I would really like to see us try this out. At the same time. They are both quick. They are both taller than the actual full backs we have. And they both need plenty of game time to continue developing. This works for Arsenal quite well, but I think with Heaven coming through the academy at Arsenal as a midfielder and Yoro having already shown in pre-season that he can play at RB, I think this is an interesting option to explore. It will raise the average height of the team, add more pace and defensive nous into the back four, and Heaven can maybe move into DM when in possession or allow Martinez to do so providing cover.

I've held the contradictory opinion that I don't think Heaven and Yoro work as a central pairing due to their lack of aerial ability, whilst also wanting us to just bite the bullet and see what they're made of, both to get them the game time needed and to allow us to field a higher line. But now, this is my latest craze. Some people on here suggesting the same as well.

Ideally, this would be a back four featuring De Ligt and Martinez, with Maguire on the bench.

--------------------------------------------Lammens
Yoro-----------------------De Ligt------------------Martinez-------------Heaven
-------------------------------Mainoo----------------Baleba/Santos
Amad----------------------------------Bruno------------------------Cunha
----------------------------------------Sesko/Mbeumo

I think this backline might even be able to facilitate playing Tielemans and Bruno in the same XI.

Who is up for this?

So on my phone it looks like you’ve got both Goro and heaven at right back.

So I think that’s an absolute awful idea and would leave us exposed on the left.

PC / Laptop users may suggest otherwise

Edit: Actually. I like my idea. Goro at right back would be some force

Is Yoro better than Dalot? I dont think so.

The four centre back thing is pure, unadulterated football terrorism. Get it in the bin.

Maybe, but I don't think we'd to the Stoke interpretation of it like Arsenal did last season.

Nah, it's gonna be Shaw and Dalot again.

Can't wait for them both to be gone.

I’ve been trying to make this a thing on here lately so I’m all in for it.

Positives:
  • They’ll gain much needed experience
  • Both athletic with good pace
  • Additional height for our poor set piece defending
  • Young so more adventurous and will try things
  • Don’t have 7-10yrs of poor decision making to get them down

Negatives:
  • None

It's a shame that Yoro is right footed. He is the one that's probably more suited to playing fullback, and if it was him against Shaw for the left I could absolutely see him being the better option. Yoro would be faster and able to get get forward and back quite a lot more, whereas on the right he doesn't really hold those same advantages over Dalot. I'd still like to see him at RB at some stage to see how he goes as he was quite impressive in some of the preseason games there, but I have less confidence that he'd be the best option.

Heaven at LB is a bit more iffy for me, as he lacks a bit of the speed that a fullback should have. Still wouldn't say no to seeing it tried though, as it's not like Shaw is providing a great deal from that side anymore.

I'd say our full backs are pretty good in the air and Yoro and Heaven aren't at this moment in time so i dont see the point.

Would prefer to see him in goal.

Most fullback can play cb but most cb cant play fullback. Just because youre fast doesnt mean you have the engine and awareness to keep going up an down. Its a completely different animal than staying near your penalty box most of the game. Also we dont speak about Phil Jones because he was practically Duncan Edwards when he was 19.

Yoro RB if it allows our LB to make the extra man in midfield like we did in some preseason game.s

My only memory of Yoro playing in a quasi-RB role was when he got absolutely destroyed by that random Southampton winger who never looked a threat in any match before or since. I’m sure he’s improved since then but I don’t get the obsession with playing players out of position. I don’t see either Yoro or Heaven really having the qualities to play as full backs.

I can certainly get behind us trying Dorgu as left back, as we purchased him as a left sided defensive player and he has qualities that can work there. Heaven particularly though needs minutes in his preferred CB position - I see no benefit in trying to make him a left back.

Wouldn’t you say, Silvestre, Brown, Heinze & O’Shea from the top of head were CBs who played a lot at FB either to give them minutes for experience or because better CB options were ahead of them?

Lots of teams do it.

Are we already at the point of the season where we’re throwing anything at the wall and seeing if it sticks?

Unless you want to go through yet another seeing the same underwhelming players trying something that’s not exactly crazy isn’t a bad thing.

