Joao Neves: PSG watch

Was basically campaigning for him in full muppet mode in his transfer thread, but once PSG were involved, it was game over.
INEOS give this guy a contract

I remember people here using the same narrative that he is too young, plays in the Portuguese league, etc

No risk, no reward.

There's always gonna be people like that.
Most of us know that players from Portugal do well in the premier league.
I mean, one of our greatest players is and so is our current captain.

8 goals and 13 assists and one of our key players ‍

Wasn’t a great deal for 100m+.

Neves on the other hand…. quality player who will fit in any system under any manager, and 60m was a very reasonable fee.

Not really surprised he's done well at PSG tbh

I watched a good few of his games when he was at Benfica the season before.

He really impressed me,(I mentioned on here at the time) not just the quality but his tenacity and high work rate and movement off the ball.

The talent was obvious.

As usual on here last summer there were a few naysayers, some even writing essays on why we shouldn't go in for him

He's still very young. It'll be very interesting to see if he can develop and take his game onto a higher level in the next couple of years...

Great player. Pretty clear that Uncle Jorge had a deal in place with Campos to take him to PSG last summer and nobody else ever had a chance.

Cost the same as likes of Mount, Casemiro and Ugarte, we really know how to pick our midfielders

Might be one of the best hattricks ever

Man, he would have literally been PERFECT for us. Such a fantastic player.

Getting us to subsidise his signing by paying stupid money for Ugarte has to be the best piece of transfer business of the decade by any team.

That we gave them the money to sign him by signing Ugarte is depressing.

Should have been such a straight forward transfer given how close he appeared to Bruno and Dalot while playing for Portugal. Wasn't even that costly all things considered. I assumed we didn't have the money to buy him initially in the window but then we paid a similar price for a much inferior player in Ugarte anyways. Such baffling business.

Not just scoring a hat trick, he had a whopping 101 touches and had completed 85/88 passes attempted with 97% accuracy. Still only 20 and is not afraid of getting on the ball at all and can take care of it. Which I'd say is a necessity for any midfielder.

The perfect midfielder for our team and we didnt sign him. It was obvious he was super talented, he stood out at U20 level. I can’t think of what our decision makers saw in Ugarte or Casemiro that they didn’t see in him.

Him and Vitinha, Portugal has the capacity to be world champions, don’t feck it up Martinez.

What a game by Neves.

Probably the best hattrick I've ever seen (but I have bad memory for football goals), Rivaldo's against Valencia is the only other one I can think of, but his 2nd goal wasnt as good as the other 2 or Neves' 3.

Glorious.

When I saw the highlights the Barcola goal looks so weird. The defender clearly has an opportunity to clear the ball before Barcola gets the shot off and he just watches it.

Anyhow, shite that we didn't get Neves.

As sure of a thing as there could have been with regard to the likelihood of him achieving his potential as he was already playing at such a high level in benfica.

Bizarre how psg has such a straightforward go at him.

How? Who contests directly with state clubs?

Aren't the days of psg handing out obscene contracts over? A Google search result yielded that he's on 150k euros a week, a reasonable number all things considered which would many many a prestigious club could have gave psg a contest in their endeavor to sign him.

We gave Sancho double that for example (cl qualification included but still)

They paid for him upfront all in one and added a Renato Sanches cover loan on top as a sweetener. The way they pay is practically impossible for normal clubs to compete with.

We run away as far as possible from any midfielder who can ever get remotely close to the ability of controlling a game. It’s in our DNA. The basketball team of football.
Our fanbase is the same way. Branded this guy as a luxury player, while Ugarte is what United need. We always seem to want to prioritize lesser players because it's what we need. Our fanbase loves grafters in the middle of the park.

I was so excited when we were lonke dwith him. We ended up up signing Ugarte and gave PSG the money to sign him.

We probably had no chance anyway, but still... what could have been.

Fair enough as I forgot about that part of their modus operandi.

Although I do reckon it could be countered by swaying the player itself and them insisting upon a specific club and nothing else, whether we or any other were in position to do so with regard to neves I don't know.

The thing is, he is also a grafter but one who's brilliant on the ball and is also very good at heading it

I am pacified by the fact that there was no hope for anyone but the other oil club to land him, but still, arguing for pages and pages in his transfer thread that this kid is “the one” and that it was very, very obvious before PSG came in and ruined the dream of getting him in here, feels like one of the most surreal experiences I’ve had on the caf.

These sure thing players, particularly him and Kvara, are like shooting stars - you should see them and instantly know they are special and destined for the very top. At the rate Neves is going, he’s going to have a phenomenal trophy haul and ratio of brilliance per season those trophies were won in. He’s already a top 3-5 midfielder on the planet; all that’s really left is challenging Pedri and Vitinha for #1, but that may be beyond him.

I think its a case of he's part of the best midfield duo, like xavi and iniesta, and will dominate football for a while.
