If they relegated we shouldn't pay a penny more than 30m.
We just shouldn't sign him full stop. He hasn't got the quality to get us back to where we want to be.

I like questions like this. Why spend big to spend big to replace him. But maybe he’s actually good. I’m 50/50

The jury is certainly out, but for every maguire, wan bissaka.. there is a Jota, Wijnaldum etc.. Players who have been identified and fit a system perfectly. Maybe ETH sees that in Phillips.

I think what is important under ten Hag is that us fans need to try and be patient. How amazing would it be for us to have a proper squad all playing to a proper style in 3 years time.. It's going to take work to get there, but that's the ultimate aim. For that to happen, we need to trust the targets that ETH and the new team go for I think

This reeks of ‘We looked at 800 central midfielders across Europe and Kalvin Phillips was the best one!’

Back the Hag. If he wants Phillips then go for it.

He definitely won't want to stay if they get relegated. He's an England international, doesn't matter how much he loves Leeds, he won't be wanting to play in the championship next season, even if it means playing for us 'bitter scum'.

Having said that I'd rather we steer clear.

Strange one this. Surely before briefing the Manchester press pack that we were interested in Philips we should have checked with the player's camp if he'd want to come? I like him as a player but if he's from a Leeds family you can see why he'd have an issue coming to Old Trafford. You would have thought we'd due or diligence on stuff like that before any move was seriously considered.

For Leeds or midtable equivalent, perhaps. Not for a team wanting to win (or get close to) the big prizes.
he was one of englands best players on the way to euro finals?

pretty evident he's far better than leeds or mid table standard. Great engine, good passer and by all accounts a very good personality to have around the dressing room.

 Definitely not going to elevate the midfield to the level the club wants to be at. This has Schneiderlin written all over it but he is still not as good for Leeds as Schneiderlin was for Southampton.
who's the better alternatives? that are available

I don't know which part you don't understand. As per redcafe he is not Man United quality, just like Mane and Van Dijk before.

Yeah, right. Nothing to do with the fact that he's another high energy midfielder like Fred. Glad we've got an intellectual such as yourself to put us right though.

Can't believe ive been so stupid, We should wait til he excels at a different club and then come in with an offer double the size

have you seen our midfield? we absolutely need another high energy midfielder, he's actually very good at screening the back 4 as well as having energy. he's a proper holding midfielder and has a much more consistent and better passing range than anyone of our midfielders bar pogba and he's offkski

Can you imagine Redcafe will approve the signing of Wijnaldum from a relegated Newcastle back then? The response would be

"Definitely not going to elevate the midfield to the level the club wants to be at"
"For Leeds or midtable equivalent, perhaps. Not for a team wanting to win (or get close to) the big prizes. "

We need two midfielders. One needs to be a designated DM and the other needs to be a player who can dictate tempo and spray passes around.

Phillips is more similar to Fred in that he's a high energy box to box player. He can do a job as a DM but we need a specialist one, and frankly a better one than him anyway. There's a reason why Villa and West Ham are the other teams interested - he's a good midtable player but no better.

Our midfield is a joke but that's not a reason to compromise on quality. Recruiting the right player is more important now than ever.

You are really comparing Phillips to Mane and Van Dijk  They were both much better at Southampton than Phillips has been at Leeds. Not to mention the pair of them and Wijnaldum all went into a well functioning Klopp system, which has helped elevate them a level.

Have you not learned from the past how over rated and over hyped English players can be. Honestly what has he done to be highly rated by you? He is not even better than Fred.

Good job we've got full backs as good as Trent and Robertson to get by with a functional midfield, eh?

You have a new structure in DOF/player recruitment and also new manager. Just trust them they will do their job for team building. If they decide to go for a player they must have their reason. Whether it works out in the future it is another story. They got pay big dollars to do their job.

I rate Kalvin Philips highly and I would love him in Arsenal. I am not sure we can afford him.

You'de a fool to think we have made any kind of approach when Ten Hag hasn't even arrived yet.

I don't believe he is guilty of anything yet, still just investigations right or has that been finalized?
Investigations. The police aren’t dropping it yet.
The point is no team is gonna spend 35m+ on someone who is under police investigation. Especially us with the whole greenwood thing going on. So, I think we need to forget about bissouma. United won’t go there
