That was the same optimistic sense I had too. I worry though that this type of midfielder needs to be part of a middle three, and that if we are persevering with this system, Mainoo does not have the attributes to be part of a two. Hopefully thats not the case

I agree, that's why I think Mainoo must improve his defensive positioning and reading of the game, he is already a good tackler and intercepts quite well, if he improves in those areas, that will make him an excellent option alongside a ball-winner/ball-hounder like Ugarte.

I think that's part of our problem overall. Better players allow eachother to play to their strengths and our squad, including good players who can perform well, all have a bit of a fatal flaw at the moment

Shaw, de ligt, martinez - injuries

Yoro, Mainoo, Garnacho - very young players still learning their game

Casemiro - age

None of these are bad players but their current limits amplify eachothers limits

Who needs enemies when you have fans that are on this forum. He's 20 ffs! One year back he was the best midfielder for us and didn't look out of place for the England side at the euros. All of a sudden he's horrible and needs to be sold.

Unbelievable.
So what is wrong in saying that he needs to work on his weaknesses? Because as others have said, defensively he's easily bypassed. I was a big fan of Toni Kross in 2013, many weren't. He was told by Heynckes to work on his defensive game to be a complete midfielder.

Koobie is absolutely lethal on edge of thw box. It's nothing wrong in saying that he needs to improve, if he wants a substantial pay increase.

Exactly, nothing wrong in saying he needs to improve, I feel the same way and he will cuz he's still 20! My comment was more aimed at those saying he's shit and needs to be sold!

Well the only way that selling him makes sense is if his agents are asking for 180-190 pw.

Unlikely to start but still fancy Mainoo to have a say tomorrow. Big game player.

Tottenham 1:0 Man Utd New
Got 5 minutes at the end of the game despite Casemiro, Mount and Fernandes stinking the place out.

Been totally mismanaged and I'll be disgusted if we try to force him out to raise money for a manager that doesn't know what he's doing.

No idea what Amorim's issue is with him but he's been treated so poorly.

From an outstanding final last season to hardly getting a kick in the final this season. Crazy

Hasn’t done enough this season and hasn’t looked great in the majority of games he’s started. Injuries have played a part in that though.

It’s an awkward decision to make over his future because you’d think he be worth a fair bit of money and a lot of people don’t see a role for him in this system. But is this system/manager really worth backing?

Just one of a number of players who doesn’t fit into Amorim’s clown show.

I won’t blame him if he wants to leave.
I think technically he’s our best player.
Criminal the role he now has after his break through season.

Besides injury, he hasn't been good minus a couple flashes. Young player with too much football following the international spell.

Hopefully the next manager moves back to a 3 man midfield so Mainoo can kick on.

When the game is condensed like that in the opposition half, he's one of our more useful assets, being able to accept the ball in tight spaces like he did against Lyon. I know he's had a poor season, but he had to be given more time on the pitch yesterday, particularly, as others have cited, our CM's/AM's were hot garbage.

That i agree with. To people saying he's been treated unfairly, he got given game time prior to last night to show us something as to why he deserved a start in the final and failed.

Saying that when your competition was putting in genuine 2 out of 10 performances he should have got more than garbage minutes he was afforded last night.

His best position in the system currently is a 10 and he lacks some of the physical/movement characteristics currently

The next best position is where Bruno plays and he needs to improve his defensive work and stamina, as well as long passing for that.

He's only 19 so can improve but needs to put in the work

Said it all along since he burst onto the scene when everyone was heaping praise on him. He has the skills and football brain to take the game by the scruff of the neck. But he doesn't cut it. Needs a mental coach!

My prediction is he'll outlive Amorim and be seen as an elite talent again pretty quickly. Not in this system though, he doesn't suit it. Would be sad if we committed all out to it, leading to his sale like it seems we're doing with Garna. He'll have a good career though.

The thing is, not many do suit this system

i dont know, he needs to figure out a better fitness regimen. Right now the dude is already running like he has concrete bags attached to him. Usually that only gets worse as he will get older.

Needs to come on sooner last night. That being said he also needs to improve massively. Lacks the stamina and bite to play in midfield currently. I think he can play in Amorim CM, but that depends on how he improve himself

I think whoever the manager, young player putting in the work to improve is imperative. Imagine Kobbie technique with the stamina to match, easily would be our best midfielder.
My fear is that if we cater too much to him he'll go down the same path Rashford was.

Hasn't justified getting put on this season.
This is the unfortunate truth. We all love Kobbie, I think, and are desperate for some new United youth stars to pin our hopes to.

But its just a sad reality that even when 18 years old he has never looked sufficiently fit to play 90 minutes. And maybe I'm naive but I think thats something he can control. I don't think he could ever transform himself into being fast or premier league level quick, thats just not him apparently and when your baseline is that low theres only so much improvement possible.

But! If he wanted to I think there is nothing stopping him from getting fit.

What a ridiculous statement.
Has he not shown this multiple times?
Vs wolves, Liverpool, City.
It’s the system that’s not in his favour.

Control central midfield = controlling the game.
Having 2 in there is not going to work regularly.
Mainoo needs 2 others beside him unless he miraculously becomes a lot more mobile.
I think he’ll be a high profile casualty of amorims system. And I won’t like that at all.

I know who I'd rather keep if it's a choice between Mainoo and Amorim...

You saying he needs another midfielder next to him because he's just a passenger in midfield?

Of course we wouldn’t be in the final had he not been put on against Lyon. Did Mount justify starting? Did he justify 70 minutes?
You can say the same about mount, and mount has justified himself more than Mainoo.

Can we? He scored two goals after we were 3-1 up on aggregate. Mount has done feck all to justify himself at this club.

He's a CM being asked to play CM. What are we talking about putting his season down to system.

He's just a young lad who massively overachieved last season. CM's his age just don't do what he did last season. What we're seeing this year is more the norm. Just give him some time.

I'm saying he's not the most athletic, at least at the moment. Putting him in a 2 is crazy.
I think a good similarity would be Jorginho of a few years ago. Excellent player and can affect games but isn't suitable for a 2 man central midfield.
Either we change the system and by extension change Amorim, or I think Mainoo will struggle as I don't think he'll be good as a 10.

Edit - I have severe reservations whether 541 can ever work in the PL as it is now. Maybe when 442 was relatively common then 541 is a decent strategy but with most teams playing 433/451 you just don't need 3 CBs to mark one CF and you get overrun in midfield.

Mainoo literally runs away from his position and hides from responsibility. Mount hasn't been good but he's at least been where he should be trying to do his role.

Using hiding from responsibility and then bigging up Mount in the same sentence. That’s something. He’d a grand total of 12 passes on Wednesday night. In 70 minutes. Garnacho had 14 after replacing him.
