People complain there are no good CBs nowadays, but one mistake in a match and you’re considering having a bad game. With those requirements I don’t there has ever been a good CB.
The same people will say Upamecano should be signed for £70m. In his last 2 CL games where I have watched him, defensively he has been shocking

Not saying he isn't a good player, just that every player makes mistakes. They are human.

Players go through bad form, bad patches does not mean they are useless.

Becuase saying a £80m CB doesnt need a CB is just naive and shows lack of football understanding.

Liverpool ended up with VVD yes, didnt Liverpool spend £40m after VVD? a CDM to protect the back 4? Didnt they also spend £60m on a keeper? Why do you need a keeper then?

If you understand modern football, it is obvious that teams need CDM's. I can name every team that has won something, they have WC CDM's, we don't have one so we play 2.

Kimmich, Casemeiro, Fernandinho, Fabinho, Busquets.

Is Mark Goldbridge a footballing specialist? He thinks Luke Shaw is the best LB in the league..
Lack of football understanding?. Your post makes no sense mate.

A goalkeeper needs protection in front not the other way around.

The fact is Maguire is not good enough so we have to play CDMs in front and this prevents us from playing our best 11.

Ole doesn't want to admit his transfer mistake so continues to play Maguire even if it's to the detriment of the team.

Cant wait for Mr Poch to come in and sort this mess out.

Do you only play Fifa and Football manager?

There is no football team that wins stuff without a CDM. I dont know how you can fail to understand this?

Looks like Klopp made mistakes signing VVD because he bought a CDM to play infront of him and won the league.

Looks like Pep makes mistakes everywhere he goes because he plays a CDM everywhere he goes.
Busquets for Barca, Kimmich / Lahm for Bayern and Fernandinho for City.

He was expensive but I’m not surprised. We needed an experienced CB but not too old and someone who would fit right in. Not many to available at highest level. Upamecano is a great prospect but one will have to pay up big money for something that may not turn out well. Maybe he’ll get rid of his poor sides, maybe not. I personally don’t think we need another prospect, not a top CB, but instead a reliable CB who played PL for at least 6-7 seasons.

People watch our games through slow motion ten times every situation and discuss if the CB took the right decision or not. The CB had to make the decision full speed in half a second.

Agreed, its a snap decision. Just have a look at some of the nonsense the poster above is trying to argue.. Maguire is crap thats why we play with CDM..

When almost every top football club plays a CDM. People dont seem to understand balance in football. just because you pay £80m for a CB, it doesnt mean we dont need protection infront of the back 4.

You do understand that if goalkeepers and CDMs make good contributions and make fewer mistakes, it makes work of a centre back easier, right? Attributes like more accurate goal kicks, good handling during corner, more forward passes as opposed to backward ones, better anticipation, better pressing ability shield defenders from being exposed too often and thus gives them lesser opportunities to look wank. I'm not arguing that Maguire was made to look bad by GK and CDMs. I'm refuting your argument that good CDMs and GKs don't help defenders.

The fact is Maguire is not good enough so we have to play CDMs in front and this prevents us from playing our best 11.
Actually, our forwards cannot press well and our midfielders individually aren't good enough to provide protection for the backline. Watch some of the games from start of the season and you will see opposition defenders and midfielders cutting through our offensive and midfield line with greatest of ease. This is why we need two CDMs. I don't think any defender in the world will look spotless in current Man Utd team without pairing of McT and Fred or Matic and Fred.

Ole doesn't want to admit his transfer mistake so continues to play Maguire even if it's to the detriment of the team.
You'd think Ole is smart enough to worry more about his job safety rather than proving his transfer was right. If anything, people blame Woodward for high fee and not Ole. Ole will face no backlash if he drops Maguire. Maybe the truth is, he simply doesn't have a better CB at his disposal.

Edit: Saw your post history and you're either complaining about the manager during bad games or taking about how players would leave us during good games. You sound like a Twitter handle desperate to stay relevant. Don't expect a response from me if you quote this post.

