coaches and manager who have just proven in the past season that they can progress the team? Let's trust our current structure who look like they are competent and not the previous set of idiots.Clearly. But that doesnt mean that mere 'fans on a football forum" arent allowed to disagree, or that the manager is always correct.
This line of thinking would for instance exonerate every decision that Amorim made, because he watched the team train every day and made the correct choices because he had the data close at hand.
Did he feck, though.
