Joao Palhinha

This can't be real, your board can't be that dumb. Palhinha is good but he literally plays the only position you are set with Casemiro and Ugarte. You basically need players at every position but DM and your board go and chase Palhninha
Reliable?

Can you direct to them? That would be even more damning for Ugarte.

Something I read ages ago when he first joined no clue where . He wasn't putting them down just being his honest self in their strengths and that Hjulmand was a more complete player.

Given how he's used Ugarte so far I think it tracks that it's still his thinking that he's primarily a destroyer. If Amorim is still here next summer no doubt we go for a complete midfielder.

He would be an absolute beast of a midfield destroyer! The problem being, that it would be our midfield he'd destroy. Avoid at all costs.
Himself, Casemiro and Ugarte playing sideways and backwards passes to each other like to rugby players would be quite something. Reminiscent of the Joe Parkinson/Barry Horne/John Ebbrell "Dogs of War" Everton midfield.

Really important we don't settle when it comes to midfield targets this summer. A destroyer approaching 30 years old is not the profile we should be looking at.

Was incredibly highly rated at Sporting and Fulham, having had a read around he seems to have similar shortfalls to Ugarte.

I don't even think you can rate his time here, because he was either injured or sat on the bench.

We signed Palhinha before we appointed Kompany. And its obvious that Kompany prefers midfielders that are better with the ball.

Barely played, when he played, he was "okay" i think. He played it very save with the ball and didnt want to make any mistakes. Some good tackles, a very harsh sending off, yeah, thats probably his season.
I wished he would have had more chances to prove himself but as is said its obvious that he is absolutely not what Kompany prefers in midfield so i think its the best for both sides if he moves on in the summer.

Fair comments.

Probably unfair then for @HTG to say he was "One of our worst ever transfers" if Kompany didnt want him and he was signed prior to Kompany coming in.

One of the key reasons we plunged into prolonged mediocrity was our habit of signing the wrong players on the wrong side of 30. Falcao, Schweinseger, Sanchez, Casemiro, Varane… the list goes on. Theres zero chance United will repeat those mistakes and I am confident the Paulinha rumors are just clickbait nonsense.

Even in the current squad there are at least two worse transfers with Boey and Zaragoza.

With Palhinha you can at least see what our scouts and people in charge saw in him.

Nope. It was one of our worst transfers, because Kompany was actually already there when we bought him and clearly doesn’t rate him at all. So we spent 50 millions on a specialist player, to join us, while we just got ourselves a new coach, about to play precisely the kind of football Palhinha doesn’t fit.
It’s been an insanely bad transfer on our part.

I never understood the forum high rating of him. Yes he makes a lot of defensive actions but that's it, very little on the ball. Fred and McT had a significantly better passing range playing deep midfield and were ripped to bits, yet fans convince themselves that guys like Palhinha is the answer.

Utd have had tacklers in midfield traditionally but they have generally been good footballers as well. Someone like Nicky Butt was leagues above guys like Ugarte/Palhinha on the ball.

If we can get Palhinha on loan it would be a no brainer. with Bruno in midfield if we sign Mbeumo, we are going to need the other midfielder to be a crazy tackling beast. Ugarte won't be able to keep up the entire season and will have a donut shaped hole in our midfield. Casemiro just does not have the legs for the amount of work that will be needed and Collyer is still not ready to be a full time starter as the sole tackling machine in midfield. Ideally, Bruno should not be in midfield at all.

A major problem for this kind of player is that the game has moved on, so even in his years as a pro, if you go back to 2016 through to 2020, a destroyer passing the ball on to a much more creative player wasn’t abnormal even if it was fading away. In the last few years, however, top teams don’t play like that anymore and specialist destroyers who can’t do much else are being phased out, which is exactly why PSG got rid of Ugarte and replaced him with what top teams want in a defensive midfielder with Joao Neves.

Players like Palhinha are directly targeted and pressed because they are terrible on the ball and in getting rid of it smoothly and efficiently, so his one strength actually becomes a weakness because he’s the one you want to isolate in the first place. Aside from this, he’s useless against low blocks as he has no means of breaking them down and cannot pass through the lines efficiently either.

We already have an anchor of that type here, two even.

Have that discussion with @BayernFan87 then who feels Boey and Zaragoza are worse.

I dont really care, tbh. Its a Bayern problem!

I would love to read these quotes as well.
This is what chatgpt gave me

“Depois o Hjulmand. Andámos ali a chorar pelo Palhinha, depois chorámos pelo Ugarte. Com o Hjulmand, o scouting teve de mostrar umas três vezes que aquele era o jogador certo e o mérito é todo deles. E eu diria… adoro o Palhinha, adoro o Ugarte, mas diria que o Hjulmand é o jogador mais completo daquela posição. Eu sei que vão ficar chateados comigo. Certamente que já não sou o seu treinador preferido (risos)”

“Then Hjulmand. We were there crying for Palhinha, then we cried for Ugarte. With Hjulmand, the scout had to show us three times that he was the right player and all the credit goes to them. And I would say… I love Palhinha, I love Ugarte, but I would say that Hjulmand is the most complete player in that position. I know they will be upset with me. I am certainly not their favorite coach anymore (laughs)”

We're in a tough situation.

We technically have 2 DMs but one of them is poor on the ball, and the other can't run.

We would have to be very optimistic to go into the season with the same midfield options as this and expect to have a good season. So we can either get a partner for Bruno, which would be a more defensively minded player rendering Ugarte and Casemiro pointless. Or we can get a Bruno alternative but they'll just be sat on the bench because Bruno isn't getting dropped.

And where Mainoo fits into this I don't know, well he probably doesn't fit, but people aren't willing to accept that yet.

Palhinha is not the answer either way.
