People on this forum are idiots.

A new manager doesn't fix everything in one week.
Don’t underestimate the amount of imbeciles on this forum

It looked like years of not training enough. This was never going to be sorted quickly. You cannot undo bad habits in a couple of weeks.
If not for De Gea we lose that game comfortably.

Imagine the score line was 3-1 against Norwich, that’s what we deserved in my opinion and the complexion then is very different.

Like I said I’m fully on board with Ralf and want his brand of football, this game was worrying for me for a number of reasons.
Im not sure the formation suits the players and I’m not sure the players suit the press. If that’s the case then this will be a very long road.

I’m just frustrated at that performance, from the players more than anything.

I don't think the lethargy was due to hard training.
Some of you are making out that our players are a bunch of 60 yr old, fat men.
These guys are athletes and can absolutely handle a little extra in training.
If training is now tougher, then the intensity/duration will be increased slowly.
No manager is foolish enough to increase training intensity/duration by huge amounts, in a short space of time.

So, why did we play badly? Because we have consistently played poorly against teams which are near the bottom of the league table, across many years (LVG, Jose, Ole and now RR).

Especially one that has such a contrasting view on how the game should be played.

I'm not sure which formation these players do suit. It has been years of random or just sign the player the media have bigged up the most signings. There has been no plan to it, so yes some of them will not suit a pressing game. It might mean either they have to adapt or be sold. Football at the top level in the PL is high energy, this lot have got used to strolling around.

Did the levels looks a little lower than what they showed against CP? Yeah I would give you that, but I don’t think that’s what caused the poorer showing today. Norwich did a nice job forcing our fullbacks to defend more, and without their width the attacking players just looked a bit lost.

Gary Neville alluded to it, so it must be true. A lot of his spoofery gets eaten up
Conversely, we have a bunch of posters who make it a point to disagree with everything he says.

Only 4 teams had run less than us this season. We've just brought in a manager that asks his players to press for 90 minutes, and is renowned for making huge demands of his players. How do you think we're going to get up to the level the manager requires? Did you think he was going to bring a bag of magic with him?
So it's all supposition then?

Not sure if OP posted this as satire. These are professional footballers being paid several thousands of dollars a week to play football per managers instructions, and you somehow make this excuse for them? Sure bruh.

It's abundantly clear that our lethargy and poor passing today was down to this. We knew it was coming. Why are so many shocked by it?
Does this apply to the games under Ole this season then?

No. Unless you think that Ralf has made zero changes to the way we train.
Seems like we played how we did under Ole. So there is more chance of it being some that has nothing to do with Rangnick

I genuinely do not understand what some people expect. It doesn't matter who you are, you can't make changes in 2 weeks. Or even 2 months. Judge Rangnick at the end of his spell here, be it in the summer or whenever. The style of play he wants is fitness intensive. It's not just about understanding what he wants, but you have to have the physical ability to see it through. And this squad certainly hasn't had any favors done to it in this regard during the past 3 years.

The performance today was dreadful and I'm not going to deny the subs were questionable, but Rangnick doesn't seem like a man to do something without reason, so I'm going to defer to his judgement for now. But the problem right now is the players. A lot of them seem to have gotten used to an easy life and it reflects in their performance.

Got me there, mate. I am admitting I do not blow smoke up my own arse and trying to claim retrospective credit like some sort of Redcafe John Terry.
I'll take your word for it :smirk:

Theres no way it was down to this. Our forwards were jogging around from minute 1, they're not THAT knackered.

I don't disagree, but i find it hard to understand why he is doing that during the busiest period of the season.

I love the implication that footballers simply choose to play well or not.

This heavy training is still no excuse for our 4 forwards to be so bad yesterday.
Their passing was atrocious at times, and losing the ball has nothing to do with heavy training.

They don't choose to play well or not but they do choose whether to press with intensity, make runs etc. rather than stroll around.

Humorous seeing how annoyed and frustrated people are that were not instantly a different team. Even tuchel who did brilliantly had his arse handed to him by West Brom 5-2 at home about 2 months in. It will take time and if we can drag wins out while improving then great

I think Ralf decided that high press makes little sense for us because we don't know how to break down opponents sitting back (no clear chances last game vs CP), so he decided to back off a bit and hit Norwich on the counter. We were better offensively but probably worse defensively so we'll be looking for something in between.

Can't understand why they were left on the pitch. Rashford, Ronaldo, and Fernandes, were not in the game yesterday.

I see the lack of attack as the squad adapting to a RR's pressing tactics, which isn't going to happen overnight.
I didn't see any pressing yesterday, in fact was total opposite to Palace game.

I barley saw any forward passes that connected either to link up attacking play.

Was a very poor performance.... wasn't sure what Ralphs tactics even were.

Statistically there was hardly any difference between yesterday and Palace in terms of pressing as such. Slight difference in how successful our applied pressure was (in regaining possession quickly, I mean, which is obviously the point of pressing in the first place) - but the number of instances where we "pressed" (per definition) is pretty much identical.

One can also add that the latter number (instances of pressing, regardless of whether it was well organized/successful or not) dramatically increased from Arsenal to Palace - which is a clear indication of a fundamental system change, as in: something that is 100% down to coaching/instructions and not about the amount of effort given by individual players).

(And even Arsenal saw a marked increase from our average number of pressing instances under Ole - I'm pretty sure we only had a single game this season prior to Ralf with a higher number of total pressure instances than our last two games, and that was the opener against Leeds - where the success rate was significantly lower than even yesterday, I might add).

This is a silly excuse. The players just haven't got Ole ball out of their system yet, that's all. It was never going to be an instant transition to heavy metal football.

I don't trust our attackers to fight and graft under any manager to be honest. Ronaldo is 36, so we can sort of give him a pass. I think Rashford just seems to have either the wrong attitude or a total lack of aggression in his game. Martial is never going to change and will be gone soon. Jury is out on Sancho and Greenwood, they are young enough to learn but will they buy into RRs methods? I'd like to see some of the fringe players get game-time if the first-team lads won't put the graft in. The likes of Amad and Elanga would surely run all day to get into the team

If not now when? It’s not like we can gain all that fitness in two or three weeks.
Then he should adapt to the squad's fitness and find a way to play with what he got, and do that when we get more days off later in the season.
If the problem is that the training is too hard, we'll lose unnecessary matches, and get more injuries. Better to wait and play with lower intensity for a while.

How about blaming the previous manager for our clear lack of fitness, despite him always promising that we will have good pre-seasons?
