I think Palhinha is a fantastic player but much like with Casemiro we’re too late to make a move, the time was two years ago when he was leaving Sporting as now he’d cost £60-£70 million and coming up to 30 so we’d get a couple of years then be back to square one like we are with Casemiro.

They latest rumors were €55-60m with Bayern having an agreement with the player but not wanting to pay this much. They are looking for a steeper discount on what they agreed upon with Fulham in the summer.
Are people not concerned with how limited he is on the ball? The numbers aren't terrible but when I watch I am not seeing much range. Beast of a tackler but bringing in a guy in his late 20's who is all about engine and physicality with mediocre technical abilities does not seem to line up with many of the complaints that have been made about our current options.
When building from the back he tends to push forward and let Iwobi and Cainey drop in and make the play, gets a lot of his passes through picking up breaking balls and neutralizing attacks. Does that very well but you will not get much playmaking out of him from deeper areas. Maybe I have just watched the wrong games.

To me he strikes me as the exact type of player we’ve made so many blunders on and should stay away from him. 60 mil is a large investment especially at his age and the rest of the money that would need spent to get the team up to speed. We’d be better once again buying for the future so we have a squad that is maturing together.
To be honest every time I’ve watch him I wonder what all the hype is about. He’s alright but sure we could find better at a better age profile.

Yep. He's no better than when he signed for them for £17m 2 or so years ago. It was mad that we weren't in for him and Boubacar Kamara at the time but it would be even madder to go back in for him now at triple the price and him heading towards his 30s.
Same people who say let's get him, will be complaining why we spent 60m on an 28 year old who's not good on the ball. Keep thebfingers away from him. For that money you can also get Zubimendi who is much better for example.
You did not. He is a beast defensively, but should be surrounded with supreme technical ability around him if we finally want to be a side who is comfortable going against heavy press from top sides. Which we might be able to do in some areas (Martinez, Shaw, Mainoo..), but for example you add Bruno and Rashford along with Hojlund on top and well, you conclude, we won't be able to compensate for it to full extent. And that he is simply not worth such an outlay at his age. At the price that Fulham paid 2 years ago, it is no brainer of course.
We are definitely a strangely built team, that's for sure.
Kerry hau reporting that Bayern has informed Palhinha that no transfer will happen in January. Not quite clear if that means not now or not ever, but he makes it sound like the latter.
He was so stupid extending his contract at Fulham if going to Bayern was his big dream.
He was already on long contract with Fulham so his transfer fee would be more or less similar even without extension , I think him extending his contract with pay rise is actually smart rather than pinning all hopes on transfer which may or may not happen .
Tbf to him I think he still had a lot of years remaining but I almost remember reading that he had some sort of gentleman’s agreement (yeah, I know!) with Fulham when he extended. ie if bayern came in again, he could go as it gave them enough time to find a replacement (which was the sticky point in the summer iirc).
Anyhow, football moves fast. Do you thinks you guys will still come in for him or maybe you have identified another target?
The problem with the DM position at Bayern is, that they really only need a „proper“ defensive midfielder in maybe 12 games per season. In regards to other targets: i hope they consider Zubimendi.
Zubimendi is a talent yeah. I get you, especially a large investment in a position you don’t need often. Or maybe a “DM” a little technically better than Palhinha.
Will be interesting to see if he moves this summer. Not that many players of his profile and quality available.

Ryan Giggs played basically every game he was available for from about 17 and played until his 40s. Junior Messias didn't turn pro until 27 and is now probably finished in his early 30s.
Not saying it is one-to-one. But I do think there is an element of milage. Playing football takes it toll.

If there was a noticeable difference, I think we'd see players who spent most of their careers as squad players, backup keepers etc generally carry on for a few years longer than others. I dunno if there are any numbers on something like that, but it doesn't feel like it's the case?
Think he's good and certainly in the pool of players we should be looking at. Not sure Bayern's interest will still be there so hopefully Fulham would be more reasonable with his valuation unless theres a bidding war with multiple clubs, which could still be the case with or without Bayern. Wouldnt want him for a very large amount of money that takes up most of our budget for the window

He's not a solid defensive midfielder, he's a deep midfielder who only has strengths with the ball. Mikel Merino is vastly superior to him in every way and plays next to him. Merino is the ball winner, the creative force from midfield and the one who gets forward to score and set up goals. Zubimendi just takes the ball and plays simple passes. He's a placeholder for when Merino gets forward and they need a body to sit. He's been hyped up for years as if he's the next Xabi Alonso but he's average at best in his position.
Depends on your point of view. Quite a few players are really good well into their mid thirties. But there is so many players who start picking up alot of injuries and regress in their late twenties/early thirties. Rooney a typicsl example, but also Sanchez and Casemiro for us. I think players who can play for years, are usually extremely gifted and play football with ease (Giggs, Modric) or freaks of nature physically (Milner). Or both (Zlatan).
Even at 29, Palhinha would have at least five good years left if he could play well at, say, 33 years of age,
Let’s use our recent DM signing for case study. Casemiro is 32 years old now and we already want to replace him. I would say at least 3 years not 5 years. 5 years would be maximum not at least, which is not high probability. Another case study, Matic didn’t look good at 31.
But I also think both of them had played alot of football at that age. A player like Fernandinho looked great even at 35.
I don't think he is good enough for where we want to be. He is perfect for a team that gets constantly bombarded by the opposition team, but he is mediocre on the ball and wouldn't look as good in a team that fights for trophies.

If we are gonna use Mainoo in central midfield in a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 - we need a really good defensive midfielder who is also extremely mobile. We need another Kante
What is the probability of Palhinha to be able to perform at top level at top club’s expectation at 33 years old? IMO, Not a high probability.
Is it wise to take the risk again to spend big money on 29 or 30 years old DM after it bit us twice before just because there were one or two or few DM had lasted until 33-35 years old?
I don’t think it’s a wise one especially that we are not one or two players away to win the league and UCL to be able to gamble on this kind of signing.
Normally I would agree, but in this case I think it depends a bit on fee and wages. Apparantly on £80k a week. Even if we increased by 20 pst he would be on one third of Casemiro.
I really do think a player like Mainoo would benefit greatly from a player like that next to him. If there is a good, young option available we should obviously go for that option instead. But I dont think there is. And even if we did bring in someone like Joao Neves (not likely) our squad would sorely miss an established, experienced DM if Casemiro leave.
He’s missed the off ramp. His price is too big for a player of his level at his age.
I think Zubimendi would keep Leeds up, but otherwise I don't totally disagree with this, though it's a little harsh. Zubimendi is a very tidy player and seems to read the game well defensively, so he'd help us for instance, but when I've seen them, Merino's power and pace really jump out as superior.

Bayern seem to have closed it for 38m. It was 60m when Chelsea and us were linked with him last year. Probably idiot tax.
Possibly, but he’s also a year older and wasn’t as good this season as he was the last.
We were close to signing him for 60 million the last time we tried for him. But back then we were desperate.
We still look desperate. I also cannot figure out, what makes him such a great fit that both the former and the current coach seem to want him.
