Jonny Evans - Youth Dev Role

Looking after the loans of emerging talent apparently. Good opportunity for him to have an impact as it’s another area we’ve struggled in for a while now bar the odd exception.

What does Jonny Evans actually do?

I really liked Evans as a player, and his return was very useful. Just hope this isn't one of those jobs for the lads things we were doing to often under Ole. We need the best person for every job irrespective of their past history

Another reason we fall behind everyone else. No other team employs or has employed so many ex players. I'm sure there's better people for the role.

Most clubs give chances to former players starting off their non-playing career. It’s not like we’ve made him under 18’s manager. There is no way Fletcher stays through what, four managers, three CEO’s, if he’s not doing a good job.

Come on, that’s not true. Evans takes us to three former players I believe? I don’t have the time or energy to look this up but i can guarantee most big clubs are the same.

Good Move and he's already got a pretty decent support network with his older brother who is already involved in this kind of thing

Yes they do, you just don't see it because you don't support those teams.

Ruben was speaking highly about him so its not a surprise. They have a good working relationship behind the scene I reckon.

Rubén shouldn't have much of an input regarding these matters, in all honesty. He should focus his efforts on coaching the first team (i.e., his area of specialization). Plus, as of right now, he's a bit of a hired gun with no history at the club and not a whole lot of credit in the bank. The technical team should be constructed and replenished by the club's internal hierarchy with medium to long term objectives in mind, potentially spanning a myriad coaches and sets of players. Evans is essentially succeeding Les Parry as a “loan manager”. On paper the appointment makes sense because he was once an academy graduate of Manchester United, was loaned to Royal Antwerp in Belgium, recalled and loaned to Sunderland, and then loaned to Sunderland again, prior to staking a proper claim at first team level. He has intimate and first hand knowledge, which can be invaluable.

In a lot of ways, he will be a trainee sporting director (the exact remit varies from club to club but there are a lot of commonalities). Julian Ward was initially appointed as a loan manager at Liverpool and is now their technical director. Clubs like Arsenal and Brighton (currently Gordon Greer, who played 200+ matches for the club) also have a loan manager. Evans will have to coordinate with Wilcox as well as academy and first team staff. He will have to represent Manchester United while networking with other clubs and their staff (mostly in the Premier League and lower divisions, but sometimes abroad). He will have to chart the progress of loanees and support them. He will have to oversee a portfolio of players, and form judgement on their reintroduction, reloan or sale. Et cetera. Early days yet but depending on his future performance, he could be promoted and rise through the ranks.

Seems like a very level-headed lad with a decent network. Also one who personally experienced a succesful loan that made him ready to contribute to a stacked first team, so maybe he will have an eye for this arena.

As cliche as it is, it's good to have people in the club that know what it's like to play & win for United in the structure and by all accounts Johnny is a model professional. I'm sure he'll do a fantastic job and will be able to pass on his vast experience to the younger players.

Always liked Jonny Evans, nice to see him stay at the club.

This is probably a good move, a good player with a lot of experience across different different clubs.

People say jobs for the boys but I like when we make moves like this. Model professional who knows the club inside out and can pass on knowledge and experience. I know Ferguson was an admirer of Bayern for employing a similar system.

True. But if he has a good opinion of Evans that's an indicator that those people who should decide these matters might agree with that.

Jonny Evans has been appointed head of loans and pathways at Manchester United.
Evans, who is in the final stages of completing his UEFA A Licence, will lead on loans for United’s young players as well as work closely with director of football, Jason Wilcox, and the director of Academy to further enhance processes which maximise individual player development and prepare young talent to perform in the first team.

Confirmed by the club. Great news imo!

It must be mad going from 100k a week to 10 and having to study and become business savvy, corporate.

I’d say it’s a cool job for sure, he’s definitely not in it for the money. I’m sure he could make loads more popping up on tv for a few hours every month

Obviously thinks he’s too good to put the cones out.

Glad to have Evans still around at the club in whatever capacity. Reckon he’d do a good job too, having been loaned out a couple of times. Good age as well to connect with the loanees, they’ll look up to him as well.

I’m curious if this is just for experience or whether he’ll follow an executive/admin path rather than coaching. Similar to Carrick I’ve seen a future in the dugout for him. Either way I’m glad that he has decided to stay and hopefully help contribute positively.

Yeah, Evans has always struck me as a very level headed and intelligent guy. I have the same impression of his wife Helen as well.

I think its a brilliant move... a player that knows what it takes to come through the ranks... play for Manutd and also other clubs.

Very professional and can guide the youngsters

The funny thing is I can definitely see him go towards a more admin path and doing well.

Think it’s a great hire based off his professionalisn, work rate, and being an academy graduate understanding the pitfalls and challenges on the pathway to first team. But is he responsible for scouting potential loan destinations for our players? Or was that someone else?