So we keep a team to only 2 shots on goal and keep a clean sheet and our defense was poor. You're having a laugh. And to think that these are our own supporters spouting this crap. Such a toxic fanbase
Do we often see Harry command his back line? Have you forgotten how sluggish he got pass by other strikers? We played against westbrom who is bottom team of the league while OGS opted for matic and Fred in the midfield in order to cover up his back line. Do you mind I were to ask you if you are being too optimistic and linear about him?

How
After VVD was signed, LFC improved defensively.

Didnt we improve defensively last season?

Thiago Silva was captain in some games and he hasnt been there as long as Maguire?
It really is frustrating, we all know and we all accept he wasnt worth £80m. You know what? get over it. Its 2 years ago, we need to stop crying over the fee.

Those fans also need to accept that Maguire is a good CB. Its as if none of them have seen a CB make mistakes.
He is a good but nowhere near top center back while bearing the most expensive defender in the history.

Yes we did improve our back line by spending 80 millions on Maguire, 30 millions on Lindelof, 30 millions on Shaw and 50 millions on Bissaka. Is the back line really solid and worth the money we paid for?
Thiago Silva is named as captain because of his age, experience, ex captain for both PSG and Milan. Yet he has been automatically selected as center back in Brazil team whenever he is fit. Would you compare him with Harry?

Yes...we see him command his back line all the time. Problem is Goldbridge has brainwashed you. Maguire is one of the best central defenders in the game. Lose the agenda and actually watch him. My guess is he can do 10 great things and you will ignore them, but one thing isn't perfect and "he's the worst ever". Hell, you're still going on about a goal last year where he got caught flat footed. I saw VVD give up a very similar goal this year and you don't see Liverpool fans writing him off. It's gotten to the point where anything outside of a perfect performance is looked down upon by "pratts" like you. Give your head a shake...

Honestly thought he was our worst player today in comparison to many others who had a great match.

Huge consistency issues. He may look good 1 game and then have 3-4 average/mediocre matches
Piss poor aerial threat

Why the hell does our captain needs to be told by the coaching staff to drop off from an opposition gold kick? Thought he would have learnt that aged 10!
Passing was awful and puts others beside him under pressure.

May as well start calling him calamity Maguire. Always a mistake in him. Did we really spend £80m on a slightly better Phil Jones but who can stay fit?

Was on a great run of form till the last two games.

Looked absolutely fecked physically, was holding his back in the second half. Easy to criticize him and it wasn't a great performance but he's played an insane amount of football. Even a player with a fantastic fitness record like his needs a rest during this period of football. Unfortunately, with Lindelof possibly out I don't see when the next opportunity to rest him is, and Ole plays him every game anyways.

Demba Ba must be a difficult player to mark, or see, perhaps he's invisible to United's players, otherwise it is hard to explain how he kept getting so many decent chances to score.

The Tuanzebe + Maguire partnership didn't look convincing.

I like him generally but he doesn't leave you calm and assured like he was supposedly bought in to do. Considering his partner is most often going to be one of Lindelof, Bailly, Rojo or Jones, that isn't exactly ideal. He's supposed to be the calm head who keeps the other one in check, but he seems just as headless at times.

When he's not dropping the odd clanger though he's solid. Not the best game tonight, but I think the back 4 as a whole was shaky, and the half time change won't have helped.

Maguire is probably the main reason why we have to play a double pivot against better teams. He just doesn't look capable without real cover. There are some things he excels at. When we're in a low block, having to cope with the ball being slung into the box he's your man. In every other defensive situation though. Reminds me a bit of late stage John Terry. Our calamitous performances when playing a high line remind me of when Villas Boas asked the ageing Terry to be front foot. As long as we have Maguire, like that Chelsea team, we will have to play in a way that compensates for his flaws.

I thought he was good, he made important block in first half and few tackles in second. The only dodgy time he did was the Ba’s heading chance, the rest were few fecked up by Tuanzebe like the back pass to Maguire which forced him to put it away out and the one when Tuanzebe missed heading it and he shoved Maguire from behind which DDG dealt with it.

