A CEO got shot and killed in New York. Looks like he was specifically targeted. Curious what the motive is. Suspect still at large.

UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed in midtown Manhattan Wednesday morning in a “brazen, targeted attack” as he walked toward the company’s annual investor conference, NYPD commissioner Jessica Tisch announced. The gunman remains on the loose.

“Many people passed the suspect, but he appeared to wait for his intended target,” she said. “I want to be clear: At this time, every indication is that this was a premeditated, preplanned, targeted attack.”
Thompson was named chief executive officer for UnitedHealthcare in April 2021. UnitedHealthcare is part of UnitedHealth Group, America’s largest insurance company and one of the country’s biggest companies, period: UnitedHealth Group is the fourth-largest company in America as ranked by revenue, according to the annual Fortune 500 list.

Probably a family member of someone denied an insurance payout for care

Probably done as warning to other people. Just a reminder of how easy anyone can get killed.

It's literally so easy and cheap to hire a sicario (or a professional team of assassins if you have more money).

How do you know this  ?

That's crazy.

Apparently it seems likely that it wasn't a case that he hadn't tested it, it was just that kind of suppressor means you manually have to draw the gun back each time (no idea the technical term). I saw the video on twitter, it's not gory but it's quite brutal in regards to how ruthless it is.

Edit: just clicked that tweet and seen it's in relation to that exact video

Also looks like he's catching the spent casings?

I saw on Reddit a while ago in one of those “what do the movies get wrong” type of threads that compressor/silencers have nothing to do with stealth in the real world as it’s still an easily audible and easily recognisable gun shot sound.

Their predominant use case is to protect the ears of the person dispensing the shot.

You just ruined Metal Gear Solid for me.

It's always fascinating to me to think what must be going through someone s mind when they re about to do something that doesn't just change other people's lives for the worse - but also finished the life they had as they know it. I know we all have our anger and irrational thoughts at times but at some point and with some people that subliminal voice we have that tells us not to do something - doesn't work.

Absolute worst health insurance company I have ever dealt with as a care provider, they have their work cut out for them just to narrow down the suspect list.

Guy killed is responsible for a lot of deaths as well. Even tried to feck up the NHS. Anything to maximize the profits for the shareholders. That includes influencing lawmakers to keep the healthcare system as it is in the US.

This murder just reminds us how rare non-gang related premeditated murders are because frankly I'm surprised that more individuals like this aren't murdered with how casually people use guns over there.

The list of controversies from this CEO led $500 billion profit company is seemingly endless.

You think this person was killed randomly to remind other people that anyone can be killed? That's a bit of a reach. Seems much more likely that he was targeted for a specific purpose.

This isn't to suggest this guy deserved to be killed, but there are a whole lot of people who may have felt bitterness towards him. Also as someone who used to work in this industry, I can say with the utmost confidence that UHC as a whole has done more than any company in history to make the US healthcare system a fecking hellscape so there's that.

Wouldn't be surprised if this makes things worse in the short term as well as all these companies start splurging on security details instead of, you know, the tiniest modicum of introspection.

Only played a demo on PS2.

Regarding MGS, I probably played it right through with the tranquillizer gun to not kill anyone.
You're missing out.
Silenced gun is unnecessary. I’ve had plenty of success choking others from behind or judo chopping them unconscious then tossing them into crates, freezers, or off a cliff.
Very true. The piano wire is my go-to. Up close and personal.

Anyway, no need to derail the thread any further.

Kinda crazy. I already thought BCBS was evil but this has them looking pretty good

BCBS varies hugely by state. Some of their coverage in more populous states is quite good so that skews their average very significantly - more so than any other provider on this list.

Very interesting to see (from an admittedly cursory look) the complete lack of sympathy for the CEO online from even people on the 'right' or MAGA. and it seems there were even Republicans that set themselves against the company the CEO was linked to. Needless to say anyone who has had problems dealing with health insurance are dancing up a jig on the grave.

I of course have no opinion on the matter.

It's wild that he didn't have a corporate security detail as the CEO of one of the largest ( by market cap) and most evil corporations in the world. Lots of companies and organizations have internal security teams that do OSINT, threat assessments, threat monitoring, and provide security for executives. Then again, I think major corporate executives feel so far removed from the outside world (and any negative consequences for their actions) that they couldn't see anything happening.

It's possible the assassin never made any threats and kept his plans to himself, but some bodyguards would likely have at least slowed him down.

Given the amount of social murder United HealthCare gets away with, of course there won't be much sympathy for him.

Having watched the clip, it looks pretty professional. Calmy steps out, aims his shots, doesn't panic, and leaves the scene without much fuss. Doesn't look like some random disgruntled customer.

By extension, it could be.

Someone like this has a place in hell waiting for them, if such a thing exists, so working out who would want them dead is an exercise in futility.

This'll be a Netflix documentary soon enough.

Should I feel guilty for silently hoping they don't find the shooter?

The fact his wife is giving interviews about his murder the day he died somehow tells me he didn't treat his nearest any better than your average customer.

Dunno how people accept such system as normal, nevermind the timing of it

Yup. Everyone I've heard about United is they are the worst of the already awful list of healthcare companies. I agree with the people who are surprised this doesn't happen more often. I'm not surprised there will be zero sympathy for this.

Twitter's having a field day with this. Shame the site's a shell of what it used to be, could've been one of those landmark days on it.

Can confirm. I fired a .223 calibre hunting rifle with a very large suppressor, and it was still loud as feck, even with earmuffs on.

The whole Hollywood idea of suppressors turning a rifle shot into a soft little 'clunk' is bullshit.
