I really thought James Wilson and Nick Powell would make it at a high level

There was an African lad at spurs under redknapp. Think he may have had him at portsmouth too. It was well known that he disliked football too. He did a few interviews on it
Think there was something about Batistuta not liking football? Enjoyed playing well enough, but nothing else.

Just going to make this post, and leave, he was the most dissappointing player in the history of football.

Would have been one of the all time greats.

Pascal chimbonda also if i remember correctly and possibly mido were both known to not particularly like football but were good enough to have a good prem career

Wilson I never quite got the hype. But I gotta say I was one of the few people excited by the Powell project. One of my favourite moments was when LVG brought on Powell randomly while we were chasing a goal in the CL because he had a reputation for scoring bangers. He must have scored some absolute blinders in practice that week.

I remember John Curtis. He played centre back with Rio in an England youth game, and together they were outstanding. Curtis had an innate positional sense and ability to make clean tackles when he was nowhere favourite to win the ball. I think he played once for the 1st team at right back, against Arsenal, was torn a new a***hole, never to be seen ever again. The reason why I am on here and not coaching a Premiership team, and everyone on here really, is we cannot see what goes in in training, etc

Angel Gomes, honestly felt there was hype about him for 10 years. He'll have a decent career but he was one of the best players in an England side that had Foden, Guehi, Morgan Gibbs White, Connor Gallagher, Sancho, Hudson Odoi, Smith Rowe etc.

Shola Shoretire and Callum Gribbon were other ones that had very early hype. Fosu-Mensah was billed to be an unheard of freakish defender.

Back in the day, I was wholly convinced that Rafael, Fabio and Jonny Evans were going to be 3/4 of our backline for at least a decade. The fact that we brought Evans back... imagine how much time and money we wouldve saved just keeping him around. Same applies with Smalling really. Fosu-Mensah was another I rated.

More recently, I was sure that Charlie McNeill, Hansen-Aaroen and Willy Kambwala would be good PL level players.

Evans I never really rated. People forget he spent a good few years at West Brom battling relegation and even when they went down it was only Leicester who were interested in him.

There's a bit of revisionism around him now because he did well for a player we expected nothing from. But he was genuinely just average and mostly very poor in the years before we got rid of him, and the 8 years he spent elsewhere never convinced anyone other top club to sign him even as a backup.
