Joao Palhinha

As long as it's around the 20 million mark and he's paid a fairly reasonable wage I can't understand why we'd be against it. He's experienced, good on the ball and a physical presence.

We've had some fantastic 30 plus signings in the past. Just because we paid 60 million and 350k a week to Casemiro doesn't mean all these deals are bad.

He's Ugarte except taller, worse on the ball and 6 years older. Baffled that anybody is entertaining the idea.

We would get destroyed even more in midfield.
Can't see a reason why? We need to improve on Casemiro, and Palninha was one of the best CDMs in the league, we also can not rely only on Ugarte for that role. The two of them for that specific role, and a good B2B partner and we are set for that department.

Is he really any better than Ugarte on the ball? Not sure he's gonna have the legs needed for the PL now - this should only be considered as a loan + option to have a look at him and add an extra option at DM, by no means should United take a punt on a permanent deal.

As backup? Maybe, even at his prime here he wasn't amazing, I don't think he can keep up with it anymore. I would rather a younger player with legs.

Before his move to Bayern

He averages 0.27 progressive carries per 90 (putting him among the bottom two per cent of Premier League midfielders), 3.2 progressive passes per 90 (bottom 13 per cent), and 3.2 passes into the final third per 90 (bottom 32 per cent).

Also read somewhere that on average only 1 in every 5 passes were forward.

I would stick with Ugarte.

Palninha? I think he was top notch at what he was was supposed to do. For a small fee as I said 15m euros, I would have him as an option.

Scared. Moving forward by taking ten steps back, or even cementing ourselves as a bottom half of the table team.

Improving the physicality is fine but the solution isn’t to build a team of limited wrestlers. We still need quality and technical excellence regardless.

Thought he was great at Fulham, would definitely have taken him when he left to go to Munich but feels as though we should swerve this now, unless its a loan

I feel the same. Would have loved to see him sign for us when he left for Bayern. Not played much for them.

Apparently he is on £160k a week base at Bayern. Not a huge wage if we can get him on the cheap.

I would be really happy with this signing. Can't understand why others wouldnt be. We don't have the budget for world beaters in every positon. If the price is 20m then that is good for someone that has proved himself at premier league level.

We just need capable midfielders that can get up and down and pass the ball to the front 3 and wait for the magic to happen.

He is not good enough and easily worse than Ugarte.

29 years old. DMs start to drop off when they hit their early thirties. Would just be another Casemiro situation. Better to go shop in M&S for a Baleba than B&M for Palhinha.

Harsh that they have that award.

He was injured for a large chunk of the season. Not easy to push Goretzka and Kimmich out of the Bayern side on the back of an injury.
To be fair, most players abstained from voting for flop of the season but Palhinha was the majority winner (loser). But yeah, what an award.

It should have been very easy to push Goretzka out of the team, as he is abysmal and we desperately want to sell him. That Palhinha wasn't even able to accomplish that, is not a good sign. He will likely enter the next season as our midfielder number 5, behind Kimmich, Goretzka, Pavlovic and Bischof. One of our worst ever transfers.

Are we talking about the same player?

This can't be real, your board can't be that dumb. Palhinha is good but he literally plays the only position you are set with Casemiro and Ugarte. You basically need players at every position but DM and your board go and chase Palhninha

According to the Mirror, bastions of accuracy.

Wasn't he injured for a good potion of the season though ? 8 game stretch from week 11 to 18. Not easy to come to a new club, start to settle then miss time.

I will bow to your judgement, as you obviously watch more Bayern than anyone on here, but I thought he was excellent at Fulham.

Is there a technical reason he was "One of our worst ever transfers"?
Too slow? Bad passer? What was the issue?

It's astonishingly bad business by Bayern that they let Ryan Gravenberch go and signed this player a year later.

I don't even think you can rate his time here, because he was either injured or sat on the bench.

We signed Palhinha before we appointed Kompany. And its obvious that Kompany prefers midfielders that are better with the ball.

Barely played, when he played, he was "okay" i think. He played it very save with the ball and didnt want to make any mistakes. Some good tackles, a very harsh sending off, yeah, thats probably his season.
I wished he would have had more chances to prove himself but as is said its obvious that he is absolutely not what Kompany prefers in midfield so i think its the best for both sides if he moves on in the summer.

I think Palhinha would have been an excellent player for Tuchel (we were VERY close to sign Palhinha in the summer of 2023, because Tuchel didnt want to play Kimmich in midfield and preferred a "holding six") and Gravenberch would have been an excellent player for Kompany.

Well, shit happens.

But i hope that the signing of Tom Bischof will make us forget this.

We have Tuchel to thank for this. Palhinha was his desired new number six, as our squad apparently didn’t have one before. Gravenberch, according to his brilliant judgement, is a number ten.

I can’t honestly say I’ve watched him since he went to Bayern but I’ve seen people say his legs have gone, we’ve already got Casemiro in that regard so don’t need another. If we’re looking at a cost friendly back up/alternative then Anguissa at Napoli would be a better option as he’s on a free and I read a couple of months ago he wants to leave.

He was injured for a while. But whenever he played, it became quite clear that he doesn’t have a place within our team and setup and should move on. With him, we’re basically down a man in possession. And for that, we already have Goretzka.

I doubt the link is true, there's quotes from Amorim out there about the benefits of moving on from Ugarte and Palinha to a more complete midfielder in Hjulmand.

Can you direct to them? That would be even more damning for Ugarte.
