I was responding to "fans just want a signing for the sake of it" when quite clearly that's NOT what people want and never want in any signing. No one wants a signing just to have a signing. Do you struggle with comprehension?

Ah yes the classic fan party line of "you've never watched him, you guys just want a signing for the sake of it".

There’s a very good chance any LB we sign is no better than Shaw. Just because we’re bored of him and know his ceiling isn’t world class, doesn’t mean he’s past it. Played all our games last year and we finished third. I can see why people come out with the “signing for the sake of it argument”. If we have to wait for a genuinely quality replacement, so be it. We’d be risking another Telles, Malacia, Regulion. If we want guaranteed upgrades on Shaw we’d have to spend silly money which has also not worked for us much in the past.

We should judge this window on how our signings actually turn out, not which areas of the team we failed to invest in. We’ve done “major rebuilds” in the past and just signed a crop of flops, as some of our rivals have started to do also.

Obviously we can criticise from a high level and say well we should have the scouting and funds and the ambition to try and solve our problems as quickly as possible. But we have to be realistic about where the last 13 years have left us.

No the previous poster makes a valid point and your point wasn’t clear on what you were referring to. You have since clarified it but it read as I initially responded to it. That was my honest take on it.

Agree about shaw and the sentiment youre making.
However i think there were several lb options we couldve signed seen plenty of woyld improve us and we already have a potentially stellar lb we want to play lw....
Then rb there are even more options and even more of a need for me.
FIr me start of this window we needed to improve the quality of our starting eleven in a minimum of 3 positions and needed 8/9 signings.....weve only improved one position, though i think its actually a great signing in baleba.
Im glad we didnt spend silly money on some of the popular good but over rated and worth nowhere near the fees players...majority of which didnt even fit our needs for me.....but no, our failure to address key areas again this summer is absolutey criminal

If Salinas wanted to come, a 16M clause when we can get half that back if he flops, we're not exactly talking about a huge investment.

Also, a 2nd Shaw would be fine for this year if the cost wasn't high. Right now, odds are Shaw gets hurt and we're praying one of Dorgu, Amass or Heaven (who might even be the LCB starter, not like Licha has stayed healthy consistently) can be the starter. And even if not, hard to imagine Shaw playing 2 games a week once the CL starts.

I'll guess the plan is to just wing it and pray this year and sign Raum on a free next summer and either a short term deal for Shaw, or he gets a longer deal from a desperate mid-table or lower Prem side and I guess we hope whoever gets games at LB for us this year (and if it's Dalot or Mazraoui that's a dead end, they aren't LBs) has shown enough to be the #2.

Frustrating we didn't have a Lammens style 20M signing for a young LB who is playing well in a 2nd tier league. Has to be one out there.

You can see how he scored here CIES report and when you have a look at quite a few of those players in the report, they have all subsequently ended up on the likes of Brentford's books. He would have cost a mere 5m more than Thompson.

I really don't know why we have outright refused to properly pursue players outside the prem this summer. They've all seem very much an after thought.

I agree, I think it's more risk aversion than anything. It subsequently makes your budget go no where near as far - especially if you can't sell.
