I think part of it is that he used to be a super dribbler at youth level, and that dribbling rate almost carried over to men's football in the Bundesliga. Averaging 2.5-3.5 dribbles per game as a teenager was impressive. So much so that it overshadowed his actual underlying strength (his intelligence in the final 3rd, and his ability to link up in tight spaces).
He is decent with his dribbling when we aren't up against a low block, can glide past people without losing the ball. What he cannot do is use speed and tricks and go on a mazy run against a low block. Since most of the teams in Germany don't actually play a low block, that might explain his stats there ?

It can surely have an impact. It doesn't explain everything about his performances, but some influence can be there.

We see the opposite issue in the Bundesliga for Sadio Mane, who isn't destroying the league as some have predicted, but instead struggling to stay onside. Defenders positioned higher on the pitch then he is used to catch him offside all the time.

Interesting that ETH praised him specifically and mentioned that he's getting fitter and fitter.

Also interesting that mentioned that he tried him through the middle at the end (must definitely be feeling the lack of options in that area) as he started to experiment during our stranglehold on the game:
He's a bit of a slow starter, fitness wise. He seems like a player who needs to be played into fitness. He'll get stronger as the season goes on, I'm not worried.

Most of the good work he does is in central areas. Call me mad but if Garnacho can kick on and get more minutes to prove himself, in games where teams sit back and there's limited space behind I'd like to see this:

=========Martial=======
Garnacho=Sancho=Antony
=====Eriksen===Casemiro=

I think that team could play great football and unlock defences in tight spaces. My only question is whether there would be enough off the ball runs.

A fecking stupid decision by Southgate to not call him up. It just goes to show that he doesn’t pick on form and has his favourites.

Sancho has more goals this season than Saka, Grealish and Mount combined.

Yeah its pretty standard. Believe hes from Kennington which is nearer Vauxhall. Quite far from Croydon tbh
Just making the same point that all those areas in and around South London (e.g. Croydon which is historically seen as Surrey) share that accent.
So not unusual at all if you're used to any of those parts.

Its fine he's not called up. I actually think the penalty miss at the Euros, had an effect on him last season. He just didn't look confident, and I think he's starting to find his feet again now.

I think he'll make the WC squad anyway if he keeps scoring. So it's fine

It's weird from how he has been criticised so far this season in regards to not being good enough for England due to struggling with united but I think he has had a good start to the season with the first two games aside like all united players.

How are the other lot performing outside of goals though? (asking because I don't watch them a lot) Sancho tends to be pretty quite in most games, even when he's scored. Like last night for example if he didn't get the goal his thread would be a lot different.

Quickly becoming my favourite player in the team, is playing with confidence, is composed on the ball and is dangerous in and around the box.

Also the shin pad story is awesome, real class that from Sancho.

I'm not even a little bit shocked. Any manager who is all about link up intricacies is frequently going to have a wank over Sancho. He's the opposite of the shite general play, high error types we are stocked with. He and Eriksen will be manager favs.

He is getting better but this is barely 50% of his best. Once the team clicks, he and Donny will be brilliant.

I'd legitimately forgotten about Donny's existence for a good three weeks or so there before I saw the last couple of posts. :lol:

I think Sancho would oust Rashford for the left wing space unless Antony is slower to grow into the league and needs more time.

I agree with a few of the recent posts you have to consider that this current United team is not playing to the total intent of the manager. Give it a few more months with training and coaching and I reckon there will be incremental improvements over time.

If United get the likes of a Toney / Oshimen that brings the wider players into more attacking positions because these profile of strikers (especially Toney) trap the ball well under pressure back to goal opening spaces from pre occupied defenders.

With a ball carrying midfielder and a striker that should bring this team to a new level and dynamic circumspectly improving the wider players.

Same. His name came up on a podcast I was listening to yesterday, if he does eventually get a start this season he’ll have waited longer than under OgS last season. He’s done here.

Saka has still been good, definitely deserves the call up. Mount just offers something different and has versatility.

Grealish is the one he should have been selected over though. Weird as he's never seemed like a Southgate favourite but picking him at the moment smacks of favouritism for sure.

