One of those performances that make you think he's not going to figure it out

Ugarte deserves a game with Casemiro

I agree, Mainoo struggles defensively and his passing stats are padded by backwards and sideways passing, when he is passing forward it’s the absolute safest pass and offers no break down of defenses. Other than his shot against Newcastle, I don’t remember him contributing much in attack since the Arsenal game, and even that game I can’t recall him doing much going forward.

To be fair he was a hair from having a couple of assists for Casemiro and Mbeumo recently.

Would Cunha be any worse than Mainoo in that position? And you could play Amad, Mbuemo and Sesko up front. Don't see Mainoo providing much defensively, could actually see Cunha doing more. Cunha is cut out to play centrally for me, he's not a left winger

He has no defensive positioning and his passing is significantly worse.

I wouldn't mind seeing Bruno back in beside Casemiro and give Amad a go at number 10. Hopefully we can try a few things out come the end of the season.

He should be sold while his price is still up. I actually dont think anybody woul dbe willing to pay more than 30m for him to be honest. He's not even that good for PL itself. Slow as piss, zero stamina, no goal threat, really subpar longrange passing. Good first touch here means he's absolutely overrated. Tbh, he's just one of those hyped players from England. Got a really big help by Southgate to expose him to international football where he could get his 6-7/10 performance agianst the likes of Gibraltar, and made himself a victim of Amorim this year, while underperforming for year and a half almost prior to that.

He shouldnt be treated as a darling, he achieved nothing and we could really count his great games one hand. And many games he was just about cruising around and been actually quite poor.

BTW today is a prime example of a player who will never be able to impose on the game. 10-men newcastle and he couldnt cross the half way line. Just a ridiculous player who does nothing.
I disagree, I think he can be that third midfielder. If we’re in all competitions we need more than a starting two in behind Bruno. We need to rotate players. Ugarte should be sold, Casemiro is going.

People forget he is only 20, I think for his age he is pretty decent. His control, first touch, dribbling in tight spaces is above average. If he adds passing and an end product we have a very good player on our hands potentially. I think another season or two and you will have a better idea of if he can make it here.

The issue is whether he is happy to not start week in week out in the prem.

Astonishing criticism. Mentioned this in another thread but as his game changes, and he sits back more in midfield, the criticism was inevitable. Unless you're scoring or - at the very least - getting an assist then your contributions will be literally invisible for 30-40% of the fan base. He didn't have a great game against Newcastle. But if people are honest the criticism stems primarily from the fact he's no longer as much of a goal threat as he was because of how he's being utilised and where he's settling down into the team. The patience we have for home grown players who can look crap for the best part of 3 years but we're convinced they're worth sticking with because a month of Sundays ago they got a 'Goal involvement' - yet Mainoo has a poor match and suddenly some are questioning his future.

The moment he stepped deeper into midfield then nothing he did could aleviate the criticism other than scoring because some fans literally do not notice anything else.
Did he score? No
Did he get an assist? No

...maybe we need to sell?

Seeing him mature and introduce restraint and discipline into his game, seeing him sit back and read the game more will do wonders for his development that we will benefit from in the future. But try and make a sharable TikTok video out of that.

The criticism isn't about goals or assists, it's more did he run? Heck even Casemiro's goal contributions off sets anything we would require Mainoo to do for output.

He is a serial jogger and players with zero intensity. We are playing with an invisible midfield at time with him and no desire to track back.

Be interesting to see if he gets dropped for Ugarte or has Wilcox given Carrick his orders? Because I thought Ugarte looked far more lively against Newcastle than Mainoo has, and I think many coaches would be considering that change right now to try to spark some life back into us.

Ugarte has zero end product and is scatty in his style of play. At least Kobe can keep possession in tight spaces. I trust him way more. Im not saying he's the answer and would also support him playing a squad role next season in 4 competitions but Ugarte is not the answer. He needs to go in the summer.

