How is he coping with the physical aspects of Championship football??
He's made great strides since Watford.

Very competitive when required and his confidence has improved.

He looks a senior player now and a classy one at that.

would love him to come to Holland for a season , by a good club, Utrecht, Groningen, Heerenveen, Vitesse, or even Feyenoord or AZ.

Loaning youngsters to another PL club in recent years has rarely work out well (not just from us but other clubs too) so I don't get the fetish of doing it.
Yeah there is so much pressure to perform to stay in the top flight and get the results done that rarely there will be a team who would wanna develop someone else's player. I mean Garner can work our for some of the bottom clubs easily but when things are not going on well it's a risk it would be a waste of loan for him. Another year in championship in a more progressive playing team pushing for the promotion would be great, then even another year at Forrest wouldn't be that bad.

The championship is definitely better than some of the first divisions around Europe like Portugal and we know players stepped up from there recently. Also Championship means a lot of games and English environment too. Perhaps Ole will try him at the preseason and then it's safe to say he could get a late loan move to Forrest too if he's not ready..

Why? Bar Ajax and perhaps PSV, Championship is much more competetive and, makes zero sense, would be a step down...

Really happy with Garner this season and what I think has gone unnoticed is how resilient he is for a young lad. Obviously started at Watford, was adapting and played in different positions, manager sacked, loan cancelled by United, moved clubs..

He's done very well to establish himself as one of the first names on the team sheet at Forest and a valuable championship player. Whatever we do next season he'll have his pick of clubs to develop at.

Looking very promising.

He's mentality got what it takes which is something you can't coach.

can he play as a lone CDM in the CL? Because that’s what we need essentially
Probably not yet, and realistically Ole has never shown that he wants to transition to a 433 so he'd play next to Fred or Scott, and likely wouldn't take that role for a year or 2 whilst he beds in. He has everything in his locker to be just as good as Carrick with time in my opinion, possibly better as his attacking game is more rounded. Obviously he could also turn out a lot worse if he doesn't fulfil his potential.

Ole never had a CDM of the calibre of Kante, Busquets, Casemiro, not even of the calibre of Ndidi or Rice. Of course he doesn’t use what he doesn’t possess :)

He could have tried either of Fred, Matic or McT there and never has. Sure they aren't good enough, but if that was his preferred system you'd have expected to see it by now.

Just for fun stats Garner (Nottingham Forest) vs last season Bellingham. I know they both are in different age, but I think it's to reflect the overall brief performance of Garner in his loan spell.

I also compared the stats with last season Kalvin Phillips just to see the standard but Phillips was just better than those two in almost every aspects. But Phillips is much older, played in the league for years, & played in much more superior team in Championship. His stats being above the other two is understandable.

Good post, I was very much in the camp of sending Garner on loan again to ensure he gets games - but I think he maybe he should get his chance next year now...

I think he’ll be given lots of opportunities pre season- especially with the Euros players coming back later- and it’ll be up to him to impress! I’m sure Ole has him in mind for next season!

If he’s loaned out next season, surely it has to be to a relegation battling PL team who’ll play him every week.

I don't see how a second season in the Championship helps his chances of getting into the United team

A "relegation battling PL team" want experienced players, so they're unlikely to "play him every week", or even play him a little. CDM is a spine position. Managers want experienced players in the spine.

Send him out to Germany. Their midfielders get acres of space and is fast paced.

Great post, how does he compare with Fred? Appreciate it's championship vs Prem, but if its a close call, then I would hope we can coach Jimmy into that kind of single pivot like Ndidi

Would be great to get him a loan to a decent club in a top league, but if we're not recruiting a new midfielder, I'd like him to stay. We have no options.

To play Pogba and Bruno with one CDM against decent attacking sides would require a player we don't possess, sure, but I wish he'd try it against some of the supossed 'cannon fodder'. McFred is just not needed against all opponents.

I wonder how Garner would do if he went to Dortmund for a season
I just have reservations about him adapting to the physicality and speed of the Premier League but I think he looks like an intelligent good technical player with a good eye for goal.

the EFL Championship is quite physical, the difference with the PL is the pace of it, so Garner can handle the physicality part just fine, the questions are can he adapt to the high pace & intensity of the PL? does he possess the quality to be part of 1st team squad? these are questions that need answers.

from the I've seen, he is as you said, he looks like an intelligent good technical player with a good eye for goal.

I agree,
I posted something similar before and someone mentioned Playing DM pace was not so much an issue but I reckon in the Premier League you have to have decent pace to play in any position

McTominay never went on loan. It's not the only route into the first team.

If Garner is ready to take Matic's spot, he's ready. And if Pogba is now permanently a winger, there'll be plenty of opportunities for Garner to play.

He's not talking about pace of the player, he's talking about pace of the game. It means if you want to play CM you need to have good awareness, touch and vision so that you can move the ball quickly enough and find space for yourself.

That describes Garner to a tee.

Maybe we could use him a bit on RB in games we dominate? Remember Keane and Gerrard both getting games at RB at a young age. Bayern used Kimmich primarily at RB for a few years quite recently.

Garner was a CB for several years as a youth. I dont think the defensive side of his game would be a issue. On the ball he would be a big upgrade. Could also be a good approach for him to adopt to the tempo of PL.

Not sure Garner is quick enough for RB really. Feels like he'd be better off on loan really.

Frustrating to read people speak of a 2nd loan so often, what's more a lower Prem. loan, as if he'd be guaranteed games.

He's the profile we need, with an aging Matic needing replacing. He just lacks experience. Give him a chance. Being in the united first team with less minutes is just a valuable as a loan elsewhere.

That's a decent shout tbf

But both Keane and Gerrard had the physicality to cope with the demands of the full-back position.

I just dont think Garner has the physique or the engine at this moment in time...

*Keane was fecking immense at right-back the times he played there. I remember he filled in there a few times in the 94-95 season pre-Gary Neville....He was a force of nature. If he wanted to he could've been a world class right-back.
Apparently though he HATED playing there hehe

I hope we take this approach along with signing a new midfielder and hopefully we that strengthens our midfielder considerably.

Could work as an inverted full back but would require a complete change of team shape (a RW who stays wide)

He wont get many games, see Tuanzebe. If Ole wants to give him 10 games, another loan to a better league would be better

He's better on the ball than both Fred and McT from what I've seen.

Seems better in the pivot than DvB.

I'd love us to bring him back and get a proper ball winning CDM. We'd be very strong in CM then.

I think he could earn a starting place in our team to be honest.

Probably true. Would probably be a question of what type of games we used him. It could also force him to work on his biggest weakness (something he probably will anyway for the next few months considering he dont have any games coming up).

You see more and more top clubs focus on their fullbacks during transition. Fullbacks usually are the most progressive players in a team. Liverpool stopped our transition play through preventing Shaw from moving up the pitch.

Not sure Garner is quick enough for RB really.
Probably not ideal for a fullback, but I dont think he is very slow. Garner is tall and lanky, and it makes him look more languid than he is.

He doesn't need many games, he needs to build premier league experience and the right mentality for united.

If he joined Norwich next season and returned after, he'd still probably only get 10 games. Give him 10 games here, the following 20. He'll be ahead of any external development.

First and foremost he needs to prove himself capable of being a squad option with the correct mentality, after that probe he is first team quality, if not, then he's a capable squad option in the united tradition.
