Some of you really need to get a handle on what professional football is in the sense you absolutely should not throw a boy into a man’s game.

This is their livelihood and from their perspective, once you are out on a professional pitch, you are fair game. Some fellow pros might go nice and not aim to take out a fragile waif of a boy, others absolutely will not, and then what? A yellow or red card whilst JJ is in bits because he’s not built to handle the men’s game yet? And then who should the finger be pointed at for him being out there in the first place? I think some of you have a romanticised ideal where he gets to be all pretty and fancy whilst pros, trying to win the game for their team, idly coo and let him be. This kid taking potential bonuses out of their pockets and what not. It may happen, but the consequences on the other side are so dire that the club will not be negligent or stupid enough to risk them until he’s physically ready.

It’s not his age holding him back, rather, his build. If you cannot see that he’s still built like a child the conversation is already redundant - grown men go easy when playing with children or they don’t play at all, which is why we have developmental stages - the youngsters that do come through super early are not built like Gabriel - they are typically manboys or, they are already extremely strong and wiry relative to their age, like Dowman. Even a young Giggs was built like a twig on first inspection, but when you actually look at him properly, he was sinewy, extremely agile and explosive and his speed and agility was already in its matured form - he didn’t get any faster or agile, which is what accelerated development typically looks like in terms of attributes if you don’t have a freakishly adult build at a pre-adult age. Gabriel might not get any more agile, but he almost certainly will get faster, stronger and more robust, and then he’ll be almost certainly in the squad.

You can’t simply parse skill from the other factors. Professional football does not and should not work that way, so every bit of skill you see him pull off, ask if that’s applicable against full-grown men giving him no quarter. Right now it’s clear that touch contact is dangerous for Gabriel at PL level - you absolutely do not want him getting a full-blown crunching tackle from a relative juggernaut in comparison to what he currently is. Look beyond - or stop isolating - the skill element and consider the other factors; I doubt he’d even get a run out in La Liga with his current build and that’s a much friendlier league for prodigious talent to be introduced to. His time in the PL will come when his body is ready to handle it and it would be irresponsible for it to come before that.
Well said.

Also worth noting that kids like him go through growth spurts which come with growing pains and increased injury risks. Lots of promising careers have been ruined because such risks haven't been managed adequately.

Hate to think what you said about Messi, Neymar, etc at 16 and how you wanted them to bulk up, potentially at the cost of how they can move nimbly.
Messi joined Barca youth at 13 and didn’t make his first team debut until he was already 17. Arguably the best ever, held back as some of the folks would think, until he was ready at 17

Something to think about too is if he pulled some fancy tricks off to embarrass defenders in the PL, you just know that someone is going to absolutely clatter him. It’s not the schoolyard where people say “take it easy he’s only a kid”

Couldn't have put it better myself but I doubt it'll change the mind of some, they've been told this multiple times and still want to put him in the first team

Obviously it was a long time ago so maybe my recollection isn't correct but wasn't that because of the La Liga rules around registration of non-EU players at the time.

I doubt it was just that

I recall Barcelona wanted to play him earlier but couldn't register him because they had too many top class non-EU players at the time.

Basically everyone was already talking about him as the next big thing the season before he made his debut but the rules prevented him from playing

Yes, that’s also a core aspect, which can’t just be brushed over.

Yep, Nani in the 8-2 vs Arsenal game making the opposition apoplectic comes to mind - a natural trickster like Gabriel humiliating grown men has its own complexities of how much would be tolerated before he gets some nasty challenges aimed his way.

My memory not the best about it but pretty sure he didnt feature as much as people expected at the World Cup in 2006 either?

Would have been around 18/19 at that time.

I only remember the Messi debut situation because I was talking to a Spanish Barcelona fan I bumped into in Manchester about it making my way into my first game at OT so stuck in my mind

Think a Sky commentator also mentioned it the season before his debut

But either way, Premier League isn't La Liga and Gabriel is a very slight guy so we need to protect him and not over do his physical load

At this age and level he looks better than Mason.
Greenwood had elite striking with both feet, but JJ Gabriel has that “magic” that I rate far above Greenwood. He needs to get stronger physically, but if he can translate that trickery into the men’s game, we’re looking at a world-class talent. Ballon d’Or level potential.

I'm assuming United will try to delay Gabriel playing against adults as long as possible, and the question is how much pressure, if any, will he/his family/camp/agents put on the team or not to speed that up.

Foden was similar sized and he made his debut at 17.5 and got 10 appearances. Then 26 (13 in Prem) appearances in his age 18 season.

Gabriel will be 16 in October, so if he's on the a similar timeline, he should be with the youth this season and part of next season, and he can join the first-team full-time at some point next season to train with adults full-time, and get a few sub appearances in, so he can be ready to be a proper first-teamer for the 2028 season, when he'll be 17 and 10 months old when the season kicks off.

There it is again. Wild claims putting pressure on a 15 year old.

Why can’t people just say “he’s a bloody exciting talent, can’t wait to see how he might transition to the senior game”

You guys are wild

“Bloody exciting talent”? That’s wild too. Way too much pressure on a 15 year old.

Why can’t people just say, “He’s alright, I suppose. Might kick a ball around professionally one day, who knows. Let’s not get carried away.”

You guys are wild

Probably just because he's probably the best 15-year old around, so if people extrapolate that, they think he has the potential to be the best in the world.

Can’t get my head around it at that agev
It works sometimes I guess, not all the time. Injuries, physical development, mental development, support systems, transfers, managers, luck etc all played a big part.

I love to criticise him, but Mbappe is really the best player in the world the past few years, and he was also probably the best youth player at that time around, doing crazy things.

Those that watch youth football, and there is a lot of access to it, could tell.

With JJ Gabriel, no idea how good he is going to become, but that he has insane talent is clear for all to see.

There are so many factors in this. We barely know anything about so many of these things. There are so many professionals involved in this. Not that they are infallible but they clearly have more knowledge and of course know so much more about him to make the right decisions. I fully trust the club with this.

Well done today, hat trick in youth champions league game
IF we can get past Brighton and draw a Championship or L1 team in the next round maybe he has outside shot of making squad. Although think the FA Cup is a most realistic possibility again would depend on a favourable draw

Yeah but Nwaneri, Harvey Elliott, Jose Baxter, Mathew Briggs all debuted at a younger age and has gone on to achieve greater things than Messi in certain versions of football manager game series. Don't bring silly things like realism into play in this.

he can hardly play for city with united clips plastered all over his socials.

People are understandably nervous about his situation at the club until he turns 17 and signs as a pro, if he chooses to do so.

However there's nothing any of us can do and as devastating as it would be he will have literally every club throwing everything at him and making every promise in the world, so its a possibility. The club will be doing their best to keep him so we'll see what happens.

That said, the 'deleting insta' thing could be nothing realistically. He might want to effectively have deleted his account for any reason but is required to keep it live for the Nike sponsorship deal so kept it minimally compliant. Or he could be pissed about not making the squad against Brighton (if he hasn't), who the hell knows

Apparently deleted all signs of Manutd from his bio today, dont have Instagram so cant verify but not promising if true

He did. And posted an “inspirational video” on his instagram stories which had the caption…

“Most people stay stuck because they obey their fear. Don't be one of them.

Your future is waiting on the other side of courage”
