What if hypothetically the player did know lots of personal information about him because he did in fact have a gay crush on him? Would it still be a homophobic insult, or just a statement of fact?

Worlds gone soft, I'd consider 'gay boy' as childish insulting, could use a lot worse terms. There are plenty of gay boys, men, women, girls out there, feels making such a big deal of this is nearly making the word 'gay' as something shameful. Slap on the wrist yes, and move on.

No, it’s homophobic. Using the word gay as an insult is exactly what makes the word appear as something shameful. Nobody’s saying you shouldn’t utter the word, it just obviously shouldn’t be used as an insult. “World’s gone soft”. Feck me.