I don’t really rate Ugarte either, but he brings things to that table that Mainoo seemingly can’t. Like energy, intensity, steel. Casemiro is actually our best midfielder on the ball, so put somebody with a bit of steel next to him instead. Mainoo has been poor recently and I expect Villa may come and make it a scrap in midfield, so I’d actually be costing Ugarte here. There’s a chance Villa run through our midfield like a wet paper towel if there’s not a considerable improvement. Obviously this depends on which Villa turn up.

For what it’s worth, what end product does Mainoo have exactly? He's a luxury player that brings very little to the table most of the time.

End product insofar as when we're in tight positions and getting pressed he is actually able to squeeze the ball to a player in space still, I don't really see that in Ugarte. Mainoo doesn't get the assists or goals but he does allow us recycle possession in important places. But i agree he has no dynamism in his play. I actually would think he would help us counter against Villa's attacks. With Ugarte i'd expect him to give the ball away alot and generally just be wasteful.

Villa doesn't really press though. Mostly mid-block. Not sure if that favors Mainoo or Ugarte though.

On the one hand, no pressing means Ugarte is not a high turnover risk. On the other, we'll be playing more in Villa's third than usual (I hope), and you'd rather have Mainoo there.

Mainoo isn’t good defensively and causes Case to have to cover more ground. I don’t rate Ugarte but I prefer keeping Case on for 10 more minutes a game than hoping Mainoo can play like his first 2 games under Carrick.

Man Utd 3:1 Aston Villa New
Quiet at first but I thought he really grew into the game.

Liked his decision making at the end of the game there. Slowed it down and kept us in possession rather than joining the gung-ho gang.

He's really improved physically. He can now hold his own in really physical duels and still has enough energy to keep going deep into stoppage time.

He makes us tick, he’s getting better, he’s started doing more long range passes, keeps everything simple, and still a young player.

Also, our form since he came back can’t be ignored. He must have something to do with that surely.

I thought he was poor. Lost most 50/50s, played with no intensity. Safe on the ball but even that wasn't plain sailing. He did grow into the game and I'm not going to lay into anyone after a 3-1 win but for me in the last few games he's usually been amongst the worst performers and playing at a languid pace

Maybe, more than likely us getting rid of Amorim is true reason are form has improved so much.

Thought today he was alright decent on the ball, tried a few long range passes that didn't come off but was still a bit slow in transition for my liking. There where a few times and that's probably because Villa where shite, they still managed to get the ball straight through are midfield with ease.

He makes us tick better than Ugarte for sure and playing him there allows us to play Bruno in his best position. I do think if we buy 1 or 2 good midfielders he will have a tough battle to start games. He has also slowed down on progressing our play through dribbling through the midfield which was his main strength. So he gives us a decent platform along with Casemiro, but we need to level that area up. I also disagree on the long passing, he doesn't really seem to have it in his locker. I do think if we do upgrade him he will be a good squad player for us though.

agreed mostly i think its a 6/10 performance

Thought he was really poor and has been getting carried by Casemiro as of late.

We don’t have the greatest midfielders currently and I’m not all in on the Mainoo train by any stretch but it’s working generally speaking by hook or by crook.

Personally think Mainoo needs to improve significantly to stay in the first team next season, needs to improve his forward passes and line breaking/late runs into the box. I think he’s improved defensively since he’s come back into the team.

You have 5 players next to him who treat the ball like a hot potato. You absolutely need someone just like him. I would imagine he's doing exactly what Carrick is asking if him. 20 years old. He'll be around a long time. Get used to it.

Solid game without doing anything spectacular but so so good for 20.

I have been a critic, but i thought he did well. Doing things simple is great. He is only 20.

My concern is how good is he without Casemiro

Think he hides and when he does receive the ball he usually plays the easiest pass as quickly as he can.

Did alright, better than Villa's midfield and currently playing bettet than at least one midfielder being quoted at 100m.

Yeah I've been seeing this for a while, he'll offload the ball to a teammate and then put himself behind an opposition player so there's no route to play the ball back to him. Was a passenger again today.
