Very good display by him today. I have to say that I'm a fan. Always rated him more than McNeil. Not sure if he will make it here, but I would definitely keep him as a back up in case Rasmus get's injured.

Can't say if he improved or not as I've not seen much of him but that is what caught my eye about the goal. It was a normal run then the ball was played and he became rapid.
Yeah he is quite gangly so the impression when he played for the youth team was that he was using his height and size to bully and score goals, but would be found out at senior level. Pleasantly surprised.
Always liked his workrate and movement whenever he features in our preseason matches. Certainly positions himself better than Hojlund. Main issue I recall was his composure/finishing. If Ruud can improve that, we have a decent squad player for the season.
TBF I don't think he has enough about him to make it here. Sounds harsh but despite scoring for me he showed less technique than Wheatley who is a few years younger and also faces an uphill battle to make it here.
A bit random but I've been thinking this recently. The striker position at big clubs is so overly scrutinised and so much money spent on it that it's so bloody hard to break through as a youth player.
I think if you're a youth player at a big club you want to hope you are a full back as that seems easier to break through than any other position, centre back second.
I like him and he is a natural finisher. Not too many of them about.

It's always been that way, really. Aside from maybe goalkeepers, it's the position that is simultaneously the most heavily scrutinized, and the most confidence-dependant on the pitch. And in both cases, your only way in - even at a club lower down the table or, in many cases, in a lower division - is some sort of biblical injury crisis.
There have been many great strikers who probably wouldn't have gotten a chance to break through if they hadn't started their senior careers on the wing, which kind of tells you just how good you have to be if you're a specialist number nine.

I unfortunately wront Hugill getting a chance at United after his relatively poor loans.
I imagine once we get Hojlund/Zirkzee/Rashford properly on the tour, he'll be looking at another loan/sale away from us.
I think as @M Bison said, one of the youngsters will be our 3rd choice striker this season - if you discount Rashford that is - and I just can't see it being good for Hugill's career for him to be that right now. He needs to play regularly at 20 and now he's had the taste of Championship football, I imagine he'll want that too.
I predict him getting a league 1 team on loan/sale.

Think if we sign that kid from Arsenal that scored 10 goals against Liverpool, it’s pretty much done for him here.
As it should be. We should be making snappier decisions about our academy. If a player doesn't look like a potential star after being here two years or more they are going to get overtaken by other players.
The fact that noone at the club had faith in either Hugill or McNeil to make the step up over the past two years speaks volumes.
I’m not so sure the difference between him and Wheatley is a big as some think. Ethan’s recent improvements over last season and the poor form of the under 21 team Hugill was a part of has maybe skewed perception. A year ago I would have said Joe was the more composed and clinical but Wheatley has improved very well in both areas.

He needs a loan. Wheatley will benefit more from being third choice.
A year ago I would probably have agreed with you as both seemed to have their own issues but Wheatley surprised me and did very well. I’ll wait and see though as both are still under 20 and I’m an optimist.
His face is really small.
Joe is a much better finisher currently and is a more fox in the box kind of striker, but Wheatley has a much better all-round game, can pass really well, hold play better, decent dribbling to make space for a shot, but inconsistent finishing, can score the hard chances but sometimes will just hit it straight at the keeper.
Wheatley playing ahead of Hugill with the 1st team probably shows the club rate him bit higher too.

Maybe he's not progressed as much as people expected, but not everyone is first team ready at 19. Ivan Toney didn't play top flight football until he was almost 26, same with Jamie Vardy. Let's see how he goes.

Checking the Wigan Twitter updates during the game, I think it said Joe Hugill gave away the penalty that Tranmere scored the winner from (after it was initially saved).
Which is a bit of a shame after such a well taken debut goal. But hopefully that's the first of many.

He looks like a confident and natural finisher.
Also, Its does seem like the young forwards we've signed for the youth teams in recent times do seem to have familiar traits to one another. Hugill, McNeil, Wheatly and now Chido all 6ft and all largely target men.

If by target men you mean playing back towards the goal, holding the ball up and building attacks from there, I wouldn’t say any of those four are target men. Hugill probably the closest.
Wheatley can play that role but he’s much more versatile and can affect the play by coming deeper or drifting out wide too.
McNeill is a press machine who’s pretty quick but lacks the size and strength to hold the ball up against CBs. He is decent at making runs behind the defense and using those spaces behind CBs and FBs.

Sounded like he had a quiet game in their 0-0 draw at the weekend and went off after an hour. No mention of an injury at the time but I imagine he must he injured or unwell to be out the squad entirely? Unless they're giving him a full rest while it's his first senior loan and it's a busy schedule?

He came off with a dead leg last Saturday and hasn’t trained since. So nothing serious but those injuries can be painful.

Missed the last game and isn't in today's squad, so I've googled him and there was a story a few days ago that he'd gone back to United to have a scan on an ankle ligament injury and it's worse than they thought and sounds like he'll miss a few matches.
Maloney (Wigan's manager) was praising him for the work rate he'd shown up front so far, and saying he asks a lot of his strikers. So sounds like he's doing OK as a hard working striker, even though he hasn't been scoring many for them.
