120k to quite possibility sit on the bench for a year (or more if De Gea regains his form) is some way to make a living. I had it in my head he only signed a new deal a year or so ago.

Ole clearly views him as the future, so it's good to see a long term commitment

Good news. Crazy wages though unless we plan to sell De Gea next summer.

I wonder if it was true that he was Chelsea’s number 1 GK target.

We would have surely needed to promise him plenty of playing time to stop that

Weird to have 2 keepers on a combined wage of 400k+. That’s poor upper management.

Good news. Romero probably leaving now, where to though? Leeds, Chelsea?

Amazing term, but a BIG wow to Henderson duking it out for the #1 spot this season already, I was sure he'd go on loan.

Ole isn't messing around, De Gea is one of the the all time MUFC goalkeeper greats. Looks like Romero will be leaving in loan at the very least if Henderson plans on spending the season here.

Reminds me of when Courtois came back from loan and Cech got benched. Wonder if this is the beginning of the end for de Gea?

I still think it's very possible that De Gea wakes up and holds onto the job for another five years. I just don't buy that such an incredible keeper is a lost cause

6 years wow, that’s a massive contract! Shows a lot of faith in the lad but also it shows he has faith in us that his time will come.

Then again, I saw 6 years and thought I hope that isn’t going to be a cursed number for us ala David Moyes.

That must be the biggest wage ever given to a homegrown player without ever starting a senior game aswell.

Would be a bit awkward now if he is shit for you.

While Chelsea fill their boots with Chilwell now signed, we do what? Get Henderson, who is not first choice and certainly wasn't second choice in the past two seasons on a six-year deal. So strengthening in the one area of the pitch, you could argue, which is the last that needs strengthening. I say strengthening, because he hasn't been in our squad, having been out on loan.

Of course, what Sky DON'T say is that will undoubtedly mean losing Argentina international Sergio Romero, who we will let go for money. If not.. what the heck is going on? Personally, I would have dropped De Gea during last season, and played Romero because of his poor form. Romero is a top keeper. Best number 2 in the world, surely. But for some reason (wages) the Spaniard appears untouchable. If it had been Matic on poor form, or Fred, or Greenwood, then he would have been rested.

Sky Sports reporting they felt De Gea was not under enough pressure. What guff. What is Romero, if not pressure.

If Woodward thinks Henderson deal is pulling the wool over anyone's eyes. He is totally wrong. Our transfer dealings are again, a farce.

Just like a new signing. And once Pogba also signs, we are done for the summer.

It will be interesting to see how De Gea reacts to this. Will knowing the future is on his heels cut out the errors or will he crumble under the pressure?

The last area on the pitch that needs strengthening... despite costing us 15-20 points last season. Strengthened I might add, by tying down the future of a highly talented young academy prospect who is United through and through.

Quite the achievement to make this a negative thing.

Big statement. Can only be a positive on the training ground. First genuine challenge for De Gea's starting spot since his first season with us. He'll up his game or he's out. Can't beat a ferociously ambitious youngster for focusing the mind.

If Henderson does end up as our starting keeper £120k a week doesn't actually seem that bad, he won't get a renewal anytime soon after signing a new contract as well.

The contract protects his market value, he's someone who wouldn't be short of suitors for should we decide to sell him further down the line.

Goalkeeper is obviously a position that needs strengthening with De Gea's erratic form over the last 2 years. It's not even remotely arguable that it's the last area of the pitch that needs strengthening.

A kick up De Geas arse is what he needs. Either he sorts himself out or we have Deano in net. Win win.

It’s great when a homegrown lad signs for your club on a long term deal, especially when they’ve looked as good as he has during his time at SU but to have one keeper on 120k and the other on 250k+ should be a concern. It’s not like another position where they can be used as cover somewhere else. It’s GK or bench. I imagine De Gea will be on his way out next year now but it’s poor management to have that predicament this season.

Must be heavily appearance based. 1st choice GKs are rarely rotated, so its a win-win stipulation for someone who believe he can be the starter and the club.

If this leads to De Gea becoming his old self then what's the harm.

The financial outlay for DDG and Henderson is a bit high, but it's not poor planning. Those are two different things.

United are bridging a major transition and giving themselves a legit opportunity for cover in the GK area. Romero's deal is up in June 2021, so he's gone regardless if it's now or next season.

This is playing out exactly how I saw it, but it's been moved up one year. Henderson has been loyal to the club and United have looked after his growth. There is a huge narrative for United to groom their homegrown number 1, who is also the number 1 for England. Huge narrative, regardless of how average England's GK is with Pickford and Pope.

DDG will have to accept his first real challenge and understand the future is now and he's gonna have to step up. If Henderson's presence sharpens DDG, then that's great too. They will rotate at worst, but it's evident that Henderson's guaranteed contractual years 5 years, out runs DDG's contract.

Because both have different goalkeeping styles, the defensive backline will have to adjust to both players whenever they play...moreso Henderson than DDG, but it's still a change that will require time and experience playing with DDG then Henderson.

Let us not forget that at the end of July, Nemanja Matic, aged 32, signed a new three-year contract with us. That keeps him on our bench till the grand old age of 35.

And in June, last year, Juan Mata, then aged 31, signed a two year contract with an option to stay for another year - taking him to the grand age of 34. On the bench.

Puzzling as ever.

i keep saying players out to get sancho; DH long term no place for Romero. DDG perhaps looking expensive..
