How long until Ole issues a message we won't be spending in January?

It's getting close to that time of year when our manager will be wheeled out to trot out the edict from Woodward to say they might spend money in the window but won't unless the right player is available? It's pretty clear our squad is paper-thin, especially in midfield, and unless management has been lying to us they should have identified long-term targets who would improve the club, if we don't sign anyone in January I would be worried about even finishing in the top half of the table.

Already been said hasn’t it?

Sure there was something like ‘transfers are tough in January we might look into the loan market’

Emre Can on loan with a view to a permanent move in the summer will probably be about as good as it will get.

As we get closer there will be more and more "leaks" about how we will only sign the right targets. It's started already. But the rumours will pop back up early January to get fans engaged. I would say just before the Liverpool game Ole will officially say none of our targets are available and he's happy with the squad.

Probably after the next time we get a couple of wins in a row. Feel good factor will be high and Woodward will be back on his high horse. The gullible fanbase will agree with him and they'll be telling us how signing new players in January would be disruptive for the likes of McT, Martial, James, Greenwood etc.

The winter window is notoriously hard to get exactly the players you want especially if their clubs are going well and in with a shout for silverware. Players like Sancho, Haaland etc won't be going anywhere in January. Emre Can might be an option but otherwise you are looking for other fringe players who aren't getting a game or players from clubs who are financially strapped. At the moment I find it hard to believe any top class player or prospect will look at United and say "That's a situation I want to buy into". We are offering little more than big wages at the moment.

I'd be very surprised if we did. Every year this happens and people act like a quiet January is some sort of anomaly. We've had very little activity or successful activity since the January window became a thing very simply due to clubs not wanting to lose good players mid season. If we do, great, if not getting players fit again is crucial

It is not the best or ideal time to get new players, but this is when the scouting should come to the fore. We bought a couple of Man Utd GOAT's in Jan 2006 in the form of Vidic & Evra plus players who may have done a fair job for Utd in Saha & Mata. But the priority of the Glazer's/ Woodward are the numbers on the financial spreadsheet, not the numbers(or lack of) on the field I cannot see the lack of quality of the field being resolved in the short of medium term future.

We won't be signing anyone, very few teams do, it was a smokescreen to deflect attention from poor results and performances. If we win our next two games (Astana and Villa), Ole will categorically say 'no signings'. If we drop points in these next two, the rumours will start again to distract us.

Understandable that none of our big expensive targets are available but if we can't find a decent midfielder for January then what is the point in having a scouting department.
I'm supposed to believe that there isn't a Hernandez type- cheap gamble or a reasonably priced young player with a potential sell on fee incase it doesn't work out? Not every signing has to be a superstar. Nothing wrong with a Shaqiri type singing here or there.

Real Madrid have a stacked squad so we might try to loan someone from them. Isco, James, Bale, Lucas might all be possible to get.

Nothing much ever happens in January, and this is why our recruitment department needed to get their finger out and get business completed over the Summer.
But we all know how that went, dithering and fannying about, just 3 signings made over the whole of the Summer.
This is why I'm surprised that so many people expected a flurry of incoming transfers in January.

Yeah, basically.

But this whole thing, from a fan perspective (an Internet fan perspective, I should perhaps add) is predicated on the idea that we're horribly shite at the moment and desperately need to add quality to the squad. Which we do, one way or the other, if we aim to get back on top. But when we need to do it is another matter entirely: the crux of the matter is, as I keep saying, what Ole's remit is.

If he's supposed to finish in the top four, it would seem to be a matter of some urgency to bring in reinforcements in several positions.

If he isn't - then, well, there you go. Not bringing in players who aren't ideal from a long-term perspective makes perfect sense. Target the right players and don't do deals if the player ain't...right.

He said in the summer he was happy with the squad, that top 4 was priority and that January buys were unlikely. Don't think he's going to change his mind unless there is any truth to the Pogba rumours (unlikely)

Spiral of doom, no top 4 no good player, no good player no top 4.

I really find it hard to find good players that ticks the boxes (Not old, quality, available for transfer without being extorted, reasonable wages) in January. Clubs don't have to sell, and it's really not a good time to move around. I'd imagine good players like Sancho would want a summer of well planned moved rather than an abrupt January moves even if he wants to come here, and that's a big IF that's looking increasingly unlikely.

Possibly - sure.

But everyone and his granny knows that you can't just walk into the top four in England at the moment. It's a matter of margins and momentum for all but two teams, really. Would no CL exposure be an absolute deal breaker for the target in question? Not so sure about that, to be honest. I would think it depends more on a) how the "project" is sold and b) money.

And you may reverse a) and b) in terms of how important it would be to the player in question.

If he won't be able to spend in January, then I don't know what was the reason to appoint him in the first place.

Yes I have read it as well. We are crying out for a midfielder and attacker as a minimum and you watch we wont sign anybody as ole will be happy what we got for a mid table club

Then why did they sign Harry Maguire?

we spent more money on Harry then a lot of teams did over all.
They want to sign truly proven or promising young talent. They are looking for a young midfielder and right winger, believe it or not. Spending huge in January wouldn’t make any sense unless it’s for a very proven midfielder who can switch with Mctominay if need be once we sign another attacking midfielder.
What’s the news on Fernandes? Has he held up his form

I don't care if they are loan deals or not. We need 2/3 players in January, else we will be lucky to finish in top 10.

Pretty sure he has said this that we might go on loan and it even posted in the transfer forum as well and also posted in United’s official site. He also said that we will buy players but the players is what we exactly what we wanted to sign in the summer, well clearly majority those players won’t be available in January.

Anyway, you can blame the board whatever you want or blame Ole for not being honest. Honestly I would rather the manager just get on with it, don’t moan in public and if there is something he has issue or moan about with the board just keep it behind the scene which seems at least what he’s doing at the moment. Making it public will not making it better, I meant Jose moaning last time publicly wasn’t working. It might work with the club who has Arab money.

Yeah, I said 'very few' not 'no teams'.

We aren't signing anyone in my opinion, it's predictable nonsense that we see in the media whenever we're being slated for our on-field performances and results. Deflect, distract, deflect, distract.

By Christmas the DOF stuff will start again and the Sancho rumours, season ticket renewals will be upon us soon.

Would really like just to sign some players in January. Doesn't look like we will be getting any permanent deals which annoys me. But if this happens we desperately need at least a striker and midfielder on loan and then have targets, think we need 5 but that's being extremely optimistic, lined up and ready to sign permanently in the summer.

Will it be the same in the summer "difficult to "get targets due to European Championships
This is something which I dread happening. It took Woodward too long to sign players last summer when he had plenty of time. This summer he has a convenient excuse to take his time due to the Euros.

I think it's going to be a case of Woodward promising to get "x" players then saying he couldn't get them due to the Euros when he had no intention of getting some of them anyway and use it is as a ploy to make some fans happy before he lets us down big time.

Spot on.

There is always talk about spending in January and usually nothing happens. Considering all the injuries though and how piss poor our current midfield options are we really, really should be signing a midfielder, preferably two. If we by some miracle manage to offload Sanchez Link, we should lighten the wage bill quite a bit and considering we only spent 80 million net this summer there should be some money left (hopefully)

Before the summer he talked about wanting 6 players but it wasn't realistic iirc. He then has the choice of doing a Mourinho and say we're fecked before the season even starts or try to boost the morale of the squad by saying he is happy with it. Easy choice in my opinion.