He needs to take more risk by taking defenders on, i don't buy the idea he hasn't got enough pace to ghost past people, he needs to at least attempt more take ons and drives either to the barline to cross or cut inside to get a shot away.

The above happening is all down to him and to a greater extant the manager, i remember a memorable quote by Micha Richards saying SAF was yelling at Giggs in the Manchester Derby to take him(Richards) on or he(Giggs) was going to join him on the bench if he wasn't attempting it more often, According to Richards behold it was as if Giggs was 18 again Roling back the year Running at him every time he had the ball.

I do believe wide players need to be encouraged to take their man on, either before the games or in game instructions, because as we all know they are humans and can have the fear of getting whacked but a little encouragement can be the difference in pushing them beyond their limits, for me that's what i think young players like Sancho needs, the task is on ETH to demand that he goes 100mph in games.

He is 22…still a baby

I hope ETH can stay at United for a good number of years, then the young players will have a better chance of developing.

Chopping and changing managers can really halt a players career.

Yes a manager who knows what he's doing, rates him high. Take note Southgate..
Southgate has options, ETH doesn't really.

A few nice finishes aside he's still not done all that much.

And I really don't understand this never ending quest to get fully fit. We've been saying this since he came.

Don't think he rates Sancho or Grealish much but the noise around Grealish is always louder so it just saves him some grief to keep Grealish around

Southgate has a boring style of play but he generally picks the right players for his dull system.

Sancho doesn’t deserve to be in the England squad currently, much as I think he has the talent. He’s probably (correctly) 7th choice for the wide positions currently. It’s on him to start turning in consistent performances and working his way back up that list.

I think he’ll be on the bench for the City match if everyone is then fit, so job 1 will be getting himself ahead of Antony or Rashford in the United team.

Don't worry. Covid-19 period will allow for more players to be selected for World Cup. Given his form, Sancho will make the squad for sure.

I think people imagine he is like Iniesta but its mostly super safe passes. Keeping possession is nice but at some point you have to make a risk to make a chance. Lingard was great at "link up intricacies" as is Donny but yet both are out. If anything I would prefer that from central players but I want my wide players to take more risks.

I really doubt it. I feel people on here overrate Sancho and underrate Rashford. its been a theme even before Sancho came and has continued despite mediocre showings. Now they gonna start with Antony. People always assume Rashford is the sacrificial lamb

You can't, in the same line, go from implying Sancho's link up is basic or overrated to praising a player who frequently gets the simple things wrong. We would have to really underrate the value of general play to sustaining control. Our overabundance of high error types with inconsistent general play is also its own problem. Rash isn't underrated or anything, he's rated just right as a specialised weapon. It's not a badge of honour to take bad risks over and over again. He's more dynamic, will give him that but it doesn't on its own translate to the type of general play Sancho brings to the table.

What do you think Rashford tries? He's not exactly Bruno in his hollywood passing rate, which is a good thing, but he's also like Bruno in the sense that he has a lot of miscontrol. I'm not sure how you can criticize Sancho for his general play, while at the same time praise Rashford for the same thing.

Thus far
Sancho: End product, generally good with the ball, but is super safe to the point where he can be anonymous. Contrast with the Sociedad match where his cameo was filled with poor touches/passes.
Rashford: End product, but is generally not great in possession and can be anonymous (for ex. Southampton).

Constant movement is not something that is still natural to this team. That is either because they are still suffering from Mourinho and Ole's flaccid systems or because individual players do not have that style. When I watch City, the players are always always on the move.

I watched the goals against Arsenal again and noticed that for the first goal, Sancho passes the ball to Rashford and then simply stops. He should be making a run into the box either wide or towards goal to drag defenders with him and not only give Rashford more options but also open space for any oncoming midfielder making a run.

If Ramsdale had made a save and pushed the ball to the side, Sancho would not have been there at the far post to keep the threat alive. He doesn't seem to have that instinct so EtH will have to coach it into him.

I really want to see him tried there instead of Rashford. His link up play in tight spaces is so much better and Rashford's really good at making those runs off of the left.
