Jesus Christ. There has been literally nothing to show that or even make that claim. He had a good 1st season followed by a hugely disappointing 2nd, injuries aside.

I'll see your Jesus Christ and raise you a Holy Mother of God!

We'll see what becomes of Kobbie Mainoo -- for all we know he could be the next Adnan Jansajz -- but what he showed United in his first six months was nothing short of astonishing for an 18 year old. And when called up for the England NT he was brilliant. We all know about last season and we are all free to conclude that Kobbie is nothing special or that maybe he is. But his first season was far more than merely "good" for a 22 year old, but considering that he was only 18 he was outstanding.

But whether he can rise back to and above that level only time will tell, but based on what we've already seen from him before his sophomore slump and injuries there is a very special footballer in the making.

This is the thing, everyone had such a bad season and Kobbie was part of that too.

Its not uncommon to see a player have an amazing breakout season, followed by a lul. Its not up to him and Amorim to get back up to speed.

He seemed like he put on a bit of extra weight last season, not helped with injuries that kept him out for periods regularly.

I think in some games, we will see a Bruno / Kobbie midfield.
That extra weight really slowed him down, and it's not fat but just muscle. It looked like he was running in sand, he does look leaner somewhere between last season and his debut season so hopefully he'll be quicker

Not sure I have ever heard that before. Quite a few calles him slow and questioned his stamina, though.

Big mistake going to the Euro last summer. Need these few months to build his pysique. Hopefully, he can correct it this summer.

A mistake playing in a European Championship final. Joke.

Really grew on that experience this season. Did him great.

Yes, short terms success (or «success» in this case) can come at the expense of long term success. A player like Mainoo, that has a long way to go physically, should make the most of the time from may to august. The club should even consider extending that period. It is hard to build during the season. Look how a few players changes during that covid break. Or look at Tonali when he returned from that suspension.

Nothing to do with the toxic environment, and turmoil at the club then…

To say that it was the wrong decision for a player to go to the Euros, is frankly absurd.

People call all players chubby or say they've put on weight whenever their form is not optimal.

No. The mistake was him going on that stupid Nike PR tour across USA when we had our preseason.

it seems like every news outlets only mentioned 2 more yrs. Unless you can put in different source.
Transfermarkt says he's got a club option for another year. And the Mirror and Sun also both say he's got that additional year but I don't know if they're anymore reliable than Transfermarkt

My bad. You're right then. 2+1 option. So we still have plenty of time.

Going to be a big season for him. Is it crazy to suggest that he’s waiting to see how he fits into the system before committing to a new deal?

My concern that is on paper, he probably doesn’t have the ground coverage that Amorim really likes his CM’s to have in the system. I do feel he’s that talented however, any top level manager could make adjustments for him and get him in the team. The best youngster to come through since Greenwood by a distance.

This is also a touch hyperbolic.

Username checks out. Sorry, but I had to...and I really don't mean that.

As for alleged hyperbole, I'd like to know how it was possible then for Kobbie Mainoo, who by that time only had maybe five months of PL experience under his belt, was called up not only to be a member of the England NT squad, but started for England at the Euros and acquitted himself -- to use classic British understatement -- well.

I can cite stats and sources for you if absolutely necessary, but Mainoo was widely praised for his performances for England during the Euros. Maybe I'll just cite one source: https://www.skysports.com/football/...obbie-mainoo-shines-again-against-netherlands and then extract the key takeaway here:

Kobbie Mainoo - 8

Mainoo's performance was the kind that makes you wonder why it took until midway through England's third game in Germany for Southgate to pair him alongside Declan Rice. The 19-year-old's excellent run almost produced an assist for Phil Foden, while his defensive work was stronger than at any point during this tournament.

This assessment is not an outlier.

And it's not as though Kobbie had to pull PR strings to get into the England NT. He was outstanding for United before he was called up Southgate, arguably for United than he was for England, for whom he was outstanding.

I may have my facts wrong about this, but Kobbie didn't just string passes together against bottom-feeding clubs. He was, again, outstanding for United in the FA Cup final against City...in which he scored a brilliant goal. True, Bruno's assistant was from the top shelf but the composure the then-18 year old Kobbie Mainoo showed against City was ridiculous. He's a midfielder, not a striker, but he took the shot with the composure of prime Rooney. He made it look easy, like he could have converted on the shot with his eyes closed, but how many times have we seen our forwards -- Hojlund and Zirkzee as well as Rashford, Sancho and Antony --
botch that shot?

But Kobbie's performances last season are historical fact and if you prefer to cling to that, so be it. We shall see whether Kobbie ever returns to his first season for or whether he becomes the next Adnan.

Sopranos reference.

It strikes that isn't at all clear right now which position in midfield he truly excels and obviously that will be a significant challenge going forward.

It happens that I only watched one episode of The Sopranos and here's why, taking care not to be overly graphic on a public forum -- Tony was sitting on a toilet releasing a biosolid while receiving sexual gratification from a young female. I can take a lot of gore -- Spartacus was no problem for me as well as the bowling alley scene in There Will be Blood -- but that scene in The Sopranos was depraved beyond belief.

We're all puzzled as to where Kobbie fits in under Amorim. Ruben has forgotten more about football tactics in the last five minutes than I will ever know but it seems to me that we should have sold Bruno and use Kobbie for the attacking midfeld role in the 343. Mount, whom we should never have bought but he's in the squad now, could have rotated with Kobbie if the responsibility proved to be too much to bear at this early stage of in the career of the 20 year old on a weekly basis. I do worry about how Kobbie will get the minutes he needs to continue his development, but that's the kind of problem we need more of, not the problem of how to get rid of overpaid sloths who can't be bothered to lift a toe if they don't have the ball at their feet.

If you were him you'd wait as well surely, he's in the driving seat and I don't think he suits this formation (if he has to be anywhere, he's a 10) so he'll see if Amorim does well or not, then make a decision. I think Chelsea will be all over him if he does become available.
