He's a decent PL player and somebody will snap him up. He's not good enough for where we want to go though.

I'd prefer Lavia. Different sort of midfielder but he's got massive potential and youth on his side.
Another cliche regularly spouted, that has seen us spurn countless players in the last decade that could have elevated us.

If rolling substitutes were a thing in the Premier League then sure- he’d be great! Wheel him on for set pieces and then wheel him off again for a player with a better all round game

Nonsense.

He stands out because he plays for Southampton. At Utd he's just be another player. Mctominay would be one of their best players.

We can't compete with City with more of this calibre of player.

We really are scraping the barrel if we’re taking this lad. A good free kick doesn’t equate to a top player. No other top club would go for him so why would we?

City signed Ake from Bournemouth (after their relegation I believe) who has been one of their best players this season. He also stood out at Bournemouth.

I think he’d be an extremely nice squad filler. He’s better than Philips for example at City.
he would also count towards our homegrown figure which will decrease when we release Jones, Tuanzebe, perhaps sell McTominay, Henderson etc

Ake was signed at 25. We would be signing a player who turns 29 in Feb to presumably a 5 year deal, the two signings in terms of squad composition and long term planning are completely different.

I wouldn’t say no for under 15m but I think he’s more likely than anyone to want to stay with them even after going down. If we’re gonna poach anyone Lavia would be better.

Players die at 30, true

We could offer him a 2 year deal at reasonable terms, if he turns out great, we can extend

Yes, I said all players die at 30.

There is no reason for him to accept a 2 year deal when he will rightfully have his pick of mid-table teams offering him 5+.

Exactly what I was going to say. In the meantime, let Spurs or whatever equivalent club sign him.

That's fine. If he decides to go with the 5 year deal at another club for financial reasons that's his right of course. But we should still put an offer out for him. He is a good player and I'd like to see how he does in an expansive system. A 2 year deal protects us if it goes south.

Similar was said about Trippier and now he's one of the best RB's in the league. Wish we'd got him in

If he is not too expensive i wouldnt mind him at the club. Has been a usefull Premier League player for years with one specialist ability. Rather have JWP in the squad than McT or vdB.

I think better to look at younger players, not that I'm concerned about his age per se, but rather our midfield are all in or approaching their 30s.

He'd be better off at Wolves replacing Neves or something.

If the internet was around 30 or so years ago I could imagine a ton of people saying the same thing when we signed a certain player from Forest after they got relegated

Trippier achieved and showed far more at that point than this lad ever has. Bizarre comparison.

So you think a midfielder who can perform at both ends of the pitch in a 4-4-2 is only good at free kicks?

No, but being an elite free kick taker doesn’t make him a top player, like I said. We don’t need squad fillers we have enough who aren’t good enough to be permanent starters as it is. We need first 11 quality players that push the current starters who aren’t good enough into the squad role that they deserve. He’s nearly 29, has barely got in the England squad for their problem position and has just been relegated. It’s laughable.

Probably above average who is not good enough to be starting for us in the champions league Knock out round.

Currently hold the record for the most free kick scored (17), probably good at ball progression but very poor defensively. His primary weakness is he is too easily bypassed and beaten past dribblers at this level.

He'll probably do good when we're throwing the kitchen sink at 70-90 minutes of the game.

I'd pass from signing him, probably good option for clubs like Everton, Tottenham or Brighton.

You would think that a United supporter would know better than to under rate a player just because he's great at set pieces. As stated, JWP he been performing really well in a 2 man midfield. Now what if he had 2 other midfielders with him like Bruno and Cassemiro? Not saying it would definitely work. But I think it's silly to write off a player because they are good at free kicks and because they play for a crap team. Imagine if we passed on Keane because Forest was crap...

Very hard pass in my view.

He'll probably get a move back to the Premier League this summer if he wants it but he's not good enough, not the type of midfielder we need, and too old for this transfer to make any sense.

If we're going for any Southampton player it should be Lavia.
