I don't believe a sell on would suit Dortmund at all. A 50% sell on wouldn't even be considered if Dortmund's business model is anything to go by.

On the other hand, a sell on clause in a prospective deal to us could be a possibility. But I feel we'd just pay up the compensation in full which would be more beneficial to us.
Yeah, of course, no need for a sell-on if we're buying him. But it would be shrewd by Birmingham to demand that of Dortmund if they refuse to pay what others are willing to pay. Especially if his entourage try to pressure Birmingham into accepting an offer from Dortmund far from what United would be willing to pay.

It hurts me to say but Dortmund is much better for his development than us at moment...
Because Rashford, McTominay, Greenwood and Williams have spent the last few years picking splinters out of their arses? If he picks Dortmund then fair play to him, they're a good side and I admire a young fella for going to another country to broaden his horizons. But let's not act like United aren't right up there with anyone when it comes to developing talent and giving lads their chance.

We'll give Dortmund the money when we buy Sancho. Probably better for us that Bayern are involved because we can negotiate Sancho's price cheaper so the deal can be done quicker.

I see you are a Birmingham fan and you must have watch him week in week out. Without being bias, all of those scouting opinions are spot on in your opinion? That’s certainly a lot of praise there like a young Wayne Rooney would rightfully get at 18

Rooney is an apt comparison in terms of how physically advanced he seems relative to his age. He’s already a ready made midfielder at the premier league level IMO and wouldn’t take much time to adapt to first team football albeit expecting him to go into a top 4 side straight away might be a tad hasty.

From the research I’ve done - his mentality seems excellent and his ability does speak for itself and the description by that scout mirrors my own thoughts.

Quite sad about him not coming here as he seems like such a typical United style CM that Fergie would have loved to develop... very box to box and has a bit of everything but just needs to be moulded. Dortmund isn’t a bad move either and will make him more technically refined if anything but I can certainly see him
Increasing in value and cementing himself in England’s midfield going forward.

Pointless Bayern buying him now anyway; surely just let Dortmund train him up then poach if they need in the future.

If the reports are true he’s gone to Dortmund I’m gutted to miss out on a young English talent but if he’s chose elsewhere time to move on.

Maybe that was the reason for the father's day post too. "Look how happy you were when we were at Carrington."

Pep Clotet: “He has not indicated to me that he has made a decision," said the Birmingham manager.

"I understand as well there are opportunities abroad where the development of the player which is something that must be considered as well.

“I would love for him to keep being here at Birmingham, if not Birmingham as close as possible to the English game because I love the English game."

This thread is a car crash
Apart from the fact which club is the greatestest at developing players I'm shocked about the transfer sums being thrown around. £20-30m for a 16 year old who's out of contract next year? That's crazy, I mean I understand that he's highly rated but such sums used to be the norm for incredibly talented 18-19 years old with international and top level football experience, not someone with 35 games in the championship (impressive nevertheless).
He's out of contract at the end of this month basically.

Keep saying it, it's about the money. Dortmund being sneaky with Birmingham. They're the ones who are gonna lose the most from this if he picks Dortmund.

What they're willing to pay in wages, they'll save on the transfer fee.

I think the kid should stay at Birmingham City for another season then we can go through all this again next Summer.
There is so much mileage in this thread that has not been used yet that can be used next season;
We still have yet to involve Barca and Madrid never mind the newly crowned Chmps of England and then for some hearty laughs we can bring in Sky Italia which is an absolute scream.

As of right now and in the past 5 to 10 years they're not as good as Manchester United and a couple other academies.

They're great at post formation just like Dortmund are, which means talents like De Jong and Eriksen get mistaken as their own academy products which inflates their reputation
this is such an outdated criticism. our academy went down the drain post Van Gaal's stint as the club's sporting director in the early-mid 2000s (around the time our last golden generation with Van der Vaart, Sneijder, etc. broke through).

we then had a decade of completely bland products.

but since the Cruijff revolution with Jonk overthrowing the academy it's been flourishing again.