Dalot is probably a better centre back than Yoro. That's before we start talking about them as right backs.

I don’t know. I wonder if we should just buy players for their natural positions and play them there. Sounds revolutionary but it just might work.

Just after 1 game, we already ready to give up on our fbs? Dalot hasn’t even start a game yet.

Put Maguire on corners and Bruno in goal while we're at it.

@Bastian; seems most don’t have our creative thinking!

Best just stick with the shite we have.

Ha. Let's give Carrick credit, he did try it out with Yoro at RB. And it looked pretty good. I think he's a pragmatic manager, I just hope he is strong enough generally to dominate that dressing room (not with view to this in particular, but generally) so that he's not concerned with keeping certain players happy. We saw both Shaw and Bruno come out after the Hull game criticising our preparation or lack thereof, Carrick will need to find a way to make sure they all know who's boss.

Anyhow, if we don't end up signing a left back I think it's only a matter of time before we start seeing the lack of balance there with a right footer. And when we see "reports" that United might deploy Baleba at left back when needed (bonkers) then surely it is theoretically plausible that Heaven might get a go there.

Maybe if we continue to concede set piece goals too.

But I appreciate the comradeship!

I’d say it’ll be tried 100% this season at some point, maybe not together as I don’t think Carrick would be that brave but certainly singularly.

No..neither of them are full backs. Heaven is doing ok at Centre Half.. some people blaming him for the goals conceded against Hull, nonsense. Hull were prepared and we were not. Heaven is a great young talent, and had a good season last year. He deserves and needs calm, experienced heads around him.

Yoro is not a settled player. You can see it, he's nervous on the ball and I worry that the shirt/club may be too much for him. I don't rate him, sorry to say.

He has 4 arms, shove him in goal instead

They might have height, but neither are particularly good in the air.
And most importantly aren't as good on the ball as you'd need to be as a full back - let alone having the capability of attacking runs.

They should only be absolute desperation options or against very particular attackers.

Disagree, Yoro was plenty good enough on the ball in preseason and got forward, Heaven played in midfield as a youngster and has good control and an eye for a pass.

Do you think Dalot is good enough on the ball? His control and passing are awful.

Do you think Shaw is capable of more than 2 attacking runs per game and NOT drilling the cross into the ankles of the first defender?

Like I said previously people who would prefer to watch these two play all season fair enough but don’t expect us to progress with them in the team.

I’d prefer to try something different, i highly doubt it’ll make much difference to the team.

we should try Anderson as left-back, Phil Jones as CDM and Mike Smalling right-back

Heaven as left back with Cunha as left winger/forward means we don’t have someone who can provide creativity in the wide area. Amad is a natural winger who likes to start his position wide and then drift inside. Cunha is a no 10 who likes to start his position more central then turn which often leaves no width when he plays on the left, hence why it would be better to have someone who can overlap if we are playing Cunha on the left.

Goro has too many arms. Would be a handball waiting to happen

I think it was Joe from Stretford Paddock who said he watched the Hull game back and said Shaw made his first forward run to overlap in the 57th minute or so and then struggled to come back to chase his man. He can't do it anymore. He also picks up yellows for fun because he's lost the pace and the energy required. Dalot on the left routinely stops attacks to play the ball back or occupy a position in midfield, if he's not doing the no look forward pass into traffic. Mazraoui has worked well there for Morocco, but Morocco are a well balanced and well organised side with a high technical level and plenty of commitment. The options for that overlapping player simply isn't there, unless that is supposed to be Dorgu. I'd take Dorgu as a left back over Shaw, but also want the Dorgu of last season back, and that was an attacking player.

All of this is moot of course if we were to buy a genuine first XI left back. But I'm starting to think we won't.

I do agree though, Cunha is not a left winger. Nor is Mbeumo a right winger. Both bought with view to being #10s in Amorim's system. At least Mbeumo can moonlight as a striker of sorts. Cunha could work very well off the striker if we didn't already have a #10. It's not an easy fix.

And both Yoro and Heaven need to play loads this season. I'd like to see it tried out.
