Frustrating as he's one of the few FWD options that was attainable and decent. He's certainly not rubbish. He'll surprise a lot of people at Juventus.

Definitely not rubbish at all, got a very good scoring record consistently for club and country over the last 4-5 years and is only 25.

Very much ready for his step up and I'm betting he takes well to Juve.

This club feels above free agents and it is weird. Would be an addition.

Yup, scored against a lot of quality teams in Europe for Lille. His record is impressive given the club he plays for.

I’d have taken him but I’m not that moved. Watkins sounds a lot better.

Anyway David’s numbers seem quite good. 15+ goals in Ligue 1 (averaging 18,5) over the last 4 seasons. And he’s also been improving his assists numbers. Good stats in Europe as well (10 UCL goals this year)

Curious how it works at Juve. Which is usually a very tough club for strikers.

I'm surprised Juve had a free run at him, on a free he's a no brainer. I kinda expected Inter to go for him, he's basically Lautaro-lite and is better suited to a 2men attack.

Just to reiterate, for all of those moaning about us missing out on David.

He was never, ever coming here so there was nothing to miss out on. Leaving aside his openly stated lack of interest in the Premier League and preference for continental leagues such as La Liga and Serie A, he had the option as a free agent to draw up a shortlist of what he wanted from his next club. Top of that list is he wanted to be playing Champions League football next season and so our name would never have made it onto his shortlist. It is also worth pointing out that despite the "free" status, the signing package he was looking for was around 30M and I am confident I could find a better striker than David for that much, anyone who watched his Gold Cup displays over the last few weeks could tell you he would be a flop in the Premier League.

He’d have been a pointless signing for us and just been another player on huge money we’d want to move on and get stuck with.

He’s much better suited to Serie A than the Premier League and he’s made the right decision in going there.

You’re not finding any 25 year old striker better than Jonathan David for anywhere near 30m. Liam Delap cost that and he’s easily worse and he only was the cheap due to a release clause even.

Not to mention the additional free agent bonuses will be nowhere near 30m extra anyway.

Liam Delap is comfortably better than David. The Athletic reported the signing bonuses he was looking for as 30M but if you know better then fair enough.

Who could you get that's better for 30m?

That was a buyout clause though. Also he's no longer available.

Ridiculous to let them get him unless we intend to go for kolo Mauni once his loan expires. We really need to step our game up when it comes to signing strikers.
There was no letting them get him. He made clear he was not interested in a move to the PL months ago and also would not consider anyone not qualified to play in the Champions League. I can criticize the club for many things they do in the transfer market but in this case you might as well be mad that we didn't sign Mbappe.

He didnt say that. He said he always a fan of La Liga growing up and that he'd prefer to go there if given the choice, english media twisted it by saying he didnt want to go the PL but he just talked about La Liga and eventually is going to Serie A. He actually said he was open to every top league as long as it's a top club last summer.

This is obviously subjective, we all rate players differently, but limiting it to players who are not obviously unavailable and fit the age profile that INEOS wants I would say any of Mika Biereth, Georges Mikauadze, Amine Gouiri or Maximilian Beier are better. There are others but Schick for example is too old for INEOS and Strand Larsen just completed his move to Wolves permanently and so is off the market. For just a little more than 30M sterling you could probably get Kolo Muani, Juve are negotiating around the 40-45M Euro mark but may cool their interest with David signed and he would be a clear upgrade for us.

Both these things I know, I did not bring up Delap, the other poster did. I just clarified that even now Delap would run rings around David.

You are right but also those comments track with previous statements he has made regarding PL football which indicate that he is not a fan and would probably have only taken a PL move if no other options were on the table. He had approaches from both Spurs and West Ham at the end of the season and dismissed them out of hand but was happy to entertain negotiations with several Serie A clubs which tends to underscore that point. The Athletic commented that we were not pursuing him because we had received confirmation from his camp that he did not want to join a team that could not offer CL football which makes sense considering he had his pick of offers from clubs who could give him that.

Even if he was a flop here I felt we should sign him because we could have sold him for some money in the future.

It's all depends on the wages though.

If his wages on a new contract were low then we would be able to sell.

However I heard that David wanted a high wage contract - which might leave us with a Sancho/Rashford scenario where the players wages outshine the players own footballing ability.

If the finances are as bad as advertised here not sure why you're not trying to make an opportunistic signing like this. Maybe they did and he just had his eye set in Juve or maybe they're confident they can get Gyokeres.
