Jim Thwaites

So nice to see a player receiving the ball and immediately turning and looking for forward options! Thwaites definitely has a look of Scholes about him

There has been a lot of negativity over the past few days on the caf regarding finances, injuries etc but our youth system could really pull us out of the mire over the next two to three years. There are a lot of very special kids that will likely get chances to impress soon

His weight of pass is really good. Unlike some of our first teamers who just drill the ball in without even looking if there's a player to pass to. He actually takes a look and delivers a decent ball.

From his highlights I get Beckham vibes, too bad that profile doesn't really fit Amorim's current system.

He has better close control than Beckham I would say. Obviously he'd need to demonstrate the ridiculous stamina and work ethic of Beckham and keep improving his passing, crossing and shooting to truly merit the comparison, but I think he's got more natural ability than Beckham did from what I remember. Mentality and fitness is what set Becks apart. I'm sure there's a place for him in Amorim's system even as a 10, but eventually perhaps at CM as somebody suggested. It's not like he doesn't have nous or work rate and his long passing is good.

Surely more like Scholes. He moves nothing like Beckham.

Bold call to already say he won't work under Amorim.

I think he changed the game yesterday. We were all iver the place in the second half and with him we gained control again. Hi pass to Lusale that led to the winner, with his left, was fantastic

He's a player who I really rate. Will be interesting to see who comes out on top between Thwaites, Lacey, Moorhouse, Ibragimov, Fletcher and Scanlon. One or two of those are perhaps not natural number 10s, but thinking with your first team hat on, that is where they would be best suited in Amorim's system you'd have thought.

I am a bit worried hes going to be too small though, even though I love my small midfielders it can be a problem.

He's a great player. He reminds me of Frenkie De Jong in possession and is a great passer. Has shades of Beckham too with his dead-ball deliveries. It'll be interesting to see how he develops

be interesing to see how he develops and what is his best position. I think '8'but time will tell

Wouldn't have thought Frenkie de Jong at all. While he's quite press resistant and can turn out of trouble with ease, I'd still see him as more of a passer than a midfield carrier/dribbler like De Jong.

I agree! I see more of Paul Scholes ilk, always on the half turn, great vision and long range passing. The only thing lacking is the goal threat at the moment

Superb today against Stoke U18s.

Would love to see him given a debut in the senior team in one of these premier league games.

Huge fan of this player, been more impressed with him during other matches.

Think he played it safe a bit too much, but the quality is clear. Some of the passing and press-resistance is a joy to watch.

Biggest centre midfield talent in the academy along with Kone for me.

That pass at 2:25 is no joke though, he’s clearly can play an incisive pass when given the opportunity.

That is a peach of a pass!.
He's always stood out in the youth team games to me as he's press resistant, takes minimal touches and has great vision. He takes a mean free kick too

What Thwaites, Bailey and Amir Ibragimov all have in common is their ability to move quickly with the ball. It's a bit of the same that someone like David and Bernardo Silva were so good at - players struggled to get close because they could move so quickly with the ball. When you see either of those 3 midfielders of ours receive the ball facing their own goal - the opponents don't get close to them because they turn so quickly. That way they are never really put under pressure

That's the one thing I feel our U21's midfielder lack - Fletchers, Devaney, Fitzgerald - they are good at passing, tackling etc - but they lack that ability to move quickly and find space.

He sure knows how to pass back and sideways , I give him that.
Watch a match compilation of Michael carrick. We miss someone who just keeps things ticking over and keeps possession in midfield. In Kone and Thwaites we might finally have 2 players who can develop into that role. I don’t understand why this club can’t see that ever since Carrick left, our midfield can’t control matches. Baleba will not help fix that.

He was very good in this game. Reminded me of Wharton playing that deeper role. Not the best opposition mind.

Sounds like a squad player from the 70's under The Doc!
We’ve got some great 1950’s throwback names in the U18’s.

We’ve moved past the Jadon’s, Jesse’s, Demetri’s and Shola’s to a new era in the U18’s of Jim’s, Albert’s and Fred’s.

Sorry I think that is what is drilled into young players today, possession and recycle. Adventure and taking chances isn't what modern football is all about.

Hopefully it works better for us than it has for Brazil over the past 20 years.

I think he looks very promising.

We've had quote a few of these smaller, good technique lads over the years and they don't make it. They're 5 a side players.

But Thwaites has that wand of a right foot than can fire passes all over the pitch. It gives him a "bigger" game for want of a better word.

As with all smaller lads there's still that worry if athletically he's good enough to make it but it'd be a real shame if he didn't.
