He needed this pre season I think but I don't see it with this guy as a striker and we have attacking midfielders coming out of our ears.

It's why I don't think Zirkzee is as safe as people think he is. He's been injured a lot since he's been here vs Hojlund who's played a lot of games without rest. The funny part is he'd probably do great if he went to a team like Arsenal as a backup. Arteta would probably like what he could bring as a 9.5

Least optimistic about this guy. Just feel we've seen the best of him already. Granted his best but consistent would be a welcome part of the squad.

He has a very unwarranted reputation on here given the state of his performances for us.

Missing pre-season with this injury I've heard pretty much nothing about is pretty rough for him. Hopefully he can feature a bit in the remaining games but especially if we sign Sesko, will be hard to see him getting enough game time. Behind Cunha, Mbeumo, Amad, Mount and Mainoo for 10's, behind Sesko at 9 if we get him and then just competing with Hojlund for the spot as it is right now. If we don't sign a striker then he'll be fine but I struggle to see his role long term if we do beyond being a random sub, which I'm not sure he'll be ok with.

He has missed a HUGE opportunity this pre-season.

By no means 100% his fault, but last summer he joined and was unfit/overweight and this summer he was injured after one session. Not really the someone Amorim can rely upon.

He hasn't recovered fully from last season injury. This wasnt a fresh injury.....

I'm sure I saw him in one of the United Week 1 videos doing a spinning backheel finish in training haha...fit enough for tricks, but not fit enough for matches I guess.

Still, it adds to the confusion, but I won't moan about the club YouTube channel.

We should cut our losses and send him back packing to an Italian club if we are able to sign another striker. He is never going to make it here with his lack of pace, strength and lackadaisical style of football.

Well this part does seem to be the subject of some conjecture. A niggling hamstring problem that he was able to play through in May but is now keeping him out of games 2 months later. He was seen partying and dancing on vacation and then as mentioned he was competing in small sided games in training sessions during week 1 of pre season which would suggest that at least initially it was believed he was fully recovered. United are one of the least transparent clubs in the world with injuries so it really is tough to know if this is just preacautions with the old injury or if he actually did get a fresh injury during that first week.

He was full on training at the start of pre-season so I doubt the notion that it's the same injury he had last season. Perhaps he's had a recurrence - not great either way.

He actually looked noticeably quicker in the game where he pulled up, particularly the run he was on when it happened, which makes me wonder whether he hardly ever sprints at full pelt, and when he'd actually done so, it ended badly
:(

Going by some direct quotes from him I read else where. It seems he aggravated the previous injury. So they are taking the pre caution to get him fully recovered before any game time

Pictured training today, would be a welcomed addition as he offers different things from the other forwards

Article is pay walled and the club said Zirkzee was not for sale. Is there anything of note in the article?
Weird it wasnt paywalled when I checked it earlier. Basically PSV want a 9 and really like Zirkzee. They havent approched Utd yet but are most likely going to. They think the deal will be complicated financially.
Rik Elfrink is reliable for PSV so it's probably true from PSV's side but most likely not going to happen since Utd doesnt want to sell and the price they'd accept would be out of PSV's range.

No offence to PSV but that reminds me of that Sunderland documentary where their scouts suggested Ibrahimovic.

I see Zirkzee as a number 10 and a back up to Cunha or Mbeumo in that position. When Zirkzee has played as number 9 he has not been better than Højlund.

Last season as a 9 vs this season is different. Cunha and Mbeumo both offer far more goal threat than whatever we put at 10 last season. Now we can play Zirkzee up there and have a good balance. Last season he had nobody running in behind apart from Garna, as Rashford fell out with amorim.

Too bad about his injuries but I am hopeful he has a good season coming up. We have a new attack and he now understands the PL requirements.

He can backup both the #9 and #10 spots which make him quite useful as a squad player.

Zirkzee is like AM9. The less he plays, the greater his reputation with fans.
Agreed, think it's more about his redemption arc/underdog story and being better than Højlund.

He was actually nowhere near good enough last season, few tricks and silky touches do not change that.

I am not sure it’s an underdog story with Zirkzee. More like Hojlund becoming the public villain. Some fans become sick of Hojlund sight, so they developed this “anyone but Hojlund” mentality.

There is no debate when Weghorst is higher in pecking order for Netherland NT, and this is a Weghorst that is past his prime as a prolific scorer for even Bundesliga. That’s how useful Zirkzee is, even for Netherland with the total football philosophy.

Was rubbish last season just not quite as rubbish as Hojlund. I think both will be a lot better this season, just not good enough that we didnt need to sign new players in their positions. Zirkzee should be decent as a rotation option linking up with Cunha and Mbeumo.

He has no business starting but I’m eager to see how he performs with one or two of Mbuemo, Cunha, and Šeško. We’ve seen glimpses of quality last season. He has shown to have good ball control in tight spaces. Let’s see how it works out until January, and if it’s still mediocre, we think of a transfer or loan for him by then.