That last season's team still had De Ligt, Van de Beek, Mazraoui, Blind who were all here from the age of 9-12. The biggest talent of the De Jong, Van de Beek generation was Nouri who was also here from the age of 9 but tragically wasn't part of that team or would have been on the list as well.

Holland just won the U17 euros with a really talented team that had like 7-8 of the 11 starters being from our academy.

There's also a lot of our players being nabbed from us around the age of 16 as well that would have otherwise made it (sometimes instead of the ones we attracted in their place who broke through instead that you're criticising us for)

For example, Donyell Malen left us at 16 for Chelsea. then returned back to PSV and broke through as a Dutch international last season. Dilrosun left us at 16 for City and broke through as Dutch international at Hertha last season. Redan for Chelsea. Hoogewerf recently for you guys. Those were all pretty close to top talents at the time of their departure (dilrosun less so maybe than the others), but you can't really hold that against our academy. imo TFM would have been a great centreback nowadays if he hadn't left us as well.

I still don't understand how he will get 30+ games at Dortmund and have no chance with us.

It's a bit of a doublethink. Dortmund are supposed to be miles better than us as a team but he has no chance of getting games for Utd.

I'd imagine his Dad is trying to strike a deal with BVB that is similar to Haland's where there would be a sell-on clause and he will get a percentage of future sales

He won’t be playing much in place of Bruno or Pogba. I’d imagine he has more of a chance to break into the Dortmund team.

I don’t get the “Dortmund is better for a young player” naritive.

Uniteds track record blows them out the park

Theyre good at taking credit for other clubs work, thats for sure.
Reminds me of when Pogba hit the ground running in Turin and Juve were getting all the credit as if the Italian air awoke something inside of him

They can't compare at all.

The only thing they have going for them is they're a stepping stone club that can offer a good level of football and valuable experience at a young age.

They also are happy to sell for a quick profit and accept release clauses. Other bigger clubs won't do that.

So in a sense they're more attractive to young players because they're not the final destination. I don't think anybody with half a brain would compare Dortmund to us in terms of creating regular professional footballers.

Yeah defiantly this, good shout.
Pique was the worst. We played him at RB in the reserves to improve his on the ball skills and his 1v1s, sent him on loan to Spain with the one caveat that he played as a CDM. He even had a monster game v Barca in that position.
We do all that, he joins Barca and beasts it from day 1 and all we hear is how good the Barca academy was.

Oh my god! You just went there.
There’s no ‘there’ to go to. It’s just obvious. A myth started that Dortmund is a good place for a young player to go and it’s taken as fact.

Hummels aside I can’t really think of a notable youth product who’s touched World Class status.

Are there even many in their team now? United have loads.

Then if you look past Ronaldo and Rooney, we’ve signed teenagers like Martial, De Gea who’ve kicked on here (how old was Wan-Bissaka?)

If Dortmund have a record better than that, then anyone let me know why.

I totally agree, I posted something similar a few days ago and one or two of the German supporting contingent argued the toss with me citing the people on the streets. fecking bizarre.

Dortmund is a club without ambition. If they really want to win the league, they might have gone all out for Hakimi, instead they replaced him with Meunier who is in no means an upgrade over Hakimi. Now they have money to get Bellingham and after few years you know what they are going to do

Thanks for the very informative post. Always enjoy reading these kind of posts. If you had not posted this I would have just gone along with the narrative in this thread and assumed Ajax academy not doing so well and with no context.

I'm not saying that we are not up there with Dortmund but his case he can get more opportunities there, also their style of play is better suited for a youngster. Let him go to develop and buy him in few years.

Why? United is in transistion. Their style of play is better suited for a youngster, like how? Did you watch United this season? He'd have equally as many chances to develop here and would join a bunch of other young players forming our future under Ole. What makes Dortmund a better place to develop and why wouldn't we sign him now when he can improve our team and it would also be cheaper than waiting..

I would like to have him here don't get me wrong. We have Matic, McT, Fred and Pogba if needed. In Dortmund he can be fisrt choice sooner + EPL is more physical (even though he did well so far)
