David De Gea and RVP are by far the stand outs in that list of mediocrity and even they came with caveats. DDG was young and physically underwhelming and Van Persie had an injury history hanging over him. Fergie should have loaded that team with better players knowing he was close to retiring and knowing he would be hard to follow.
I agree that De Gea and RVP were of a higher quality than the others, but Jones, Smalling, Chicharito, Kagawa and Young were all of United squad quality. All have had more than a few very decent periods at the club, and
What do you mean by loading the team with better players? Because the team won the league when he left.
De Gea - Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra, Rafael, Valencia, Jones, Smalling - Carrick, Fletcher, Scholes, Giggs, Nani, Kagawa, Young - Rooney, RVP, Chicharito, Welbeck
There were champions league winners in there. There was more than enough youth and experience. The team was already of a high quality. Most of this team would get into most teams at that time. Yes, some have not realised their potential now, but back then, this team was good, and all it needed was the next stage of progression, with a young LB, a young CM, and a winger.

All that team needed was someone like Matic. A top class centre midfielder at just the right age.
