James Garner - Player Watch

Personally, I think he is a player worth keeping an eye on for the rest of the season. Talented on the ball and a very good passer. Yesterday he was not only a creative force for them, but also made the most recoveries on the pitch with 8.

He will have one year left on his contract this summer and will be available for a sensible fee this summer. We need more numbers in midfield and have limited funds. I think it could make sense to bring in a young, homegrown player at 23-24ish.
I hope we are smarter than that and tie him down to a long term deal and I think if he's sensible he will accept. The only reason he hasn't been involved this season is due to injury.

For what it is worth, I would be very surprised if we did go back for him. Dont think there is anyone at Man Utd anymore «championing» for him. But he has several traits we really miss in midfield at Man Utd.

If I was him, I would not sign anything before the summer. But Everton under Moyes could be a good place for him to develop.

I doubt we will bring him back any time soon. Sadly. Though ala Angel Gomes I'd reccomend it.

I doubt it too. Unless Ruben Amorim himself notice him when we play them. Because I do think he share a few traits with some of Amorims previous midfielders (Hjulmand). And that we currently lack in our midfield.

IMO he is similar to Ugarte but with a more offensive passing radar. I'm hoping maybe Wilcox and Vivell will notice.

I'd definitely be looking to bring him back. Quality player and I'm guessing we've a relatively low buy back option.

We've got one CM at the club in his prime. We need two more.

I think they would pair quite well but I'm not sure he's similar in how he plays, more like a Wharton type.

I personally feel with Garner, what we did is the right idea. You put in a buyback and ship them out, he's been gone since 2022 and he's had regular football at a good level. if he develops to the point we think we want him back, you have the buyback option. I guess we have no idea what the level of buyback is but he was sold for £15m so maybe it's like £25-30m or so. Given our finances and we don't seem to be selling garnacho, maybe a 'cheaper' option like that will appeal to the higher ups.

James Garner contract expires in the summer of 2026. If he dont sign an extension, he should be available at a fair price this summer.

Season and a half waiting seems a long time to be honest. Plus why would he not renew for his own financial security, he's supposedly on 45k a week and that was his first big deal?

I think the suggestion was to go for him already this summer when he’s got just 1 year left on the contract

Ah ok, makes sense. I wonder what his market value would be right now, depends on if United value him at more than the buyout fee I guess.

Do we actually have a buy-back clause for him? According to The Athletic, at the time, we only have a sell-on clause..
For a reasonable fee, and if he proves himself in the second half of the season, he might be an interesting option, but I do feel like he's missing a bit physically in terms of strength and mobility.

Of all the lads we’ve lost recently this one stings the most as he’s levels above anything we have and never even got a proper chance.

Nothing wrong with letting him go to mature and become the player he is now.

I think people underestimate how long it takes for a CM to be ready for the top level. He's there now after about four years away from the club.

But I've always been a fan, think he's massively underrated and just the type of player we need.

I really don't see a huge gap between him and Wharton.

Glad he is doing well. But not every academy player who goes on to start for someone else needs to come back

His versatility due to his intelligence is very useful but I won't pretend that everything has been rosy. He looks good for a couple of weeks and then really poor for a couple of weeks when played in the middle. Not sure why that is but he's been teetering on the edge of becoming a squad player rather than a starter. He did have a fantastic game in the middle against you in preseason so will be interesting to see what we do when everyone is fit.

Another good game yesterday? Did not see it, but read that he was good.

I watched abit of the Everton game, he looks decent in phases but i saw him exposed defensively aswell.

He appears to be at a level we’d be pleased with a homegrown squad player, but there would be some clamour to upgrade.

I did not catch the Everton game this weekend, but notice he again got a lot of praisw for his performance. Out of position at left back. It is not really a position that plays to his strengths, but he has done well there. Probably due to a lack of options at Everton. Or maybe they just keep him a bit under the radar that way with his contract running out this summer?

Anyway, his stats looks very impressive too.

8 progressive passes (the highest of any player on the pitch)
9 passes into the final third (the highest of any player on the pitch)
3 passes+crosses into the box (the highest of any player on the pitch)

Also had a completion rate of 85 % compared to a team average of 79 %.

He's started well this season. Moyes suggested we might have an option to extend his contract for a year and since we are discussing a new contract for Pickford, one for Garner will be in the works.

I really like him as a player. He's got a bit of everything, which is what is needed for a centre midfielder (and makes sense why he can do a job in defence).

Hope he can push on and establish himself in midfield permanently. England also need more options in CM/DM..

What he has developed at Everton, and lacked at Man Utd, is his mobility. He now look like a player with both pace and running power. Maybe Dyche did him some good after all?

Everton has been really good for him. Think he has devloped nicely. Would make sense for him to extend. But also think Man Utd should consider him this january. At least if he continue his form..

Yeah it’s clear to see. He looks a bit of a unit now as well. Pair that with his technical ability and there’s a real player in the making there. I really think we should look at bringing him back this summer.

Think that is natural for a player to grow physically in their early 20s.

Hopefully he stays. He will have a clear run to being our main midfield 6 from next season onwards on this form as I imagine Gana will leave or be phased out.

A baffling sale, wasn't at it once during the Bilbao pre-season game and then shipped off to help pay for Anthony. Criminal.
That’s just modern football. Get prepared because it’s only going to get worse in terms of youth players being sold off and coming good.

Although I don’t necessarily think this was a bad move for the player or club. He wasn’t good enough to play constantly at the time and he needed minutes for his development.

Considering how Man Utd ended up, I think he would have played alot there too.

Indeed, as I've alluded to in this thread, it's not like his whole career at Everton has been positive. He has had a number of injuries which have halted his progress and could be a reason for his inconsistencies.

This season though he has been very good.

He’d have a clear run at United too. He’d get a lot of playing time at the very least.