It was lunacy to make a player with such huge physical limiations (acceleration, turning speed, agility) the most expensive defender in the world.

Those physical limitations mean that there will always be a hard cap on how good he can be in the modern game.

Even ignoring the fee, and taking him for what he is, he's been really poor for a long time. Doesn't inspire confidence, not a leader - vocally or in terms of leading by example, makes one or two big errors a game. Even his heading technique is comical...to be fair, he does win a lot, but they just go wherever he happens to be facing.

The one thing I don't get is his just shockingly poor ability to direct a header on goal. Once again he wastes a great chance and doesn't even get close

Poor tonight, my biggest issue with him for me is that he's walking in that rarefied air of being undroppable like world class players, and he's closer to O'Shea than Rio or Vidic imo, as a squad CB he's fine but I hate that the defense is going to be built around him.

Agree. He deserves a lot of the criticism for his own individual play but he has played far too much.

Ole needs to learn how to rotate and get results from the rest of the team. That includes your Brunos/Rashfords too.

No, as I have mentioned before he is not a £80m centre back but he isnt completely useless.

I’ve noticed a lot of people use Maguire to bash Ole and claim Ole made a bad judgment in signing Maguire.

But was Maguire even an Ole signing? Maguire was identified by Jose the summer before and Josewas desperate for the board to sign him. He actually got cheesed off that the board failed to back him by not signing him. So Maguire was a target before Ole even came in. Utd just went back in again the summer after and ended up paying pretty much what Leicester wanted the first time. It was actually a battle between City and Utd as City were desperate to replace Kompany.

So if anyone is to be bashed over the Maguire signing, should it not be Jose? Even Pep for judging him as a potential signing?

How do you know? The existing manager is not always the one who signs a player.

Surely Jose and Pep’s judgment has to be brought into question as well then as they both wanted him to?

I always get nervous when he starts teetering forward with the ball or plays dangerous passes to de Gea or another defender, putting them under pressure.

If our existing manager isnt always the one who signs players for us, I sincerely hope our ex manager who was just sacked isnt either! And who cares about calling their judgement into question? We have regularly laughed at Pep and his inability to sign defenders.

Sorry, to me this just feels like a way to let Ole off the hook for a bad signing(Not that that's even been decided yet, jury is out and he may still come good)

Strange one yesterday, he actually stood out as our worst player yesterday even in our brilliant first half, then proceeded to get worse from there.
But looking at him it seems like he almost definitely is/was carrying an injury so hopefully he recovers, but I think some time out would be best. We can't afford another performance like that from him at the weekend though, as we'll get decimated by Southampton's speed of play.

Been a couple of occasions recently where he completely loses his man at a set piece and then flails his arms around trying to stop them... Hope it doesn't become a habit

Harry Maguire becoming the new Paul Pogba and splitting the fanbase.

Plain and simple the guy just doesn't cut the mustard. The longer he keeps been undroppable the longer this poor run will go on. The amount of chances given to Istanbul last night was a joke, fair enough demba ba didn't get to run from his own half with it this time but against stronger opposition you just can't get away with such lax defending. I know you can't hold him responsible for the whole defence but he is the captain and he is the one who seems to be uncomfortable in most positions.

Shite with the ball at his feet.
So clumsy when attackers dribble at him.
Doesn't seem to understand the concept of marking from set pieces..... The list goes on.

I'm Ole in, but if maguire was a pep signing and he'd performed like he has the past 2 years he'd be rotting away with the city reserves by now. Offload him in the next year or two when we might actually get a fraction of what we payed back and try again in the market. Honestly sickens me that this guy is captain of Manchester United.
He couldn't lead a monkey to a banana raffle.

He's getting unecessary stick on here imo. Take him out of the team and we're fecked at the back. For me, in spite of what people are saying, he's still the backbone of our team. No problem with him going forward either. Takes responsibility and conducts himself accordingly.

We also scouted Herrera the season before LVG bought him.
