Jason Wilcox - Director of Football

Forgive me if you’ve all already discussed this but …..

What actually is Jason’s role as the Director of Football ?
How is he qualified to do the job ? And yes I have read about his previous roles especially at City, but it doesn’t seem to add up ?

(Is he SJR’s love child .)

he had the highest ever score on the DoF test. For the test, they make you wear a blindfold and the put spherical objects into your hands and you need to say whether or not it’s a football. he only got the basketball wrong. And the bowling ball. But he nearly got all the footballs right.

We don’t technically have a DoF anymore

How reassuring that we're in such good hands.

So what is Wilcox? He was moved into the DoF role. Surely his remit changed along with the title.

To be honest, us fans know barely anything about the majority of these roles. Most fans think DoF's are just transfer gurus but Ashworth spoke of his role and it sounded like transfers was not something that is necessarily down to him.
Transfers are handled by Vivell.

Wilcox picked up a few extra responsibilities but the club didn’t call him a DoF

Do you mean the club didn't announce it at the time? Because he's definitely the DoF according to the news the club website puts out.

Ok, must have missed that. I don’t recall seeing anything about it.

But wiki tells me this so must be true now
When Dan Ashworth left Manchester United on 8 December 2024, Wilcox assumed his responsibilities as sporting director.[28][29] On 4 June 2025, Wilcox was promoted to Director of Football for Manchester United, replacing Dave Brailsford.

Yeah, I think it was reported in the Athletic then everywhere else picked up on it but I haven't seen an official announcement

Well that’s his official title. I’d love to know what he actually does and how he is qualified to do it.

If have nothing against the man but in these days of cost cutting he’s probably earning the equivalent of 30 tea ladies so it seems legitimate to ask some simple questions ?

The interview solidified the idea to me that Ruben will not get sacked anytime soon.

As a fan I tend to focus on results, but ofcourse a lot more than that goes on. The entire management team and staff seems to adore Amorim, the culture at the club seems to be improving, they seem to have a clear and measured plan.

They are really not going to sack him after a few poor results, apparently Ashworth didnt fit this dynamic and they got rid. Ruben seems to really be their guy.

Yeah but it’s funny how JW appears and is in such a positive mood after our very recent form. He was very quiet four games ago.

Whilst, like many, I still have reservations about Amorim, a sustained period of stability would be very good for us, provided, of course, that it is accompanied by steady progress. Perhaps recent interviews with SJR and JW indicate that they believe that we are now on that path. If that’s the case then we can expect to see more of JW…..

Generally speaking, from what I read about Ashworth, he seemed a bit boring. He seems like he could make decent decisions, but didn't seem very ambitious or transformative. Perhaps that's not really aligning with the CEO and owners plan, speculation of course.

Can imagine something like that, I think INEOS are really heavy on trying to shift the culture and the mood at the club. Maybe not just someone that can do his role well in terms of output..

Re: Wilcox, I am gonna say I like him and he is obviously well thought of and talented. But if the football side goes wrong over the next few years we will have to be honest and say we put someone in the role that didn't have the experience, again. Hopefully it all works out.
