Team news - both teams missing key players

As well as Yoro and Hojlund, Manchester United are set to be without defenders Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka at Wembley.
In addition, centre-back Lisandro Martinez only rejoined the squad this week after taking part in Argentina's successful defence of their Copa America crown.

Just 17 years of age, big day for the lad. What do we think of him? He hasn't played senior football thus far so this is his rookie year but he is primed to get decent amount of minutes given how injury prone Luke Shaw is. Is Caf okay with blooding another youngster or do we look towards transfer market to sign a backup?

Quite the baptism of fire. I hope it goes well for the kid. He’s got a tough job facing up against whoever’s on the right-wing for City.

I would be fine with him as another LB option over signing someone else.
Would rather we used the funds to sign a midfielder.
Hopefully he grabs the opportunity and we can have a starting LB who is fit, for a change, been impressed with what I saw from him.

People forgetting this isn’t the 1990’s anymore, Barcelona changed the landscape, its a new world.

Great opportunity for the lad.

In terms of this game it's bad news.

In terms of this season, it's good that he's being trusted to play against City in a notionally competitive game. Because that suggests he is at least seen as a legit fallback option if worse comes to worse and our fullbacks are hit with injuries. And generally I prefer that over some midfielder being moved out of position to plug the gap.

Fresh Luke Shaw injury?

Sorry if im not up to date, can someone fill me in?

Is Luke injured again? And what’s the nature of the injury?

I thought he was away on extended leave as he played a small part in the euros.

It’s not like we can afford a left back signing anyway, with priorities at other positions seeming more important than getting in a non-broken first-choice left back.

All the best to the kid. He has looked good in pre-season albeit with significant defensive weaknesses.

I don't think he's actually injured, just not match fit.

ETH said that there were question marks over Lindelof, AWB and Shaw for this game. Whether it was due to a knock for Shaw, or if it's just that we're being extra precautious with him (which is probably a good idea), I don't think anyone knows.

Of course Shaw gets injured. Of course he does

Good luck to Amass I guess. I can’t imagine it’ll be the strongest City side on paper and nor will it be a side that Guardiola will drill into them as a must-win game. Let’s hope he fares better than Evra did in his debut against City.

OMG... Fresh Shaw's injury? We have not even started the season we have 3 key players Shaw, Yoro and Hojlund

Just always assume Shaw is injured unless he’s on the team sheet.

The fitness issues we have at this club are astonishing, whether injuries or 'not match fit', surely something in ETH's methods are in part to blame here. It's crazy.

If he can stay fit, he'll be more useful than most of our other defenders. I don't mind even a bad performance, just don't get injured for the love of god

Shaw should be moved on next season. Or at the very least this is his last contract with the club. No point persisting with the guy, how long does he have left on his contract?

Amass is not ready, he's defensively naive.

Thanks for sharing. Thread title scared me.

To be honest, I'm just going to focus on our promising youth this season, so, happy to see Amass start.
Be great if he showed he can do well at this level.

I'm all for playing young players but when a kid is only 17 and just not yet ready, it's more harmful than good to play him. Reckless from us to be in this position.

I used to be frustrated with Shaw's injuries, but at some point, you just have to accept that "injured" is his default setting. It sucks, but it is what it is.

As for Amass, I hope the kid knocks it out of the park!

The guy deserves to have his contract terminated at this point. But hey at least he was fit enough for the Euros.

Erik said it is more Luke being out of form and being cautious considering how injury prone he is

Either way, it was abysmal that he went to Euros after missing half season for us and now he is not ready again. It's not just the Community Shield, but if he is not ready for this game clearly he is not playing 90mins against Fullham and that is letting the club down, the club that pays his wages, fans who support him

C’mon, let’s not let that get in the way of us piling onto Luke Shaw.

There is no official update on him but rumor mill suggested he picked up an injury during pre-season. So, it's a combination of not enough game time to gain fitness plus potentially healing an injury which means he is not fit enough for start of the season.

Who says he isn't ready? He'll be fine we throw in lots of young players and they tend to raise their games for such occasions.

Even If he has a bad game we're expected to lose anyway and it's really only a glorified preseason trophy.

You guys reckon this guy could be next in line of becoming a starter in the near future after Garnacho and Mainoo? I haven't seen too much of him tbh.

Let's be honest, we are not going to see much of Shaw/Malacia this season so the left back position is his to make. But going into new season relying on an 18 year old is where Utd are as a club so we deserve everything we get!

Unpopular opinion but he's nowhere near the other two at the same age. He looks like a raw talent who used to play in midfield, decent technical ability, decent delivery but panics when pressed and poor in terms of positioning.

He's very raw and hopefully I end up with an egg on my face but I really don't see it.

Perhaps it's really a time to stop relying on players who failed multiple times in the past.

Get him on that pitch, it's just a bloody shield you can eat breakfast on, anyway.

Always good to see an academy kid getting first team starts. It's a United thing!

Trial by fire and all that, this one. But hope he kicks on and becomes a regular

Glad he's being trusted but I think it's a year early for him to start the tougher games.

The majority of other players who played in the final of the Euros or Copa America won't be playing 90 minutes in the first league game either.

Hmm okay. Luckily those things can be taught, although if he struggles with that at academy level too it might be tough. Looking forward to seeing him today.
