Not this again!

Net spend only matters from a purely financial point of view. If you have spent £400M on players, whether you got that money from player sales, revenue generation or your sugar daddy, you've still spent £400M on players.
So it matters only who you buy not who you sale/lose? How does net spend not matter if it's a reflection of what is going in AND out?

Yeah it a strange notion that it doesnt matter apparently. Netspends gives a pretty good picture of whether not the spending improves the team or not.

If you sell a 100 million player and bring in an equally good player as replacement for 100 million. You've spent 100 million, but you have not improved the squad. So it actually matters. City or PSG would not be able to ascend with having negative netspend or small netspend, because their squad would most likely not improve.

Well I sort of agree. We sold Ronaldo for £80m and signed Valencia for £17m. You couldn't say Ferguson did a poor job in 2009-10 because "having spent £17m on one player the team should have improved over 2008-09, not decline".

It’s a reflection of Barcelona’s idiocy. Coutinho was a £100m plus player so why should it reflect well upon the football team? No shit they’ve improved after spending £200m on players.

This is really really silly:

So if Man Utd buy Zinchenko from City for 50m and City buy him back for 50m.

Then next season the same thing happens:

Man Utd and City have both invested 100m into their squad and improved their squad with 100m of purchases?

It's ridiculous notion.

Net spend and Expected goals have to be the worst things I read in football media nowadays. They're the safe escape way from anything.

What the hell are you on about?

If Liverpool sell Coutinho for £140M and buy VVD for £75M and Alisson for £70M, net spend £5M, but they have still brought £145M of players. What are the two new players worth, £5M? No, £145M!

wtf is so difficult to understand?

Generally if you sell a player, because you have an offer you can't refuse and spend all the money on a either a replacement or to strengthen other areas, you have still spent the money.

You lot seem to think a team sells a £100M player and buys 100 £1M players to replace them, it doesn't work like that. Obviously Spurs bucked the trend by selling Bale and buying £100M worth of crap.

As deluded as 95% of the United fans at caf. It's the posters of the other clubs who contribute to the thoughtful and enjoyable posts here.:wenger:
Why you here then? If supposedly 95% of us talk out of our arse? Would you visit a porn website that has 95% shit material?

You cannot be judged by something that doesn't exist.

- Look, your team has spent a lot last few years and ..
- Net spend, lad, net spend! We have sold a player for 200m 10 years ago and we're still spending the money. Now shut up please.

Of course net spend matters. I've not yet heard a convincing argument as to why value outflows from a club should be discounted.
Yup, it's quite frankly bizarre that some people insist it doesn't.

We sell our entire squad for £1bn and then spend that £1bn replacing them = keeping our entire squad and adding £1bn of players to it for those who think it doesn't matter. That's just not rational. We'd obviously be in a better position with the latter and it makes the manager's job easier.

Now sure, there's amortisation and players wages to take into account too as someone you get cheaply or even free could be on a huge salary (Ibra, Sanchez), but as a rule having a large transfer kitty to dip into over and above what you bring in from sales is a much better place to be in than only spending similar amounts to what you recoup from sales.

Yep. Net spend is garbage. So what you got lucky with a club massively overegging a player's worth during the peak madness?

At best it means they have some good scouts. Well done, who cares?
Surely the whole reason it's supposed to mean something, if anything, when said by a fan, is that you nurture players into being good rather than buy a ready made team? All the Liverpool players were bought to immediately perform. They were all already at that level and admittedly excelled in a decent system they fit in to.

Do Liverpool not have a PR person? If they do they should get everyone into a room and say "Right, nobody and I mean absolutely nobody talk again until the season is over".

Klopp looks and sounds like he's on the verge of a mental break down every post match and this continuing to belittle journalists because they ask a question he doesn't like is very, very Jose Mourinho-esque, at least Mourinho did it in a calculated way, Klopp just calls them an idiot.
