I'd be a little wary of our fans hyping Mainoo up again. The lad obviously has talent but at the same time what we're seeing is a classic example of a vexed player proving the previous Manager wrong. But that's only going to be a short term boost, if he continues this form through the remainder of the season then he'll have proved his point.

The talk of him going to the World Cup is madness. It's been four games. Give the lad some space to breathe.
He went from being a starter for club and country to being not liked at all by this manager and now is back to being a starter for club, not a stretch to say he should be called up to the squad for country.

He started for England in the Euro 2024 final?

It's really not - he's being talked about just going to the World Cup, not starting. He's competing with the likes of Curtis Jones, Jordan Henderson and Wharton for a back up role.

There's no indication that he would be starting ahead of Rice or Anderson.

Mainoo was playing well in his cameos under Amorim this season. I've posted @statpadders post about it a few times where he went through the games. It's just the agenda Amorim was building against Mainoo was blinding a lot of our fanbase. They wanted to justify selling him for an underperforming manager so refused to give credit where due.

He was also one of our better players at the Euros just gone. He 100% deserves to be in the conversation at least.

I think his passing looks sharper, and he’s beginning to show a wider range, attempting passes we hadn’t seen from him before.

Also, would you trust any other player more than him in this position?

England would be mad not to have Mainoo in the squad tbh if he keeps up this form. Offers a lot and didn’t look out of place internationally in the Euros.

Didn’t look out of place is an understatement - he was class and solidified a starting spot!

He’s a top player and easily should start for England. Feel for the lad he had to endure 14 months without football due to a fraud manager.

Yes it's very pleasing to see him adding that to his game, was badly needed and odd that he'd never managed to show it more previously. I suppose it might have been partly a confidence/comfort thing as well as him putting in some hours on the training ground on it in the meantime. Any stamina / pace issues he may or may not have will be vastly less important if he can switch play quickly as the ball will always be able to move faster than any opposition player.

Here’s where the revisionist by United fans no less is at its worst. When he came on at halftime in the group stage match (against Slovenia iirc) they had someone man marking him for the first 15 minutes of the second half. He’s what allowed the midfield and front 4 to connect with fluidity and changed the tournament for England.

Can’t understand Kobie haters. He’s an insane talent for his age. What I love the most is he’s just so comfortable with players around him. I think he’s the most press resistant player we’ve had for years. Maybe since Scholes. He’s just never rushed and has the picture before the play. The assist to Bryan was awesome.

I’m not a fan of international football so I’m yet to watch Tuchel’s England side…But does Thomas play with a CM pairing of Rice/Anderson with 3 attackers and 1 CF ahead of them.

Would be hard to see Mainoo getting a spot in the midfield 2 if that was the case.

But he could sneak into the squad if he keeps making headlines in the pitch.

I think he's doing really well and I have every hope he'll become a great player. That being said, he still needs to improve his incisiveness and, needs to put more pace on his passes. Sometimes his passes reach players were they are, rather than the space they're moving into, causing them to check back, which can slow down the tempo just a tad. I'm sure carrick will coach that out of him in no time. Love the relationship between them.

What formation does england play right now. I feel like even if Mainoo is part of the WC squad he will not really gain much playtime ahead of Rice, Wharton, Anderson and Bellingham

All these non-United fans keep saying matter of factly what's been intensely argued by our fans

It's a 4231, Mainoo would just backup Anderson. Wharton vs Mainoo is a discussion but no reason both can't be called up to the squad. Not like they have obvious choices beyond them.

Bellingham is a 10, not a CM.

Rice and Bellingham will take up 2 spots in midfield which leaves just one more for Anderson, Wharton and possibly Mainoo.

I can see Mainoo getting minutes in a game of lesser importance or when England are comfortably ahead.

Bellingham wont start I wouldn’t have thought. Rice and Anderson will play as the CMs, with Rogers as the 10. Bellingham competing with Rogers and Mainoo/Wharton as the back up 6 and 8.

It's Rogers vs Bellingham for the 10. The deep 2 is Rice and Anderson. Wharton and Mainoo fill the squad, they won't start, that's pretty clear.

A couple of big "if's", but if Nottingham Forest get increasingly worse as the season goes on, where Anderson is part of a squad that finishes 18th, and if Mainoo continues in this current form as United secure Champions League football, then I think we could see Mainoo starting alongside Rice at the World Cup.

He has been crucial for ball progression for us in the last couple of games. Sure, his long passing leaves something to be desired, but his short passing has been good and how he can just bypass whole midfields with the ball at his feet is pretty unique. A great asset to have in the team, and complements Casemiro well.

I assume they will prioritize the players that got England through to the WC. Mainoo just getting into the squad at all will be a big deal after not playing at all in qualifying.

You say this like he doesn't have a previous history of being good and also starting for England in a final.

DISBELIEF is the right word for how Amorim criminally banished Mainoo from any meaningful minutes with the first team.

Similar situation to how he broke into the starting 11 in the Euros. The kid is that talented that he can displace a midfielder who was a mainstay in the qualification stages.

Another big game for the kid tonight. Only as good as your last game and he has to run the show again. Come on Kobbie!

I think you’re being harsh on the attackers who had no space. I’d say overall it was a poor performance from the whole team who looked clueless in the final third.

We did have some good play getting out from the back.

Also he left his man for the goal, even though I thought Martinez should have gone out to stop the cross.

Yeah I thought they were both alright. Mainoo had caught up with Soucek but switched off and let him go for the goal though. A series of errors involved but he has to be tighter, even if he scored, he needed to be in a position to at least put him off.

Case did but Mainoo? He was fine, but really just played a lot of five yard passes sideways and backwards. Not a poor performance but not a good one either.

Apart from that one cross for the offside goal, what did he do, I think that was his second forward pass all game

I thought he was poor. Didn’t do enough when he had the ball, and takes too many touches slowing it down.

Early in the game it looked like West Ham players were swarming him the moment he got the ball and he struggled to cope.
