Relax fellow muppets. I work in a big corporate and handle a few negotiations every month. This is a classic nego tactic. The key for the buyer is always to lower the asking price "if the seller wants to sell".

  1. Firstly, the facts is we want to buy the player and BVB wants to sell (for the right price)
  2. Since the quote is €120m, BVB have showed their hand already. Meaning, its not going to be more than that no matter what.
  3. Most definitely 120 is within our budget for the player.
  4. We know that if we pay 120 the player is ours.
Now, in any market, whatever you're buying, you have to negotiate. So, here comes the next phase:
  • United want to bargain so that it does not feel that we are prepared to pay "anything" the seller asks for. It doesn't make us look good in the market. The next player we want to buy will also demand something if we give in - that won't be good for us.
  • Since there are no other clubs in the running, we have the upper hand because of no. 1 and 2. We just want a "discount".
  • Saying "Deal off" doesn't mean that the deal is actually off. We might comeback after 2-3 weeks with the 120 offer.
  • We are not put off by 120m, because we would've publicly backed out if that were the case.
  • Dortmund are also holding on because they want to test our resolve. Refer to no. 3 and 4.
So, I am pretty sure that we will ultimately get Sancho probably for €105-110m in total. As Fabrizio said - these things take time simply because time is used as a tactic in any negotiation.

I’m wondering why Woodward is messing around and hasn’t just offered a single upfront payment of £130m to get this wrapped up nice and quickly but I’m also thinking that if he does that I will definitely criticise him for paying over the odds.

feck you Woodward, I guess.
Yeah he is an incompetent bastard

Damned if he does and damned if he doesn't but I think on this instance we are seeing an elaborate PR campaign in motion. Dortmund insist they won't negotiate or lower the fee whilst we posture that it's too much then fan lose their shit thinking the deal is off but when it's done both parties come out looking good.

Dortmund get their huge fee and Woodward gets to claim he went above and beyond for his manager.

I made a similar post a hundred pages earlier. It’s not gonna work. Muppetry is like an addiction, sort of an emotional rollercoaster. No one can resist it. I’m a muppet now. Welcome to the club

He already knows a lot of the players, he's English and he used to live in Manchester mate. There's zero concerns over Sancho integrating.

And he can't play in Europa League anyway so I doubt he'd be even training with us. Whats the point training and then getting 20 days off without playing a game? Probably be given time off until we come back for next season.
If they're certain behind the scenes that it's done then fine.

If it isn't, I don't want to see us scrambling around for back-up targets into the season. That's how we ended up with plan D, Fellaini, in 2013 when our number 1 target for CM was Fabregas, which fell apart late in the Summer. Then our other targets had fecked off elsewhere or their clubs weren't willing to sell so late.

Or in 2018, when our target was a CB and the Maguire deal fell apart late, we ended up with nobody in that position because it was too late for alternatives.

Definitely a bad idea wanting to play the waiting game because we'll end up worse for it. I'd happily walk away from the Sancho deal if they can't find agreement by August 12. Gives a month to try plan B.

My worry is that the reports from Germany claiming it´s basically done deal, are exaggerated and that it´s actually the Dortmund side that are playing games here (at least strongly participating in it). By leaking out that a deal is close, they know the disappointment among the United fans will be huge the moment the transfer collapses.

What? We activate a clause buy back a player to sell to another club to help buy their player? Even for this place that is nuts.
Sort of thing Madrid, Barca and Chelsea will do, so?

How many of those transfers have seemed worth it in retrospect?
Worth it or not, its going to be a hell of millstone around a young lads neck. People have quickly forgotten how much shit Pogba got for his price tag at the start, people just moved on when Neymar went for what he did.

I'd like Sancho at the club, I'd like it even more if we can keep his total value below £100m with a fair amount of that in add ons and incentives (I'm not saying thats likely, but it'd be good if it happens). Ed is doing the right thing haggling if its a possibility, not good for the muppets in here but we've got a good two weeks from the end of our involvement in the Europa league before they come back for pre-season training, so nothing needs to be done before then.

