Joao Gomes

Thanks.

And yes, I think one of his best traits is his reading of the game. He is very good at anticipating danger. A bit similar to Rice in that perspect. I like that in young players as it tell you something about their football brain.

In my opinion, both due to wages and what I would guess the fee to be, Scott would probably be my first choice in the PL. I think he would be an excellent option for Man Utd next year regardless of who else they bring in.

I think you are right Mateus Fernandes and him would be a good combo. In all honesty, Fernandes could probably need another year at WHU. But I think Man Utd will get him already this summer;

A) WHU are in the deep financially. I think they need to make profit on a sale.
B) Something about how Mendes operates. Man Utd are looking to sell Ugarte. He will make that happen to make sure he moves on another client (M Fernandes)
C) Why risk waiting? If he continue the trajectory he has been on since WHU finally understood that they had to play him as a CM there will be plenty of competition for him

Do Wilcox have the cojones to go with Fernandes and Scott? Probably not. I would not be surprised at all if it was true we sounded out Bruno G. He would be a good partner for basically all the young players we are linked to and Mainoo. My worry is that he is not good enough to justify the fee or the risk.
Why wouldn't they? What we need the the right profiles to fill our 3 midfield slots. Not names. Not expensive ones. Given how this new front office rebuilt our attack. We can hope they take a similar approach to our midfield.

I watched the second half of the West Ham game and was, again, far more impressed by Fernandes than Gomes. The former wasn’t sparkling but he was very busy, very energetic. I think he’d be a really good signing alongside another midfielder of a different profile.

Gomes did very little other than lose the ball weakly in midfield for one of their goals. He’s just too average. If he had height, or a better engine, or a better range of passing, he’d be a really useful player, but he’s not.

Mateus Fernandes is more attacking-oriented, while Joao Gomes is the opposite, so not an ideal comparison. We need both.

I didn't watch the game, but did you notice Joao Gomes carrying ability? I looked up the stats and his ball carrying stats were very, very good this game, just wondering if it's something you noticed. Defensively looks like he had a really solid game too, other than his error.

Joao Gomes wasn't even Wolves' deepest-lying/sitting midfielder - that was Andre.

Joao Gomes was doing the "Ugarte pressing the ball up the pitch" role, and kept himself ahead of the ball and of Andre when Wolves had possession.

Which makes sense given they're both defensive midfielders, and André is more known for his passing and Joao Gomes for his duel contesting and tackling. That's where André played for Fluminense too so no surprise he's doing it for Wolves too.

Thanks.

Why are you guys discussing Scott in the Gomes thread? It’s confusing

Massively disappointing - Atletico were our only real hope of offloading Ugarte for good money.

45m for a player getting relegated is crazy money tbf. We don't have that type of money to spend on a squad player right now. Prioritize Tchouameni, then see what's available for the 2nd and 3rd midfield signings.

Another offshoot of that deal — they’re probably off the market for Ederson…

I don’t think he’s high up our list but if we can’t get our main targets I can see us falling back on him if we need to.

He might reject if he fancies himself for the big leagues - Atletico were the perfect team for him. Italy might take him, but offer 50p and half a Twix unless Napoli get involved.
Atleti aren’t stupid he’s not good enough for them. His best hope is the slower paced Serie A. Otherwise Turkey. Jorge Mendes is his agent so am sure will sort something out

They bought Conor Gallagher!

He might fancy it, but if he’s here on September 1st and Turkey is the only window open…

And if it’s Italy, which has been mooted, I’d bet my house it’ll be a bloody loan with an option/obligation because it always is!

I agree. I like Gomes, would gave been content with him as third midfielder few days ago, not for that price though, £30-35m rumoured was good value...way things changed, really think theres a chance we get tchouanemi AND Baleba...thats about as good as we can get...i wouldnt even be concerned about a third if that happens...they can play together too i think and then mainoo plus a couple of youngsters....add mateus mane and its almost tge ideal summer rebuild

Very frustrating to see him join another side for a pretty reasonable fee, he'll be fantastic for Simeone no doubt.
