People like to grab at positives. Which can be a good thing but sometimes just misleads.

There was a time last season when some posters were arguing that Lacey had grown to 6ft tall despite all the pictorial and video evidence to the contrary.

There is still time for a growth spurt for JJ though. If he gets to 5'8-5'10 that would be awesome.
 
I can just see the scumbag journos pressuring Carrick in the pressers about the boy.
He probably would have been better off at a club with a lower profile at least until his late teens to avoid all the scrutiny he will get at Utd.
I hope the boy has good people around him as he progresses through life.....and football.
 
Can we have a separate thread where people discuss player heights so every thread isn’t infested with it?
 
For those worrying about his build, who remembers Giggs breaking into the first team? Obviously he was very quick, but he also played when the opposition could still take chunks out of you. He survived, albeit with the likes of Eric, Robson, Bruce and co as minders.

Different era and impossible to compare. Yes the game allowed more aggressive tackling, but Giggs was also playing against a lot of players who would spend off days in the pub. Nowadays with sports science and the way the game has evolved, players are generally just stronger and faster.
 
What is his contract situation? I don't get those contracts while player is under 18. Can somebody can come and sign him with paying only small fee?

Yes. He’s a child so for obvious reasons it works very differently than signing a contract with an adult.

I recall an interview with Giggs saying that he struggled so badly in one of his first games because their fullback kicked the sh!t out of him which he told Robson, and Robson basically said "go play midfield for the next ten minutes", then Robson came back to Giggs and said "you can go ahead and play winger now" for which he had kicked back... doesn't work today anymore though.

But yeah, a young Giggs was something else - blistering pace, amazing ball control and had the ability to weave between players at top speed with the ball close to his feet - not fair on anyone to compare them to him really.

Oh, thanks the bad feeling has gone away now.. The "Shit" you speak of is my opinion based off of what we do know. I didn't once say that I was right, only that I have a bad feeling. Obviously I don't want to be right..

How do you know that he respects the current manager and that he sees himself being here for the foreseeable? Given that you said he sees himself making it here. Do you know him or his father personally?

I have a bad feeling, even if it is irrational and I shared that in a thread along with other peoples opinion. Are you going to reply to every post that you don't agree with and tell them this shit needs to stop? Maybe you should go into one of your sheds and work on not being a D**k..

His father has made several social media posts praising Carrick so we already know their personal thoughts on the manager, which are very positive (the opposite of Amorim).
 
I feel like we're in a great position to keep any young player excited, especially him

The two most logical roles he'd play at the senior level are left wing/inside forward or down the middle as the #10

Our left wing is fairly flexible, with Cunha and Dorgu both valued but also able to play multiple roles. He has a path to minutes there

And our #10 spot is occupied by a talisman who will need replacing in the next few years. He has a path to minutes there

Kind of a dream scenario for him if he pursues it and keeps improving

Will admit I was initially frustrated he didn't get on today, however then I remembered he is not on the same trajectory as Nwaneri or Dowman

We're playing some big boys now in Atletico Madrid, PSG, Leeds and AC Milan - and I imagine by the last two, we'd be wanting to play more and more of our first team to get them match sharp for the first game of the season. Would he really get a cameo over the likes of the U21 lads who are on tour when there'd be limited game time left?

He’s being fats tracked really.

I’ll admit I thought he’d get a few minutes (if only as another visible reminder to JJ/dad that he’s a key player in our future and we want to keep him), but a tour trip and first team training is still good experience.

Can see him getting some minutes this season but as long as right thing for him (not driven by how young we can give someone a debut to), it’s all good.

I think it all depends on how he looks and compares in training.

He'll get some minutes in one of those games I'm sure. It could be they didn't want to play him in the easiest game as he'd likely excel and just add to the pressure. Some minutes against tougher opponents with a bit of a humbling would serve him well for the season ahead.

Depends what happens in training. He's so young and isn't this his first exposure to training with the first team? The normal path for any academy player is usually: train with first team for a bit > feature on bench as an unused sub on a few match days > get a few mins as a sub. JJ is only just at the very first stages. If he excels against the senior players in training then maybe he'll see some minutes. If it looks like too big a step up (and that could just mean physically, not technically), then he won't get minutes. It's so early for him still.
 
The youngest player to have ever represented the first team at 15 years and 299 days old. Previous record holder was David Gaskell who was 16 years and 19 days old. I'm sure JJ Gabriel will manage to beat that record proper in a competitive match in the next 2-3 months.
