Television House of the Dragon (GoT Prequel) - No book spoilers allowed

I don’t want to spoil this show for anyone but at the end, bran the broken is king

I've genuinely been thinking for the past few weeks, I want to make a thread to find out whats actually, genuinely liked on redcafe.
Or, you know, there are dozens of people watching dozens of shows, and different people have different opinions - or do you need everyone to like what you like also?
Almost every actor is bad, almost every script is poorly written, almost every plot, badly paced, all by people, most of whom do not write, do not storyboard, and do not act.

I'm not saying you have to be an artist to appreciate art, but if you're not careful, you just become a critic who can't enjoy anything.
That's a rather idiotic way of looking at it. It's pretty easy just with exposure to a lot of TV and cinema to recognize good writing, acting, directing, cinematography, scoring...
Every single episode of this season has had some genuinely incredible acting
Of this season of what show?

Nah, i think it needs them. There's too much change elsewhere, they give a bit of consistency or a base line to come back to while those around them come and go. Matt Smith helps but he's usually off doing his own thing rather than dealing with politics.
The reason there's too much change elsewhere is because they keep inserting these three characters into the same repetitive unnecessary bullshit. If they instead spent that time on other characters maybe they would actually get some development instead of just randomly having them do shit out of nowhere. You might actually get some consistent characterisation and character development.

Pretty much this. All this “you don’t enjoy anything” and “it’s just cool to shit on GoT” miss the mark. The show is just average, and that’s ok. A lot of people (myself included) continue to watch because of the production value and general interest in the universe.
Yeah, I do enjoy watching it, I like the lore and the world a lot, but it's not exactly flawless television.

Everything this universe did after the first 4 seasons of GoT just has the burden of that being amazing.

True, but it has also been shown that it's still possible to produce very good content in the universe that can stand on its own. 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' was very good, and I thought the same of the first season of HotD. It had much better character arcs and the intrigue felt a lot closer to early season GoT. It was only really in the second season of HotD, where it started to meander and become incoherent.

Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was class. They absolutely can still do good things in this universe, you just need to have a competent team behind it.

Not at all and it wasn't that deep. Think you've read that completely wrong.

Disagree with that also. Fancasting has become a such a thing simply because people care more about what a fictional character looks like, rather than actual acting ability, for example. So much criticism I see of movies and TV shows is "I would have done this," where there isn't actually anything wrong with the piece of media, it's just not the direction you yourself would have gone in. That doesn't make it inherently bad, or how you would have done it any better.

I am eager to read the manuscripts of several posters in this thread, clearly some future golden globes winners

I do hope Gwayne survives the whole thing, he's a very good character. Hot too.

Yeah they done really well with that. I think you do need humour in there, which has always been lacking in HOTD. In GOT you had Tyrion, bronn and the hound all regularly bringing some laughs.

Siskel and Ebert famously won many Oscars with their screenplays.

I don’t understand how you can navigate any kind of media with your mindset. Have you never criticised a book, show, movie, game, song? Have they all been excellent because you yourself have never won any literary awards, baftas, Grammy awards etc? Can you not tolerate any criticism, however mild, of something you like?

Don’t presume I haven’t won a literary award please.

Ormund and Daeron are in Tumbleton, not Oldtown. They’ve mixed their army with the general population, and Rhaenyra doesn’t want to kill innocents. At least that’s the explanation given. She tried with an the assassination plot instead, but it failed.

But yeah, she has like 6-7 dragons of various sizes. The Greens have two I think - Vhagar and Daeron’s.
Helaena's dragon too but she's not a combatant.

Yes true, absolutely loved that.

Great episode.

I’ll give deeper response after you’ve all seen it

Just gonna do spoiler thing

so utterly stupid to not treat Ulf and the other lad as more like family. Terrible leadership and a lack of humanity along with politics. Old town was going to be left open, i could see why other houses would be upset they wouldn’t get it but couldn’t they have figured out something?

I thought we’d get the big battle this episode, but only 8 episodes and the odd context of the previous season probably nixed that. Sea battles like in E1 are also apparently somewhat expensive.

Helaena does see a future with her chickens and children , but she also sees a grey mare like from the 4 horses of the apocalypse and an eclipse which probably isn’t great.

Can't say Rhaenerya doesn't deserve whatever it is she's about to get.

First season of everything is mostly great. It only becomes shit season 3 onwards

They do have awful leadership, no diplomacy or finesse in anything they do. Given she was trained at an early age she had learnt nothing. It's all just ego ultimately which is why she'll presumably fail I guess.

It's weird given she knows about the prophecy (I think I remember she knows?) why didn't she ask beautiful, lovely Helaena. I thought that was her whole ambition and drive of being on the throne, to guard the realm from this impeding doom. I guess that's changed.

I do like Aegon, can't deny he's got balls.

I just realised but the opening title sequence, is that meant to be Helaena's cross stitch so ultimately her visions? I've always just ignored it and gone to get a drink.
