This is selective targeting of India by the US. When Israel passed their nation-state law, there was no threat of sanctions. When our democraticaly elected govt gets this bill passed through a single chamber of parliament (still to get the Rajya Sabha vote and president's signature) with a massive majority and multiple parties in favour, the sole superpower picks on a soft target.
Note that secularism is still part of the unchangeable basic structure of our constitution. All this law does is grant citizenship to certain refugees fleeing religious persecution in neighbouring countries. OTOH, the nation-state bill reaffirmed the religious character of the Israeli state.

Onion robbery is now a major criminal offence :)

It was mostly Patel who was the driver behind the partition bill...which is ironic considering how BJP like him over Nehru.
A part of me wonders how this kind of stuff happens in countries so large. Look at India, it's HUGE and has several different kinds of climates in it. Surely it should be able to grow enough onions. Similarly Tomatoes are so easy to grow, Pakistan, despite being smaller than India is still a massive country with several different climates - all of which you could grow tomatoes in, yet there is a shortage!

idk about Indian onions, but Pakistani tomatoes have been a political football for years. I remember during the days of the dictator Pervez Musharraf, there was a tomato shortage and he was telling people to learn to cook without them!

I just heard the foreign affairs committee statement on tv, hadn't read it first time.
i'm actually angry - the feckers running the govt of the country which did a muslim ban - upheld by their courts! - have the gall to criticise us.

I know. I'd like to see how BJP placates them while showing that they're still sticking up for a Hindu rashtra.
electorally i think they can afford to lose those seats (~25 total seats in NE, of which ~8 are exempt from CAB). CAB protects the bigger prize of Bengal (42 seats).
i'm sure the whole point of this exercise (nrc + cab) is to create uncertainty and fear among muslims. (if there was no cab, that fear might spread to non-muslims too). the nrc is supposed to be done by 2024, that is the date for the next election, and that cannot be a coincidence. beyond the fear, maybe modi wants a few camps to be active and full of muslims as the backdrop to his re-election campaign. something like this. (apart from the ram temple at the babri site of course).

India's new visa penalty discriminates on religious lines, say Bangladesh officials

FRRO rules
The FRRO rules, posted on its website, noted that the “penalty of overstay” for “minority communities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan” is ₹500 for more than two years, ₹200 for 91 days to two years and ₹100 for up to 90 days.
On the other hand, if the person who overstayed does not belong to minority community, then the charges are in dollars — $500 (₹35,000), $400 (₹28,000) and $300 (₹21,000) — for the same duration of overstay.
“This means if Liton Das (a Bangladeshi cricketer, a Hindu) overstays for a day, then he will have to pay ₹100, whereas if the person’s name is Saif Hasan, he will have to pay over ₹21,000, which is what Mr. Hasan paid,” a senior Bangladeshi official told The Hindu.

Managing protests is one thing but whats more worrying is how easily internet is switched off for an entire state without any due process.
Let us thank the SC for ignoring the Kerala HC on this.

Speaking of the SC, any chance this sham bill gets struck down? Legal opinion seems pretty divided from what I read.
Law is pretty clear on such things. But then again the law like facts are irrelevant. Check the post on the top of the page.

video evidence of murderers boasting literally doesnt matter
Control room DGP provided audio recordings. These were deemed unreliable because they were copies on a CD :houllier:

Another DGP's claims were discarded because he was deemed to be a disgruntled officer :lol:

I frankly don't see any non Muslims suffering from this.
In the north east it's all about locals vs outsiders (Bengali), the tensions have nothing to do with religion in that part of the world. The fear is that the massacres will start again against bengalis.

Edit: did you watch the whole video Edgar? Gibe a watch mate becasue the guy explains the situation very well, most north-easters and bengalis will agree I'm sure.

ULFA might just resurrect itself now. Back to the days of militancy.

We should just tear up our constitution and write a new one. The first line should say that India is a Hindu nation.

I'm feeling ashamed by this bill.
Don't think Pakistanis are ashamed for the past 70+years to be called as Islamic nation. UK too doesn't feel ashamed to be calling themselves as a Christian nation. Peculiarly some holier than though Indians feel ashamed in calling India a Hindu nation.

If any Muslim country reduce the years to attain citizenship to Muslim refugees by half, will they be called fascist country?

Because it is not?

This is the preamble to the Indian Constitution
We, the people of India, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all of its citizens:
  • JUSTICE social, economic and political;
  • LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;
  • EQUALITY of status and of opportunity;and to promote among them all;
  • FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the nation;
  • In our Constituent Assembly, this 26th day of November, 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION.
Which is why the poster you replied to said that we should tear our constitution and declare India as a Hindu nation.
