Jean-Philippe Mateta | no links to United

If it’s between Mateta and Sorloth, which I sincerely hope it isn’t, I’d pick Mateta any day of the week. He has averaged 15 goals in the premier league meaning the transition won’t be bad especially given we play the same formation. Same can’t be said for a 29 year old coming into the premier league. Such a weird comparison.
Mateta is 28 this month. And he’s only averaged 15 in the Prem this season and last. Whereas in that time Sørloth has averaged 21.5 goals per season and that despite not starting regularly for Atleti last season. In fact Sørloth’s goals per 90 topped La Liga last season, better then Mbappé from open play.

Weird comparison indeed.

It doesn’t matter what Sorloth’s xG. It may not translate over to the premier league. At least we know Mateta “can” perform in England. That makes Mateta a better option.

I didn’t even mention xG. And by your logic I take it you think Mateta is a better option than Gyökeres ?

No because he is younger and knows the system better. Surely you can see that? I didn’t say the league familiarity is the only reason.

He’s one year younger than Mateta. But you think he’s more likely to translate from Portugal than Sørloth is from Spain because he knows Amorim’s system ?

Yes absolutely. A 26-27 year old will adapt easier than an almost 30 year old. The league change is already going to be one issue. But the system is a completely different issue. Just take our team. They were bad in a 4-2-3-1 but they were horrendous in a 3-4-2-1.

Sørloth thrives in a lone striker role which is why Aleti want rid. He and Alvarez don’t jive as a pairing. I don’t think he’ll have to relearn how to play football to play in Amorim’s system, do you ? But being that he is 29 while Gyökeres is 27 you think the two year difference is a bridge too far, eh ? Despite the fact that he’s been playing in a tougher league and has a reputation for delivering in the biggest matches ?

No i didn’t say anything about relearning how to play football but there will be an adjustment period for anyone playing in a new system. That coupled with learning how to play in a new league will cause issues for a 30 year old. Also playing as a lone striker in an 4-2-3-1 is different from the lone striker in Amorim’s system. And look at their goal scoring record. Gyokeres is way more consistent, has improved his goal scoring form every single year the past 5 years.

It’s not so different playing in Amorim’s system as a lone striker. That’s an adjustment most good strikers could make quite easily. But since you’ve changed your argument five times and are now citing Gyökeres’ numbers in the Championship I will bid you adieu.

I still can’t believe you’re arguing Sorloth is a better option than Gyokeres. Sorloth did feck all in Germany. Sure he reached 20 goals in Spain in 2 straight years. Doesn’t make him a better option than Gyokeres. I only brought up Championship cause you can see Gyokeres’ trajectory in his career. He has improved year over year in terms of his game and goal scoring. Same can’t be said for Sorloth. Maybe it will help if you actually read properly to see what I’m saying first.

I still can’t believe you’re arguing Gyökeres is a better option than Sørloth. Just because Sørloth did feck all in Germany. Sure he reached 20 goals in Portugal in 2 straight years. Doesn’t make him a better option than Sørloth. You only brought up the Championship because you were running out of arguments. Sørloth has improved year over year in terms of his game and goal scoring. Same as Gyökeres. Maybe it will help if you actually read properly to see what I’m saying first.

Who would you go for, Mr hard to get?

Btw, I think the pressure would be relative. Ik you have Cunha and Mbeumo behind you, there’s plenty of others to help fix the goals. Totally different from Hojlunds situation this year
Sesko would be my option but looks like Arsenal is way ahead of in this also the asking price.
No matter who all behind you and how much they score as a lead striker expectation would be huge plus the Utd factor.

Sørloth's goal scoring streak in Spain has been impressive, but he failed in two top leagues before and Atleti wouldn't just give their 20 goals striker away for cheap. He'd cost 50m minimum and he's not worth it. Some players just thrive better in other leagues. He just gives me the feeling of a typical United flop, while I could see Gyokeres doing well in England.

Mateta is nowhere near good enough. The first 2 seasons in the league he was atrocious and couldn’t hit a barn door. Granted he has improved and his last 2 seasons have been a lot better but he’s still gone on massive runs without scoring. He is not the answer.

A Cunha Mateta
I had to ask Chat GPT for a song:

What a wonderful strike force!
Cunha and Mateta!
Smashin’ goals with no remorse!
They dink, they chip, they nutmeg too,
Opponents cry, “What did we do?”

It means no defenders—
For the rest of the game!

They’re bringing the pain...
They’re hard to contain...
Hakuna Mateta!