Edit: Didn't answer your original question as it was obviously rhetorical.

No. What media outlet does Woodward own to benefit from this?
Number of clicks/social media interactions concerning Manchester United = more money from sponsors. Not directly ofcourse, but it shows how popular and talked about the club is. E.g. they can demand higher payment from sponsor deals.

It’s a too complicated theory which ignores the real cost of dragging on a major transfer in favor of vague idea of clicks and sponsor relations. I’m glad that the adepts Of conspiracy started to show up though :)

When you think rationally, Dortmund for all their bluster and current bravado are the one who would take the biggest financial hit if this transfer doesn't go through this year United could still get Sancho next year Sancho could negotiate bigger wages and signing fees with less time on his contract next year.
Unless Sancho extends his contract with them which is highly unlikely if they price him out of the move they are losing big time if they don't sell him this summer.

All this posturing and media management makes for good optics for them but when push comes to shove they will sell.

Some are reporting that the deal is already off the table. 120 millions are too much and Dortmund wont sell for less, because they think Sancho will be sold for 120 or higher next year. United will offer 80 millions but they know that they have to look elsewhere.
Some people forget Dortmund has to pay City too if they sell Sancho. About 17 millions would go to City....

120M in the context of Covid and less incoming financial revenue is overly expensive.
Not over a few seasons, considering his age, how long his career is left and if he wanted to leave his sell on value.

Then add to that we paid 80mil up front for Maguire then 120 over 3 seasons is a steal in comparison.

Obviously. But to imply that Woodward/United benefit from transfer rumblings more than signing that top talent is ludicrous. I'm not convinced a few tweets from Romano benefits the club tangibly in any way. Signing Sancho definitely would (but unfortunately that ship has sailed).

Since there's no news I have a sickening question to ask you guys.

What would you rather?

A) We sign Sancho and don't win Europa league
Or
B) No sancho but we win Europa

I kind of do see the board's side on this. At the same time we're saying that all clubs are hit hard by the virus and will likely be hit harder next season at this rate, we want to spend a club record on a young attacker from Dortmund.

Some will also likely recall the last two attackers we bought from Dortmund.

If this were any other scenario, I'd expect a compromise between the two parties. BVB can say they don't want to sell and he's a lovely lad and hey look over here we all the cards - but - he will eventually leave and I'm not sure his stock can rise any higher. Plus, Covid could well stop audiences next season too, in which case their revenues are going to get significantly hit. At that stage, the, say, 80m from United would look seriously attractive. And is his presence going to really change their outcomes that much? Second best team in the league and unlikely - even with him - to be first imo. They'll be in the CL, so no delta on funds there either. And they've bought some expensive players recently presumably on high wages.

It really feels like a win-win for both clubs to get this done, so it will happen. Given our track record, I can see why BVB hope they can get whatever they ask, but I can also see why our board wouldn't want to just cave to that.

We can look at it that way, there is also the possibility that we spend £60m on an alternative. £40m saving there.

However; I cannot see a replacement that will cost £60m and get us where Sancho would get us. So a replacement will be good but I do not think there is a player out there better than Greenwood or Rashford. Sancho is, or we could say he is very comparable.

Now, if we are going to spend £60m on one, save £40m but not get CL football, in the long run we have lost money. The build is halted.

Not saying sancho will guarantee us top 4, but he will give us a better chance of closing the gap to the top.

I believe with Sancho and other reinforcements, we can close the gap to 10-15 points and go further in the CL = more revenue.

Knowing how long it takes us to complete deals do you have any faith is us pulling this kind of stunt off?
Don't think Madrid, Barca or Chelsea get this sort of deals done quicker than us.

A. Now we have third sewn up I have very little interest in watching us play random teams across Europe throughout August when we could be resting.
