It was bound to happen (a link, that is).

If Ugarte leaves then we are down to one central midfielder. We need three more. If Hackney is making up a group of three central midfielders, I'm fine with it.

If we are looking to maximise our budget, this is a no-brainer. Carrick link aside he looks pretty good admittedly in the highlights reels. Championship player of the season too.

If he comes in with two high calibre midfielders as a third it’s a good option.

Is this a link?

Sounds like an opinion from a bloke at Talksport. The wording is he "could be"

He looks class at Championship level - obviously remains to be seen whether he can step up to the PL. Noting the number of reinforcements needed in midfield, he might be in the mix.

Could be another Morgan Rogers if he joins a mid-table club and kicks on. Depending on the fee, I think these players can be worth a punt. If he isn't good enough there'll be a mid-table club who'll take them at a decent fee.

With Casemiro going, Ugarte likely to be off as well, and us potentially playing 50-60 games next year, we need three midfielders. One or two of those are going to be for headline signing money, but I wouldn't mind the third being a bit of a punt like this.

I wouldn't have thought Thwaites or Fletcher would be ready for the significant minutes they'd be getting in the PL and CL if we had any kind of injury in that position otherwise.

Been banging this drum for ages and happy to take any (Talksport throw-away guesswork with no basis in fact) opportunity to do so.

Obviously he should not be our first midfield signing. In an ideal world he's not our second either (although I could see it if we blow £80m on Anderson or something like that, especially if we're also looking to spend on LB/LW). As a third CM signing he'd be exceptional. I genuinely think there's the potential to be a starter there. Sure, 'why is he still in the Championship at 24?' and all that. But he's the best player in the Championship at 24. He's been regarded as one of the best midfielders in that league for years now. He just hasn't been snapped up yet. And when Forest sign him to replace Anderson and he shines for them, we'll be pissed we didn't get him ourselves on the cheap.

Leader mentality and grabs games by the scruff of the neck too. We should be looking for that quality in every single signing now because when we lose Bruno there's going to be a massive leadership vacuum and we need the entire team to be ready to step up.

how much would he cost this summer? Middlesborough has a chance to be promoted, and I am worried if they do, they will got ton of money and will be in a position to demand a high fee for him

If we went out and signed two top quality defensive midfielders like Tchouameni and Baleba and Middlesbrough didn’t get promoted then I wouldn’t be against Hackney as back up to Mainoo as they have a lot of similar qualities.

This is it. There are plenty of good players in the Championship, and examples of players who've joined mid-table clubs and done well. Some have excelled.

Rogers cost £15 million total. Had he not worked out, they'd have got a return on him selling back to the Championship, or lower PL. You'd work on teh basis that the biggest clubs have teh most scouting resources, and if I were a top 6 PL club owner I'd be asking how we missed a player playing in this country. Especially if significant transfer fees are going on players playing in leagues which arguably aren't any better than teh top end of the Championship.

Wouldn't want him to be one of two signings, but if we'd already signed two of our central midfield targets and Hackney came in as a third option for a relatively low fee then it wouldn't really bother me.

He has done enough in the Championship to recoup a decent fee if he didn't work out as well I'd imagine, although it depends on the fee obviously. The asking price was £30m in January, but he'll only have a year left come the summer so it would potentially be lower.

Never seen him play, but I have been saying for ages that we should be getting the likes of Semenyo, Watkins, Madison, wharton etc when they're in the championship.

There will be good resale value regardless.
Signing someone with resale value isn't the way a club like United should be thinking, what they need to be doing is signing players with appropriate contracts, which TBF does seem to be how they are approaching these things these days

Semenyo was linked with Chelsea various times in his early career. I don't think he was ready for a 'big' move then: Hackney, however, is a closer approximation to what signing Wharton from Blackburn would have been ( sure., he's a couple of years older).

Utd were offered that deal at the time but INEOS had literally just taken over and weren't spending until the summer. Even then those of us who'd seen a reasonable amount of Championship games said that this was one worth pushing for . Not completely 'risk-proof' but it would have been squad-player, even lower-end squad player, money by United standards, and quite possibly saved the club 50m+ (and maybe also edged a vital game or two, including EL final, who knows, given the CM issues we've had; allowed Amorim to play Bruno up in one of the 10 roles more often; all kinds of sliding doors moments etc) .

Hackney from a non-promoted Boro for 25m or similar is absolutely a good '3rd CM' buy. Suspect the price goes up 15m+ if they get promotion.

Hackney will be a full four years older than Wharton was when he moved to the Premier League!...

Brighton heavily linked with him today. We keep saying we need to find Brighton’s midfielders before they do.

If we can get him cheap as squad depth, great. Not sure he's worth the 50m+ I'd expect them to ask for if they go up

Only really realistic if they don't come up. If they come up the fee will be larger and they will be keener to keep him.

I really like Hackney as a squad man for us, and reasonably doable in terms of the likely transfer fee of 30-35m.

Hayden Hackney just as a name sounds utterly Tottenham.

I have to admit Hayden Hackney does have a Spursy ring to it, but we’ve already broken the dam with Mason Mount and Diogo Dalot.

Stan Lee directing our transfer strategy from beyond the grave.

HH would be at home with MM. He is definitely one to get. Cutting out the middleman team we would have to pay a fortune to get him in the future. His previous ties with Carrick will give us a negotiating advantage.

We'll get a good look at him tomorrow lunchtime when they play Southampton. If he is any good, send a Hackney carriage to pick him up ;)
