Long past the time he could play out wide. It's middle or not at all for him, unfortunately.

Can't fault his effort, but obviously age isn't on his side and we can't play the way Amorim wants with old lads like him in the team.

Was poor, but it's hard to criticise him for it as a 36 year old Jonny Evans should be poor. And he's far from first choice in that position anyway.

He was diabolical, as others have stated worst performance since his rehabilitation at United.

His career's done and the reason is due to the back three. If it was a centre back pairing today I reckon he would have had a good game.

He didn't know when to step up and drop off, left acers of space for his attacker in not knowing how to occupy that position.

i'll give Evans the benefit of the doubt, I'm unsure if he's played a back three consistently in his career but at 36 years old does he have the neuroplasticity to learn? Highly doubtful.

Even in a back three, he doesn’t look up to it but it’s understandable when you realise how old he is now.

Unable to learn at 36? Hope you’re joking

Quite bad today. My main problem was with his distribution actually. He kept hoofing the ball right into the Ipswich midfield despite having passing options. Seems to panic when pressed.

I am not convinced. Like mentioned before, he did all the standard things, just did it on a poor level. Maybe just an odd day off.
Of course it is only one game, but from that one game it looked like he couldn’t really handle that role. I’m not sure what you mean with standard things, but I thought he was overplayed, more out of position than normal, and a bit slow.

If anyone is old enough to remember his last stint at United they wouldn’t be blaming his struggles today on his age. Trying to play in a back three was what ended his United career after all, when he was in his early 20s. Not sure why he seems to find that such a tough system to play in but it’s nothing new, that’s for sure.

That's a joke right? How old are you?
I'm 41, my career as an IT system engineer is practically over.

Left side of a back 3 leaves Johnny very exposed. And there were a few times where he pushed deep into the Ipswich half to press but was turned very easily and left a huge space in behind, and he doesn't have the pace to recover.

Hard to see how he fits into Amorim's plans after this IF Shaw and Martinez are available.

Probably his worst performance simce he's returned.

He'll be sore tomorrow after those run ins with Delap.

Might not have been his best today but he’s still a cracking player. In reality he was signed to be an emergency option, and I reckon from next season onwards he will be a such.

He's a good head though and I would keep him on another year as a 6th choice CB or if he really doesn’t suit the system, see if he’s happy to wind it down as one of those old heads in the u23s.

He won't see much playing time once Yoro, Shaw and Martinez are fully fit. Add Lindelof to the party as well and you've got a younger bunch of players to fill the back three positions. He was only in yesterday due to the fitness of other players and his lack of action during the international break.

He's been a good servant to the club, I'm not going to start being critical of him.

Wouldn't ready too much into his inclusion. Two of what you'd imagine to be first choice CBs were unfit, so I wouldn't expect Evans to be getting too much game time in the foreseeable, especially once we bed in Yoro and Martinez/Shaw are in contention. Maguire too probably.

It was odd seeing him on the left although it probably makes sense — Amorim's central center back pushes forward in midfield and has to be more mobile. Jonny is still a valuable player that's going to play a considerable amount of time for us, I'd imagine, while not being the first (or, sometimes, even the second) option in any given position.

There's a substantial difference between learning and developing intellectually (requirement of your job and most others) compared to the adaptation of an athlete who is declining and in physical regression.

Playing in a back three is different to playing in a back two, Evans is one of the league's most experienced defenders and he looked like an amateur yesterday because he was thrust into a role where he doesn't have the knowledge, positional sense or intuitive capacity to cover.

Just like how there's an essential difference between a wing back and a full back, one could be good at the one role and totally diabolical at the other.

I would have thought that given the criteria of the post people would discern that what I'm saying is not objective to age, but subjective to a declining athlete who plays in a position where the role almost entirely relies on instinct.

There’s a very slim chance he’ll be at the club next season

He had no defenders to play that day but i though he would play him in the middle.

In a three at back Jonny has to be the middle man. Doesn’t have the legs for either side but also has a brain and can pass a ball.

Since his return he has probably been our most consistent performer. I think every club in the premiership would take a Jonny Evans in there squad whether it’s to be an emergency for the topsides or to be the main centre half further down. Great professional and loves our club
