Guess the plan is to keep him for another season so he can see out his contract. Useful as a back up player, but tonight proved why he shouldn’t be relied upon.

Bad, bad night for him. So many mistakes, unforced errors, so many overhit passes, teleported passes. He goes from hero go zero pretty quickly. Nothing was going for him tonight.

Typical chuckle brothers performance alongside Lindelof, they brought out the worst from each other.

Improved once we made the subs, as did the rest of the team.

The mistake he made for the Bilbao goal was genuinely inexplicable. We just needed to hold onto the ball, take no unnecessary risks, he could have played it to Onana who was directly in front of him, but instead played a blind pass behind himself which delivered the ball straight to the opposition.

I really don't understand the thought process required to reach the decision to do what he did, given the circumstances.

Typical Maguire, rightly got a lot of plaudits for the first leg and then all over the shop in the second. Really poor for their goal but lots of players played sloppy passes in bad areas, his got punished though.

The worst thing about the mistake for the goal wasn't his wayward pass but the fact he lost that aerial when the Bilbao just simply leaned into him.

Maguire usually wins 9.9/10 of those. So odd for him to be so passive in his favourite game action. I'd blame Lindelof for that.

I'm glad he's had a relatively positive season and got praise for his impact in the EL particularly.

But I will also be glad when he's not in the starting eleven any more.

Yeah. So tired of him and Lindelöf starting. Harry is a much better defender but his bottom level is every bit as bad as the latter and they both dally on the ball needlessly. We look so much better with Mazraoui at RCB and Yoro at LCB. I hope De Ligt and Shaw are fit enough to start the final.

I wouldn't play him in the final if De Ligt is available. His praise in recent weeks has been for a winning goal and playing on the wing like Yamal but not for his actual defending. Too much of a liability back there and his lack of pace leaves us so vulnerable

Man Utd 0:2 West Ham New
The funniest moment of the game for me was when the West Ham player just waltzed past him while he stood there like a statue unable to move.

Our best defender, apparently.

Similar to the Wan-Bissaka situation a year ago. If someone comes in with a 15m offer, we should accept it instead of waiting for him to leave on a free.

Classic Maguire defending on that second goal, run out, totally miss the ball, lumber back and look on in confusion at the chaos that ensued.

In De Ligt and Yoro we have a bit of a Rio and Vidic pairing, potentially for the next 7-8 seasons. Just build on that and ship Mr 80m out

De Ligt won't be given a contract renewal in my opinion. We'll move on from him or he'll become our new Lindelof. Yoro is the future indeed, and the clubs fortunes on the pitch will have to improve if we are to stave off the likes of Real Madrid from actually turning his head. It doesn't seem very unlikely

Maguire is on his way out, hopefully. I just hope he can help us win the EL if that's not asking too much

Turning him into a cult hero for his late Lyon goal and the cross v Bilbao is dangerous.

He is the same old donkey at the back.

Agreed.

He deserves credit for bailing us out in Europe, but even then, his performances at the back were worrying. He's had a poor season.

Always defended Maguire during that bad spell thought it was so over the top and most of it was Lindelof/De Gea’s fault but not sure how he gets so much praise recently, he’s finished and quite bad these goals don’t change anything

I don’t know how De Ligt gets the hype he does, maybe it’s a Manchester United fan thing where any passionate aggressive player who slides in gets ratings

His header literally received 10x the applause that Mainoo got for his goal, which ironically was more impactful on the result (we were out without it) and technically far harder to execute

I think it's a bit harsh to say he's been poor. He's had an up-and-down season, much like all of our defenders. Had some periods where he was good, had some where he struggled.

It was a bit over the top but he was truly terrible in 21/22 and still fairly poor in 22/23. That was mostly his fault, not his teammates. The mistakes were happening no matter who his central defensive partner was (it was Lindelof only about half the time). In saying that his combination with De Gea did seem to be a contributing factor as neither seemed to know what the other was doing, but that's on both of them.

Other way of looking at it is - our fate was still undecided when Mainoo scored, because it was still going to Penalties. Maguires goal was a winner so of course it got a bigger reaction.

A winning goal getting the most applause. Imagine that...

Maybe it's harsh, but for me, he's been poor from a defensive standpoint. Others have been poor, too.

Some of the praise is a-bit of fun, given he's come up with some crucial moments in the EL. But, then you have some posters who go way OTT and make out he's "our best defender" or he's had a good season. I just can't subscribe to that at all.

I think he's been ok, but I think De Ligt has been better from a defending standpoint, and I think we lost a lot once De Ligt got injured. All that being said, I have a huge amount of respect for Maguire, given what he's come back from. I think one more year will do and then it'll be best for all if he finds a new team.
