There will always be exceptions, but the Premier League is the most physically demanding League in Europe, and by quite some distance, and everything is set up in Germany for Bayern to be successful so settling in without the pressure to perform always helps.

You can't buy every flavour of the month as the days of stockpiling are well and truly over, though somebody obviously forgot to tell Chelsea.
I think the pressure on Alphonso Davies was massive at Bayern. He was coming from a league which europeans do not rate at all and were waiting for him to fail, he doesn't play for a highly rated national team, and he has changed position, all while being expected to settle in asap in a new country and play at a high level. Re Jonathan David, I'm not sure he is flavour of the month, most people haven't heard of him, and any assocation on this thread with us is minimal. Re stockpiling, we aren't and won't. Ole has made it clear he wants young, hungry players that can improve, players like this fit the bill. No-one is saying we must buy him, certainly our scouting dept should be looking at him. My point is the days of us not being sure of a player and then waiting are gone.If along the way we pick up a younger player and he doesn't work out so be it. Players like this aren't going to cost a fortune in today's market.

Depending on the price, he might be a risk that could pay off huge. Look at Arsenal and Martinelli.

Being Canadian there is nothing I would like more than to see David at United. He's quick, has good off the ball movement and is a good finisher. He is also young and would come at a reasonable price. I wanted to suggest him before but didn't want to seem biased to a fellow Canuck.

I had many of the same thoughts. I've praised Alphonso so much that I thought I might come across as blindly Canadian, but I agree. From what I've seen of David with the national team, I have a strong sense he'll do well at the higher levels. I'm not quite as sure as I was about Davies (I had no doubt the latter would make it, and I'm still sick to my stomach that it wasn't at United), but it's close.

If he's so good we should buy him take this low cost/low risk gambles now while the player is in a lower league. If we wait for him to go into another team then we'll be talking about 50-60M transfers, right now we can get him for maybe 10-15M its worth the punt.

Ideally we could buy him and loan him back so he can continue his development.

25m has already been turned down.

He also has no desire to be bought and loaned.

Ok so not so low risk then, havent watch him enough to know if he's worth the gamble or not so I wont comment based on that quotation.

I think we should introduce a policy of stockpiling the best promising youngsters like this guy.

We could even have around half a dozen out on loan at any given time to see how they do.

If we did get the player for around €25m I doubt we’d lose money even if he didn’t make it at United.
I like this idea. As if he couldn’t do a better job than half of what we have. We are missing good squad players.

His value is what the market will pay. Look at Wesley at Villa, signed for 22 million quid from Brugge. David has a better goal scoring record than him.I think the Gent DOF is trying to drum up interest and create a bidding war, as he should. They claim they turned down 25 million euro in Jan, maybe they did, I'd have my doubts on that. Typically players like this go to the bundesliga and they typically don't pay the huge transfer fees. But you get PL teams in the mix, even smaller ones and that price shoots up. They need to cash in on him this summer though for maximum return. The players agent has publicly said he's ready to make the move to the next level. The player himself has said publicly for interested parties to contact his agent. He's only contracted until 2023, if they leave that move another season, they run the risk of his numbers dropping and the closer his contract is to expiring, clubs will use that as leverage

From an interview yesterday evening:

“The Bundesliga would be a good next step for me. The German playing style is somewhat similar to that in Belgium, playing at high intensity and the higher level is a nice stepping stone. A transfer to another competition is of course also possible, but a lot will depend on the club, their project and my role in it.

Probably end up somewhere like Frankfurt or a replacement for Werner at RBL

Replacement for Haaland I reckon. Rumours starting to build up that all the big boys are going to go for him this summer.

Any update on this? With clubs in weaker leagues in complete financial havoc, we should be able to capture such promising player for a bargain price (which I would consider 20 Million still to be great price for Genk's starting star forward). I think the attitudes of players about which club they want to join should have also changed - I can't imagine joining a financially strong club not to be attractive in the current crisis. After all, they have only ~10 years to make most of their money and that should count for something, pragmatically speaking. Tough times gives a club like United an upper hand.

Its GenT and they are in a very good financial state, one of the best in Belgium. Don't count on a bargain. But 20-30 million is a huge amount for any club in Belgium, of course.

He’s a very promising striker but he’s made clear the bundesliga is his preferred destination. I reckon if Werner leaves Leipzig he could be the man they bring in.

Do you genuinely think he'd turn down United if we came in with a convincing pitch regarding his playing time and development? For Leipzig? Now I'm not saying we would come in with a convincing pitch but if we want him, only a tit like Raiola could stop us getting him over Leipzig.

I don’t think we can make a convincing pitch for him getting playtime at the club. Unless you plan on shifting Greenwood to RW/RF?

Greenwood and Martial will be ahead of him. If I was advising David a move to Leipzig would be my suggestion over United. There won’t be the same chance to play lots of football as a main player at United whereas at Leipzig he can play regular first team football and develop into the kind of player United would start. He’s an excellent talent certainly one of the best in his age bracket but he’s not knocking Martial out of a starting spot and Greenwood has been too good for him to take his role.

Id love him at United but I think we’re the sort of club he’d move to after his first move.

Greenwood isn't a starter here though and we don't have a class right winger so...
David would surely back himself to get game time over Ighalo and James at least you'd think?

Currently our starting XI would be something like this:

De Gea
WB Maguire Lindelof Shaw
Fred
Bruno Pogba
James Martial Rashford

Even assuming we make no transfers in or out other than David he doesn’t start for me in the above lineup.

I’m not aware of David being a winger in fact he’s player more as an AM/CF than anything else. I don’t see a place for him in our side which is crying our for a RW.

He’d get game time as an understudy to Martial potentially but those minutes will likely go to Greenwood who is well regarded. So I just don’t see where he’d fit in at the moment. I’d love to have him but I don’t see it happening as I think we’ll probably focus on a RW more.

Well firstly, at a club like United you don't need to be in the first choice XI to get a lot of games and develop. Secondly, I would think he'd fancy himself to get in that XI ahead of Daniel James. If that means him playing wide I would have thought it's not beyond him. Or the other alternatives would be to play Rashford or Bruno wide right if that were what we wanted to do. Realistically, Lingard, Pereira, Chong and Mata got plenty of games between them last year. He'd surely fancy his chances of playing a significant role unless we sign Sancho or somebody too.

I agree he would get games but I’d imagine at his stage he’d want to start at a club to get more minutes under his belt. He’s not a wide player and we’d be shoehorning a non specialist into a position that needs serious talent. For what’s its worth I think we’ll spend big on a top RW like Sancho for example.

I think that’s why I don’t see United as the best step for him right now I think we’ll have Sancho and with that our back up will be Greenwood for striker meaning David isn’t needed. Unless you want him to play as AM back up but he’s more of a goalscoring midfielder than a creator.

If he’s going to Germany then maybe he goes to Dortmund to replace Sancho ? We could use potential negotiations with him and say to Dortmund we’ll pull out of negotiations with him to give Dortmund a clear shot at him in return for finding a deal for Sancho.

He doesn’t play the same position as Sancho.

And more importantly he isn’t our player, he wants to go to Bundesliga and his camp have expressly said in the past they aren’t interested in jumping to a top PL club. So how do you think it makes any sense that we can somehow use a player we don’t own and who has no desire to join us in a negotiation for Sancho?

He looks a very promising player and him being American born could potentially help him settle into English surroundings alittle better.

He and his reps have indeed made admissions about the German league. But I'm hoping if our football men believe he has the ability to step up to EPL level then we should make a pitch to entice him to United. Maybe a offer from United could sway him.

Why would he settle better in England than Germany?
