Joao Palhinha

I feel he’d be an upgrade on Ugarte. If we could get him for 10-15m as a rotation option I wouldn’t be against it depending on salary and contract length.

Signed alongside a young prospect in that position it would be decent squadbuilding.

Thought he was great at Fulham, would definitely have taken him when he left to go to Munich but feels as though we should swerve this now, unless its a loan

Wouldn’t say no. I don’t hold him not succeeding at Bayern against him, but I’d probably hope he’d be a tad cheaper at that age. He was great at Fulham. Not sure why so many don’t want him, purely because of age and price?

I thought he looked a good player at Fulham. Can’t say I’ve seen him too much outside of that.

Whether we want to be buying him and having him on a contract until he’s 33 or so, I doubt.

If it was a loan (given how far our budget needs to stretch this summer) then that might be a different conversation.

Loan with an option please. No one is bailing us out from our mistakes. We bailed Psg from their Ugarte mistakes. Should have been a loan with an option.

Don't see the point. His form at Fulham was better than Case & Ugarte's, but his form at Bayern wasn't. He turns 30 next month, so he's not a long term prospect to invest in. Neither Casemiro nor Ugarte doesn't look like leaving, so we already have enough bodies there. He might be incrementally better than what we have if he can recover his Fulham form, but we'd still be looking for a long term prospect there. I'd rather leave the money in the pot for another year to be honest.

Because we have a limited budget and a minor variation on Ugarte shouldn't even be in our top 30 priorities.

Or that's my reason, anyway.

I'd say no. Will be 30 when the season starts. Don't want another Casemiro situation on our hands, even if it wouldn't be quite as expensive.

Thought he might be a good option under ETH in his system, given the expectation he put on his midfielders to protect his back line. Not sure he's the right player at all in this system though.

Defensively though, his stats were through the roof for Fulham every year. Won the ball more than any other midfielder and even most defenders, if I recall correctly.

Not a significant upgrade on what we already have - not for me

It better be false. Of all the midfielders to be interested in. Why are we allergic to players who value possession of the ball?

Need more technically proficient midfielders, people that can progress the ball. The Vitinhas and Neveses. Both excellent on a technical level and still get stuck in

If it’s just a “destroyer” Ugarte is still around

No point in this whatsoever since we have Ugarte.

The system doesn't need a flat out defensive mid, it needs dynamism and players who can pass.

No. He's not enough of an upgrade on Ugarte and is the wrong age bracket. We already have destroyers; we need a midfielder who can look after the ball.

he is not good, he is just an enforcer, not that technical, and actually slow, he is ok for a mid level team (yes we are one now because we have low level players like him), we must move on from such players, Cunha & Mbeumo are not only good physically, but also technically sound, which elevates the squad's quality, we need to move in the same direction.

Similar profiles, with Palhina a bit better technically, in tight spaces plus greater range of forward passing between lines. Not by much though so not a big of an improvement. Agree the Vitinhas would be much better profile but how many are out there not costing a bomb?

Another fear is that leaving the hardest, most intense league out there, then coming back at 30years of age is almost like moving to Saudi then come back. Except he would at least be playing regularly in Saudi while in Buly he hasnt started for ages.

I’m not a scout nor do I have access to a global scouting network of full-time and part-time employees getting paid to watch football 24/7, so apologies if I’m not able to readily produce names that wouldn’t cost a bomb - the club however; should be able to find - at least - a handful of players with a similar profile to Vitinha - even if not as matured in their development.

Personally, I’d much rather spend the quoted amount on one or two high potential players of the aforementioned profile than on a marginal 30 year old Ugarte upgrade - though it seems we’re in agreement regarding the overall sentiment

Scouting and data analytics departement has been almost dismantled recently so its Berrada and Brailsford looking for concrete names on redcafe transfer forum. Similar to Woodward in the past.

If Lobotka was 3-4 years younger, and not suffering muscle injuries on a monthly basis I would suggest him, would cost under 30m too. As close a type of mid as Vitinha you can get.

I think there's absolutely no chance of any interest from United. Ineos have been extremely critical of United for pursuing these kind of signings in the past (30+ years of age, big wages, no resale value) - see Ratcliffe's past comments on Casemiro. While the initial fee here would undoubtedly be smaller than the Casemiro deal, the salary will be substantial and I cannot see any world in which the new recruitment team signs-off on a deal like this for a player this age. The story in the Mirror is almost certainly untrue.

On loan or for free, sure, but clear Ineos want young players. Think I am right in saying (?) the oldest players they have signed have been Maz/Cunha at 26.
