Darren Fletcher should be starting in that line up (instead of Butt).

The man made it into the PFA team of the year (09/10) ahead of the likes of Scholes, Gerrard, Fabregas etc - Butt never reached those levels.

Fletcher is far too forgotten by our fanbase - a terrific player who, if not for a life altering chronic illness, would have had the better career overall than Carrick

Even if you disagree with Fletcher > Carrick, which is fair enough, you surely have to admit that Fletcher should be in this squad
I’m a big fan of fletcher actually, I just stupidly forgot about him! Though I was also a fan of butt. Oooer

I would pick Butt over Fletcher but Sheasy over Duxbury and definitely Evans over Graeme Hogg.

For one reason or another we have never been prolific with producing keepers.

Gaskell, Rimmer, Walsh, Bosnich is about it.

Certainly we never saw the best of him but on his day Bosnich was an excellent keeper.
Tom Heaton?

Not sure what you think generally about players who barely played for us but have gone on to do well elsewhere. You have Pique in there though.

Difference is Pique played first for us and Tom Heaton didn't.

If you went for players that came through our system but didn't play first team then...

1. Heaton
2. Cathcart
3. Mansell
4. McShane
5. Tate
6. Drinkwater
7. Savage
8. McLoughlin
9. Baartz
10. Platt
11. O'Sullivan

Subs; David Johnson, Colin Murdock, R-R Zieler, Matty James, Oliver Norwood, Tommy Spratt, Harry McDonald, Eric Bell, Paddy Sloan, Jon Macken, Hugh Curran

Whole bunch of internationals in there too...

Some good subs in: Atkinson, Dyer, Osman, Scowcroft, Wright...
Tried to squeeze Osman in to a back 3 but it just seemed wrong, amazing thing about that team is how many played together, add a couple of dutchmen and you could nearly win a title....

An amazing about of attacking forwards...only one keeper who made more than 10 apps and virtually no central defenders.

Ok with fullbacks and forwards...weak everywhere else.
A team with Bale, Le Tissier and Shearer would be monstrous.

They'd destroy most of the league week in, week out.

I remember that team from early 80'es with Mühren, Thijsen, and Mariner too. A great team!

I tried making one for Atlético:

David de Gea
Juan Carlos Aguilera - Jesús Martínez Jayo - Roberto Solozábal - Lucas Hernández
Koke - Gabi - Saúl Ñíguez
Paco Campos - Joaquin Peiró - Fernando Torres

Although Eriksen hadn't played for Odense Boldklub's first team Ajax paid a transfer fee of £1m for him, so technically he's not home-grown
Ah I see. I was just confused because some others on the list were older when they joined us and spent less time in our youth teams but that's fair enough.

Quite some talent they had in this generation alone.
It's sad that they haven't had their house in order this decade with some horrible managerial appointments, otherwise they could've been much more competitive domestically. Even amongst those players you feel that players like Howedes, who has won a World Cup, Draxler, currently at one of the biggest clubs in Europe, and Meyer have not fulfilled their potential. They have looked more stable this season but, especially with a young manager, they can have another inconsistent season and see their current crop not develop as well (Meyer, Kehrer).

I was critical of Sane when he left for City, thinking he left far too early, but clearly he made the right choice. He left an inconsistent club which had already slowed the development of young players before him and went to one of the biggest clubs with a manager who has trust in him.

I thought the same. It's not like he was established 'player of the year' material, he went as a hopeful talent. Luckily (also for our national team, I hope) it turned out really well so far.

What would be the best starting 11 of academy players currently playing? That’s an interesting one.

Ours would probably look like this...

Heaton
Simpson Pique Evans Brady
Fletcher Drinkwater Pogba
Lingard
Rashford King

I’m probably missing some obvious ones. You could throw Shawcross, James and Fosu Mensah in there aswell.

Welbeck and Januzaj would probably get in there. I’d easily have Pique and Evans over Keane though.

By the definition in the OP the likes of Buljan, Bokšić, Jarni & Srna all miss out for joining the club as 17-year-olds and going straight into the first team afaik.

Being maybe slightly lenient with the rules (the same way Fosu-Mensah would be fore United), Ajax current home grown by current ability would be about:

Vermeer
Tete Alderweireld Vermaelen Vertonghen
Blind
Klaassen Eriksen
El Ghazi Babel Emanuelson

Tete, Van der Wiel, Bazoer, Anita, Kishna?

Left out current Ajax players, because I think it's too early to throw talents on there. Think the team shows how well we've done at producing centre backs, but the lack of creative and attacking talent in the mid to late 2000s

If I were to include current Ajax players, I'd add De Ligt, Kluivert, and Van de Beek, but vd Beek on the bench. Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Vermaelen, Blind, De Ligt is probably the best defensive crop you'll find in this version of the game.
